High School basketball.......This is Indiana

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone, I will be attending the Evansville Reitz @ Southport game on Feb 21st. Pretty fired up, being a local Evansville resident. I have seen Reitz play 3 times this year and they are a great team. 19-0 #1 overall ranking and I believe they are ranked top #25 nationally. Not a lot of size. Starting big man is 6'5", but they have 4 guys that take the ball up the court and they press the entire 32 min. This will also be my first look at Paul Scruggs. Should be a great matchup and could even be a Semi-state or State championship preview.

Anyone else know of any must see matchups coming up soon before the IHSAA tournament starts?

Can someone give me the rundown on Reitz and any solid players to watch for?

3 Tamaje' Blackwell G So. 6-0 165   4 Keaton Ahrens F Jr. 6-2 170   5 Elijah Dunham G So. 6-1 195   11 Blake Ruckman G Jr. 5-11 180   12 Dru Smith G Jr. 6-2 175   13 Jaelan Sanford G Sr. 6-3 175   20 Alex Stein G Sr. 6-3 180   21 Jarod McHugh G Jr. 6-2 165   22 Jacob Norman F Sr. 6-5 200   23 Mario Barnes G Sr. 6-0 160   32 Nate Hansen F Sr. 6-3 190   41 Austin Elmore C Sr. 6-7 185   53 Addison Volkman C So. 6-3 190

Starters are Hansen, Sanford, Norman, Smith, & Stein. Barnes and Ruckman see quite a few min off bench. Stein and Norman are both signed to play for USI (University of Southern Indiana) and I personally believe they will both be very good at this level. They would both have made good D-1 players but they are just a bit undersized. Stein is a 2 or 3 that drives the ball alot. Norman is only 6'5" but jumps out of the gym (think Luke Recker). Sanford is signed to play for Toledo. He has a great all around game. Probably would be their go to guy on this team if they were ever down 1 pt and needed a bucket. Hansen could be the best player on the team, but he has yet to qualify academically so the only offer he has is Olney Central in IL. Mario is a defensive specialist he plays the top of the 1-3-1 press and half court zone when he is in. He has to be in top 10 in state in steals and he is not even a starter. Dru Smith is a great athlete, not a great shooter, but Toledo has already offered I believe when they came to watch Sanford fell in love with Smith as well. If he improves his shot in off season he will get some more mid-major offers. Great team to get out and watch if anyone is anywhere close to where they play.

Stein for Reitz is the coach's son of the USI Women's basketball team. I don't know if he still does it, but he would flop when anyone got close to him and whine to the refs that he was fouled. I would hope someone has told him to stop that or at least actually get contact before doing it.

Reitz has a good group of players. They often lost to Harrison when it mattered, but they have really surprised me with the way they are beating people. I have not seen them this year, but they haven't been in a close game for a long time. I expected them to be good, but not this good. A friend of mine was the parent of the Happe kid and I remember the parents wanting to run Adams out of town a few years back. I expect to check out the Sectional final game if it is a Harrison/Reitz final. Reitz will walk easily into the Semi-State.

I remember Harrison and Bosse being the best two teams in town when Harrison had Ernie Duncan and Bosse had Jaquan Lyle. I think this Reitz team is a product of all 7 kids that play having played together in the same system since 6th grade. None of them have transferred and they all play on the same AAU team so they have spent a lot of time together. I have heard mixed reviews on Adams. Heard he was a good coach, but also heard if you take this teams 4 years away he has a record right around .500. Harrison is good this year, but young. I believe Central is the 2nd best team in the city this year and Reitz has beat them by 14 and 34 already. I think 14 is the closest game they have had this year. That is why the Southport game interests me so much. A Top 5 ranked team on the road. Can't wait to see how they matchup. Also super excited to see Scruggs play.

As Uwe Robb said, Central is the 2nd best team in Evansville and this last Saturday Reitz won 117-74. All 5 starters scored at least 14. Sanford is their go to, but the ball doesn't stick in anyone's hands. Their press is the best I've seen at this level bc of their length and athleticism at every position. The only thing that worries me for Reitz in this game is the fact that they haven't been in a close one and haven't played a team the caliber of Southport, where as Southport plays a schedule full of good teams in Indy.

I'd love to see this Southport Reitz game. I have seen Southport, but not Reitz. Southport has Scruggs obviously, but they also have a short, FAST point guard that I could see giving a press problems, but like I said I have no clue about Reitz.

I love watching Indiana High School basketball.  The level of competition across the state is awesome.  There should be some great games around tournament time.

My Norwell Knights play Caleb Swanigan on the 12th.  We will probably get destroyed but it will be fun to watch him in action.

I'll sit there and cry knowing that he will probably be a Sparty.

Reitz is the best high school basketball 'team' I've ever seen. They make the extra pass and then the extra pass after that. They are so much more athletic than you would ever think. They play with such a purpose and calmness it's like nothing I've seen at the high school level. And, chances are Norman will catch one off the back board and you will be like, oh no he din't!
