Women start the season 0-2 after a 4-1 loss to Oregon State.  They play Northwestern tomorrow at 4:00 ET.

We scored first in the top of the 2nd after a Taylor Uden triple followed by an Annika Baez single.  OSU took a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the 5th, scoring one of the runs on Katie Lacefield error.  OSU hit a solo homer in the 6th to make it 4-1 and that was the game.

Tara Trainer pitched 5 innings and took the loss.  She gave up 6 hits, 2 walks and 3 wild pitches.  Emily Goodin pitched a scoreless 6th.  We only had 5 hits, got 2 walks and left 3 on base.

Oh well, tomorrow is another day!

Not a great start to the season as the women fall to 0-3 with a 5-1 loss to Northwestern.  IU scored first with a solo HR by Taylor Uden (2nd of the season) in the top of the 6th.  But NU came right back with 5 in the bottom of the inning.

Trainer pitched 5 2/3 innings before Emily Goodin took over and immediately created a bases loaded situation with 2 walks.  NU pushed across another run to make it 5-1 after Goodin couldn't get an out and walked all 3 batters she faced including walking in a run charged to Trainer.  Josie Wood replaced Goodin and ended the agony.

Trainer charged with all 5 runs gave up 4 hits.  She had 6 K's and 1 BB.

In addition to Uden's homer, we had 3 additional hits.

May win #1 will come later tonight.

Must be time to fire the coach.  We dropped our 4th game of the new season to San Jose State 2-1.  Both teams scored a run in the 1st, Hoosiers on a steal of home by Rebecca Blitz when SJS tried to nail Uden's steal of second base.  Game stayed tied to the top of the 7th when SJS scored what proved to be the winning run.  Women put 2 on base in the bottom of the 7th but couldn't score.

Women had 6 hits scattered throughout the batting order and left 3 on base.  Josie Wood started and pitched 4 innings giving up 1 run on 1 hit.  She had 7 K's but 5 walks and hit 2 batters.  Tara Trainer pitched 3 innings allowing 1 run on 1 hit.  She had 4 K's and 1 BB.

Ladies try to salvage the weekend today at 1:30 ET against Arizona State.

Indiana Softball fell to Boston College and Georgia Tech in Friday's Big Ten/ACC Challenge hosted by the Yellow Jackets.

"With our group we just have to continue to grind and not focus on the 'why' of things but focus on the 'what' and 'what's important now,'" said head coach Shonda Stanton. "What can I do to help my team be in the best position to win a ballgame? I think it is important to have a positive mindset and focus on the small things. We're one pitch away and one big hit away."

Boston College 4, Indiana 0
The Hoosiers were shut out of the day's first game as sophomore Gabbi Jenkins picked up Indiana's only two hits of the game.

The Eagles jumped up early in the first inning and never relented. A pair of walks and a single from Carly Severini loaded the bases for Boston College with one out before Jordan Chimento's RBI groundout brought Murphy home to give the Eagles an early 1-0 lead. A single by Lexi DiEmmanuele to first base extended the lead to 2-0.

"The walks hurt us today – too many free passes," said Stanton. "At this point it's the little things that our hurting us."

Indiana looked to respond immediately as they had a runner reach third base in each of the first three innings. Blitz reached on a Boston College error and advanced to second to start the home half of the first. A groundout from Jenkins moved her to third, but Blitz was caught stealing to end the threat.

The Hoosiers again moved a runner to third base in the second after Makayla Ferrari walked, stole second and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Annika Baez. However, a fielder's choice caught her between third and home plate.

After IU junior Tara Trainer settled in to keep the deficit at 2-0 through the fifth, Boston College extended the lead in the sixth on an RBI single from CC Cook. A solo homer from Chloe Sharabba in the seventh rounded out the box score.

Georgia Tech 4, Indiana 1
In the nightcap, Indiana looked to rally late but ultimately fell to Georgia Tech, 4-1. IU's seven hits were the most in a game since knocking 10 in the season opener against Boise State.

The Yellow Jackets took a 1-0 lead in the second as Draven Sonnon sent a single to right field, plating Katie Krzus, who had reached on a leadoff single.

Georgia Tech loaded the bases with no outs to lead-off the third frame thanks to a walk, single and reach on a fielder's choice. Back-to-back walks made it 3-0 before a sacrifice fly from Kelsey Chisholm plated Rebecca Prairie.

Following up her two-hit effort against Boston College, Jenkins led the fourth inning off with a triple to center. However, the Hoosiers couldn't capitalize as they left her stranded.

One inning later, sophomore Bella Norton looked to get the IU offense going as she sent a one-out double to left center but a pop-up and groundout ended the frame.

Indiana saw solid relief outings from sophomore Emily Goodin and Emily Kirk, who came in for redshirt sophomore Josie Wood. Goodin went 3.1 scoreless innings, allowing just one hit while Kirk went 0.2 innings, coming in with two runners on but forcing a pair of grounders to keep the deficit at 4-0 heading to the seventh.

Sophomore Katie Lacefield led off the final inning with a single up the middle before coming home on a double from freshman Taylor Lambert to put Indiana on the board. It was the first career RBI by Lambert. After a pair of quick outs, senior Rachel O'Malley drew a walk but a strikeout ended the comeback attempt.

