Wittman was informed of the decision by team president Ernie Grunfeld minutes after the Wizards beat the Atlanta Hawks Wednesday night, 109-98, to end their 2015-16 season with a 41-41 record.

Wittman took over the Wizards for the late Flip Saunders, who was fired after a 2-15 start to the 2011-12 season. After being elevated from assistant to head coach, Wittman guided the Wizards to an 18-31 record for the remainder of the season, enough to be brought back the following year.

The Wizards steadily improved over the next three seasons, building a young core along the way that, along with their 2010 first-round pick, John Wall, included first-rounders Bradley Beal (2012), Otto Porter (2013) and Kelly Oubre, Jr. (2015).

After missing the playoffs for five straight years, the Wizards finally reached the postseason in 2013-14, Wittman’s second full season coaching the team. They would reach the Eastern Conference semifinals in consecutive years, being eliminated by the Indiana Pacers in 2014, and the Atlanta Hawks in 2015.

The Wizards were eliminated from playoff contention with a 112-99 loss to the Detroit Pistons last Friday, their first step backward under Wittman. Wittman’s record with the Wizards was 178-199 (.472).
