BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana Softball has announced two new staff roles for program alums as Amanda Wagner (2010-13) has been named volunteer assistant coach and Michelle Huber (2013-16) is serving as graduate assistant.

Wagner has been with the coaching staff the last three seasons as both a student and graduate assistant.

"Amanda is now going into her eighth season with the program as both a player and graduate assistant," said head coach Michelle Gardner. "She obviously is a tremendous addition as a volunteer assistant with a vast knowledge of the game and a true passion for IU Softball."

Wagner joined the Indiana coaching staff after an illustrious playing career that saw her three times be named Second Team All-Big Ten. In her senior season, she hit .423, good for third-best in a single year in program history, on her way to NFCA Second Team All-Region accolades. In addition, Wagner sits fifth all-time at IU in career RBI with 101.

"Eight years ago, I committed to Indiana and truly believed in Coach Gardner's vision for this program," said Wagner. "I was fortunate enough to have worn the Indiana jersey and obtain two degrees, but my experience as a student-athlete and graduate assistant have truly shaped me into the person I am today. I am very excited to step into this new role as a volunteer assistant and help continue to grow the program."

Huber, who concluded her Indiana playing career in May, was a three-time Academic All-Big Ten selection and twice earned Big Ten Player of the Week accolades. She finished the 2016 campaign second on the team in home runs, including a stretch of four homers in the last six games of the season. Additionally, the Carmel, Ind. native set career highs in RBI (24), runs (23) and walks (15).

"After just finishing up her playing career, Michelle truly knows what it means to be an IU Softball player," said Gardner. "She will be a tremendous asset to us as she assists in day-to-day operations of the program."

During her time as a graduate assistant, Huber will pursue her Masters degree in Sport Marketing.

"I am very excited to continue my education while being a part of the IU Softball team as a graduate assistant," said Huber. "I look forward to helping the team in any way I can.  I am extremely grateful for this opportunity and can't wait for the season to get started."

Hoosiers rally for 3 in the 6th & 7th and beat Butler 6-2!

Miami (OH) up next.

For a good portion of the game Butler was up 2-0 until about the 6th inning and IU just kept getting timely hits. To me I did not think they looked that impressive.

Looks like we picked up a good one earlier this week.

The Indiana Hoosiers liked Kc Clapper's bat and demeanor as a backstop. Clapper was enamored by everything about the IU campus, especially the softball program.

The Frontier sophomore saw no reason to delay making a decision about her future. Clapper accepted a scholarship offer from the Indiana coaching staff, giving her verbal commitment that she will join the Hoosiers in the fall of 2019. "I've wanted to play college softball ever since I started travel," said Clapper, who is a member of the Illinois Chill 16U travel softball program.

As a freshman for Frontier, Clapper helped the Falcons make their first state finals appearance. She had no trouble adjusting to her role as the starting catcher and a reliable offensive weapon in her rookie year.

Clapper hit .451 with five home runs, 16 doubles, 38 runs batted in and 19 runs scored in earning her team's co-MVP honor in her first season of high school ball. "That was probably the most fun I've ever had," she said.

Instead, she’s achieving one of her lifelong goals earlier than she first expected. Goodin is trading her red and gold Wildcats uniform for Indiana University's crimson and cream by playing for the Hoosiers this spring.  Full article at:

Mater Dei grad Emily Goodin earns win in IU debut - Evansville Courier & Press

Emily Goodin picked up where she left off.

Goodin, a freshman pitcher at Indiana University, struck out the first batter she faced in her college debut on her way to her first career win Friday. It was Goodin's first time pitching for her school since clinching a state championship with a game-winning strikeout as a junior at Mater Dei last spring.

A two-time Courier & Press All-Metro Player of the Year, she graduated in December to early-enroll at Indiana and join the softball team. Two games into the season, she's already making an impact.

Indiana defeated Seattle 7-3 in the Kajikawa Classic in Tempe, Arizona, Friday. Goodin pitched 5 1/3 innings in relief, during which she struck out three, walked none and allowed just one run. She retired the first seven batters she faced.

The Hoosiers (1-1) play No. 18 Utah and Arizona State on Saturday.

TEMPE, Ariz. – Behind strong outings in the pitching circle, Indiana Softball opened the 2017 season by splitting day one of the Kajikawa Classic, falling to No. 24 Fresno State, 2-0, before defeating Seattle, 7-3.

In the first game of the day against the Bulldogs, sophomore pitcher Tara Trainer tied her career high with 13 strikeouts, pitching a complete game and surrendering just three hits.

Fresno State pitcher Kamalani Dung also went the distance in the game, fanning seven while allowing three hits.

The pitchers held control for most of the game, with just one combined hit from both teams through three frames.

Fresno State broke the stalemate in the fourth, plating the only two runs of the contest on a pair of RBI hits. Maddi Hackbarth knocked a two-out double to left field and advanced into scoring position on a wild pitch. Brooke Coates, sent into run for Hackbarth, scored the first run of the day on a double off the bat of Vanessa Hernandez.  Hernandez crossed the plate one batter later on a single through the left side by Savannah McHellon.

The Hoosiers looked to answer in the bottom half of the frame as senior Erin Lehman sent a two-double to shallow right. However, she was left stranded.

Fresno State's Dung wouldn't let the Hoosiers into scoring position again as she earned her first win of the year.

Friday's second game saw freshman pitcher Emily Goodin make her debut, pitching 5.1 impressive innings in relief to earn her first career victory.

The Redhawks got on the board in the first as Madison Cathcart sent a two-out RBI single up the middle to score Paige Bouska. Seattle would add onto its lead in the following inning as an Indiana fielding error allowed Jessica Flanagan to cross the plate.

Goodin then entered the game, earning her first career strikeout against the first batter she faced to send the game to the third frame with a 2-0 Seattle advantage. The righty from Evansville, Ind. would go on to retire the first seven batters she faced.

Indiana would quickly answer with a two-out rally in the third inning. After freshman Katie Lacefield earned her first career hit, Lehman and CaraMia Tsirigos drew back-to-back walks to load the bags for Taylor Uden, who doubled to left center to tie the game up.

The score would remain tied at 2-2 until the Hoosiers broke the game open in the fifth inning, plating five runs to jump to a 7-2 lead. A Lehman single and walks to Tsirigos and Uden loaded the bases for senior Kayla Mathewson, who brought in Lehman on a sacrifice fly to left field. Sophomore Rachel O'Malley then sent a ball up the middle to plate freshman Sydney Hester, who was running for Tsirigos. Junior transfer Shayna Gamm then singled to left center, scoring O'Malley and Uden. The Hoosier rally was capped off by an RBI double by junior Rebecca Blitz to plate Gamm.

Seattle would get one run back on a solo homer from Savannah Loomis, but would get no closer.

Indiana returns to action in the Kajikawa Classic by facing No. 18 Utah and Arizona State at Farrington Stadium on Saturday.
