WR Caleb Cornett arrested, charges dismissed

Recommended Posts

Redshirt sophomore wide receiver Caleb Cornett was arrested early Wednesday morning and charged with battery and disorderly conduct after his involvement in a scuffle on Kirkwood Avenue in downtown Bloomington. Lt. Craig Munroe of the IU Police Department confirmed the arrest.

"We had a few officers in the area that saw some commotion," Munroe said, recounting the incident report. "As they approached the crowd, they observed Mr. Cornett strike somebody in the face. The individual that he hit was knocked unconscious for several minutes."

The incident occurred shortly after 3 a.m. Wednesday, just west of the intersection of Kirkwood and Dunn Street, a well-trafficked night-time location in Bloomington.

Cornett, a Ben Davis graduate, appeared in 11 games last season as a redshirt freshman. With three wide receivers gone from last year's roster, he had been expected to compete for significant playing time this fall.

The other individual involved in the incident was transported to Bloomington Hospital, according to Munroe.

Cornett was also arrested last December for reckless driving and OWI, according to court records.

He pled guilty to the reckless driving charge in June, according to court records. He was sentenced to 55 hours of community service and 180 days in jail, 178 of which were suspended. His driver's license was also suspended for six months, and he was placed on probation for one year.

A jail official confirmed that Cornett was still at the Monroe County Jail as of 11:15 a.m. Thursday. He is being held on $10,000 surety, $500 cash bond. However, the previous conviction for reckless driving triggered a probation hold, which means Cornett cannot be bailed out at this time, according to the official.

According to the Indiana Legal Code, a level 5 felony carries a penalty of between one and six years in prison, and a fine of no more than $10,000.
