Our hopes of salvaging at least one game of the series are slowly evaporating.  Through 3 innings Badgers leading 3-0.    Goodin started and pitched 2  2/3 innings giving up 2 runs, 4 hits, 6K, 2BB.  Trainer relieved in the bottom of the third with 2 outs and Badger runners on first and second and walked the first batter she faced to load'em up.  She also walked the next batter forcing in a run and it's now a 3-0 Wisconsin lead but a ground out ends the Wisconsin threat.

Josie Wood relieved Trainer in the 4th inning which was scoreless for both teams.   In the bottom of the 5th, Wisconsin loads the bases with one out and an error by Lacefield allows a run to score and it's 4-0; bases still loaded.   And it goes from worse to worser as an infield single makes it 5-0 then Wood walks in a run and it's 6-0 and the bases are still loaded with one out.  And Wood walks (her 5th of the game) in another run and it's 7-0.  Oh good grief!  Wood walks (#6) in yet another run and it's 8-0 and that's the final score as we lose all 3 games to the Badgers.

I know softball pitching isn't anything like pitching in baseball, but Wood threw 76 pitches in less than 2 full innings.

Putting it up a day early since it's Senior Weekend.   Friday game set to start at 6:00; Saturday at 2:00 and Sunday at 1:00.

Live Stats

Indiana Softball (31-18, 6-11 Big Ten) returns to Andy Mohr Field for the final regular season homestand of the season as the Hoosiers play host to Rutgers (24-20, 8-9 Big Ten). First pitch of the series is scheduled for Friday at 6 p.m. and admission is free.

Friday's game will be broadcast live on Big Ten Network with Mike Monaco and Sammy Nettling on the call.  Saturday and Sunday's contest will be streamed on BTN Plus. In addition, live stats will be available on IUHoosiers.com.

SENIOR WEEKEND
Prior to Saturday's game, the Hoosiers will pay tribute to its senior class - Jessica Conenna, Sarah Galovich and Tara Trainer. Here's a look at the careers of those seniors:
- Jessica Conenna: The Addison, Ill. native transferred to Indiana following her freshman year at NIU. Conenna made her first career start on Feb. 11, 2017 against No. 18 Utah. Made eight appearances in her sophomore season and has been an invaluable member of the Hoosier pitching staff.
- Sarah Galovich: the IU second baseman and Fort Wayne, Ind. native has played in 178 games in her Hoosier career, making 131 starts. Galovich has collected 68 hits in her career - including five homers - and scored 55 runs while tallying 36 RBI. One of the biggest moments of her career came in last season's Big Ten Tournament Quarterfinals as she knocked a solo home run to tie the game up against Illinois, setting things up for an eventual IU win.
- Tara Trainer: One of the best to ever don the Cream and Crimson, Trainer ranks second in IU history in strikeouts (772) and appearances (162). She's registered a career 2.70 ERA, including a 1.88 mark this season. Her 64 career victories is fourth all-time at IU and her 22 wins this season is the seventh most in program history. The Lebanon, Ohio native is a two-time All-Big Ten and NFCA All-Region pick and became the first Hoosier since 2011 to be drafted by the NPF when she was picked by the Aussie Peppers last week.

SCOUTING RUTGERS
Under first year head coach Kristen Butler, the Scarlet Knights are 24-20 on the year with an 8-9 Big Ten mark. In addition, they are winners of seven of the last eight games and coming off a doubleheader sweep of Maryland on Tuesday.  Rutgers has also taken series from Penn State and Iowa, while dropping series against Northwestern, Michigan and Ohio State. The Scarlet Knights are batting .250 as a team, led by Jess Hughes (.356, 48 hits, 39 runs, 20 stolen bases) and Anyssa Iliopoulos (.325, 39 hits, 30 RBI). In addition, Katie Wingert carries a big bat as her 15 home runs is tied for the most in the Big Ten. In the circle, Rutgers carries a 3.62 team ERA with Corah Price (2.85 ERA, 13-7, 142.2 IP) and Whitney Jones (4.20 ERA, 10-12, 115.2 IP) taking most of the innings.

The Scarlet Knights lead the all-time series against IU, 10-8, with six of those contests coming before Rutgers joined the Big Ten. Last season, Rutgers took the first two games of the series before IU won the finale. Taylor Lambert led IU in the series in 2018, batting .500 in Piscataway.

LAST TIME OUT
Indiana dropped a three-game set to Wisconsin on the road last weekend.

HOOSIERS SET PROGRAM STOLEN BASE RECORD
•Over the weekend, the Hoosiers set a new single-season program record for stolen bases, besting the previous high of 120 set in 1987. IU now stands at 128 stolen bags on the year.

• Indiana has nearly double the stolen bases of any other Big Ten team as Nebraska is the next closest with 68.

• Nationally, Indiana ranks fourth in total stolen bases and fourth in stolen bases per game average (2.61).

• Junior Gabbi Jenkins leads Indiana on the basepaths with 21 stolen bases. For her career, she has 60 stolen bases which is sixth most in program history. Sophomore Taylor Lambert is right on her heels with 20 stolen bases.

TARA TRAINER IN THE RECORD BOOKS
• Trainer ranks second in Indiana history in career strikeouts (772) and appearances (162).

• She is fourth in both victories (64) and innings pitched (708.1). Additionally, Trainer ranks third in games started (123).

• This season, Trainer's 200 strikeouts is the 10th most in a single season at IU. She has posted at least 171 strikeouts in every single year of her career.

NEWS AND NOTES
• Friday's BTN game is the fifth time this season the Hoosiers have played on national TV.

• For the first time since the 2012 season, the Hoosiers have reached 30 wins on the year. At 31-18, IU has the best record since the 2011 campaign (37-18).

• The Hoosiers came in at No. 44 in this week's NCAA RPI. The Scarlet Knights sit at No. 83.

• Indiana has faced or will face 13 opponents who are in the Top 100 of the RPI, for a grand total of 25 games. In addition, IU has eight opponents in the Top 50 with 14 total games coming against them, most notably a March 1 victory versus No. 7 LSU.

• As a staff, the IU pitching battery has tallied 369 strikeouts this year, sixth-most in Indiana program history. Trainer has 200 of those Ks, while junior Emily Goodin has a career-high 113 punchouts.

• A key to Indiana's success this season has been scoring first as the Hoosiers are 26-4 on the season when landing on the scoreboard first.

• Sophomore Maddie Westmoreland has batted her way to a team-best .324 average at the plate and has picked up at least one hit in 14 of the last 18 games. During that stretch, which dates back to the start of the Ohio State series on March 22, she is batting .420 with 21 hits, 11 RBI, 5 doubles, 4 home runs and 8 runs.

•Jenkins had a productive weekend at the plate in Madison, collecting three hits against the Badgers. With a .306 average, she is on pace for her third straight year hitting .300 or better for the Hoosiers.

WHAT'S AHEAD IN 2019
Indiana will conclude the regular season next weekend with a trip to State College, Pa. to face Penn State. IU will then return home to host the 2019 Big Ten Softball Tournament.

So we went 17-6 in the conference last year and have been terrible this season. What happened?

Very good question.  I post a lot of the softball game summaries but primarily because I enjoy doing it.  I'm not close to the program and have no inside info, but over the course of this season, my perception is that our pitching let us down.   Both Trainer and Goodin seemed prone to giving up early runs and we were forced to play from behind.  Can't back it up with facts, just an impression I have FWIW.  Olivia is a much more knowledgeable softball poster and I hope she'll give us her critique of this season.  So Olivia, if you're out there, please let us hear from you.

Maybe a better answer to Gradman's question.  Last year, we struggled in the non-con and then turned it on in B1G.  This year just the opposite.  We played the early season really well; started out 0-3 in B1G and never really recovered.   All the numbers below are strictly for conference play in 2018 and season-to-date in 2019.  Our conference hitting isn't nearly as good and neither is our pitching.   Our mound stalwarts have simply not gotten the job done this year on the mound.

Avg Runs Hits 2B 3B HR RBI Slug % BB HBP SO
18 IU B1G .293 109 171 20 4 21 103 .449 78 15 115
19 IU B1G .274 82 119 18 3 9 66 .391 58 14 91

Today's the day for Hooser dramatics on the ball diamond.  Lloyd crushes a 3-run homer in the bottom of the 9th for an IU 7-6 win over Minnesota and in the bottom of the 7th, a Gabbi Jenkins single wins it for the ladies against Rutgers 3-2.

Indiana Softball (33-19, 8-12 Big Ten) travels to Penn State (23-29, 6-14 Big Ten) this weekend to close out the 2019 regular season.  Tonight's game scheduled to start at 6:00; Saturday at 3:00 and Sunday at 1:00.  I'm attending a Dennis DeYoung concert tonight and won't be following the game so anyone else don't hesitate to jump in and let us know how the ladies do.

0-0, top of 5th

And at this point, we must assume mamasa fell asleep.   :farting_smiley:

The game was halted in the middle of the 5th due to weather and resumed earlier today.  In the top of the 6th, we loaded the bases and Penn State graciously walked in a run followed by a Baez single to make it a 2-0 game in our favor and our Hoosiers held on to get the win.  Game #2 of the weekend series scheduled to start at 2:00.

Lady Hoosiers win the second game 5-2 scoring all their runs in the first 3 innings getting 2-run homers from Westmoreland in the first and Radcliffe in the third.  Emily Goodin started and pitched 3 innings allowing 3 hits and both Penn State runs.  Foor and Trainer pitched the rest of the way and did not allow a hit in relief.

And that's it, Penn State wins 2-0.  Trainer and Goodin combined to only allow 2 hits, but the 4 consecutive walks by Trainer and the fielding error in the 4th were the difference.  We end the regular season (35-20) (10-13).

B1G tournament starts next Thursday in Bloomington.  Game matchups will be announced later this evening.