"We need to improve our situational hitting and stringing hits together," said Stanton. "It was nice to see that seventh inning with Lacefield and Lambert getting those shots there. I think right now, every individual needs some confidence at the plate. What we're seeing is when the chips are down and there isn't as much pressure, we're performing. When we have the pressure on and have runners in scoring position, we need to focus on our mental approach at the plate. You get confidence by continuing to work hard and, as a group, we need to continue to battle together. We'll fight through this and we'll be okay."

Up next for Indiana is a 10 a.m. meeting with Boston College on Saturday morning. The Hoosiers will conclude the Big Ten/ACC Challenge on Sunday against Georgia Tech.

Indiana Softball collected its first win under head coach Shonda Stanton on Saturday as the Hoosiers defeated Boston College in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge, 8-3.

The eight runs are a season high for Indiana, who was led by a 3-for-4 outing from sophomore Gabbi Jenkins and a career-tying three RBI from sophomore Katie Lacefield.

Boston College struck first in the second inning, sparked by a leadoff double from Lexi DiEmmanuele. She was brought home after a pair of Hoosier errors on a ball popped up by Emme Martinez, which was dropped by Indiana. Martinez scored on a fielder's choice by Annie Murphy to push the lead to 2-0.

Indiana answered with a big third inning, plating four runs to take a 4-2 lead. The four runs are the most in an inning for IU this season. Senior Rachel O'Malley became the first Hoosier baserunner of the game after drawing a one-out walk. After Jenkins beat the throw from third to earn a single, senior Rebecca Blitz walked to load the bases. A walk to senior Taylor Uden brought O'Malley home and cut the Boston College lead to 2-1. Lacefield then cleared the bags as she roped a three-run double down the left field line.

"Yesterday we talked about how we were one big hit and one big pitch away from winning a ballgame," said Stanton. "Today, we did an incredible job of drawing walks and chasing their starter. I was really impressed with us being selective at the plate and loading the bases up. You can't say enough about Lacefield coming up and clearing the bases. That was huge."

In the next frame, IU took advantage of a pair of Boston College errors and expanded the lead to 6-2. After freshman Annika Baez singled to lead-off the fourth, O'Malley was hit by a pitch. Freshman Taylor Lambert's chopper proved too much for Boston College to handle as she reached on an error and the ball got away from the first baseman, allowing pinch runner Sarah Galovich to score. As the Eagles looked to recover, an error by the Boston College third baseman gave enough time for O'Malley to come home.

Boston College got one run back in the bottom of the fourth as Martinez singled then scored on an IU fielding error to cut the IU lead to 6-3.

The Eagles looked to cut further into the deficit in the sixth after a catcher's interference call and single put two on before a walk loaded the bases. Redshirt sophomore pitcher Josie Wood got out of the jam as she made a great play on a grounder sent back to her to get the final out.

Indiana added a pair on insurance runs in the final inning as freshman Maddie Westmoreland doubled to right center, plating Lacefield and Uden.

Wood earned the win in the circle for IU as she went 4.0 innings in relief, surrendering just one run on five hits.

"I thought our pitchers were great today," said Stanton. "Josie did an incredible job coming in and protecting the lead. It was a collective team effort. I'm proud of this group, I felt like we turned a corner. We had pitching today and we had clutch hitting."

IU closes out play in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge on Sunday as the Hoosiers face Georgia Tech. First pitch is slated for 12:30 p.m. and will be broadcast on ACC Digital Network.

Indiana Softball dropped its final game of the Big Ten/ACC Challenge on Sunday afternoon to Georgia Tech, 4-1.

Indiana did out-hit Georgia Tech, 5-4, behind two-hit efforts by seniors Rebecca Blitz and Taylor Uden.

The Yellow Jackets struck first as they took advantage of a Hoosier throwing error on a sacrifice bunt to put runners on the corners with no outs to open the game. A sacrifice fly plated Breanna Roper, who had reached on a leadoff walk.

"We have to get out to a faster start," said Stanton. "We had the walk in the first inning and we had the error, then we got down early. I felt once we got down, we didn't play hard and that's the one thing I'd be disappointed in our group today. We have to understand there has to be progress in the process."

Indiana loaded the bases in the bottom of the opening frame on singles from Uden and sophomore Katie Lacefield, along with a walk to sophomore Bella Norton Norton. However, a strikeout left them loaded.

Georgia Tech extended its lead to 3-0 in the second as Kelsey Chisholm sent a two-run homer over the wall in center, bringing home Lilly Hooper, who reached on a lead-off single.

A solo homer from Hooper with one out in the fourth further pushed the Georgia Tech lead to 4-0.

Indiana got on the board in the fifth as sophomore Gabbi Jenkins walked and Blitz singled to third base to set things up for Uden, who collected her second hit of the day on an RBI double to left.

The Hoosiers looked for a final-inning rally as Blitz beat out a throw on a bunt single with one out. Uden reached as her long fly ball was dropped at the wall by the Georgia Tech left fielder. But a pop-up in foul territory and a groundout ended the game.

Junior Tara Trainer took the loss for Indiana, surrendering a pair of earned runs and three hits in 1.0 inning. Sophomore Emily Goodin came in for relief of Trainer, going 2.1 innings and allowing just one earned run on one hit. Redshirt sophomore Josie Wood also turned in a solid relief effort, going 3.2 hitless frames to keep the Hoosiers in striking distance.

"We have some pieces of the puzzle we can build around" said Stanton. "Now it's about improving that mindset, understanding the game and what we're going to do and how we're going to forge our identity to give ourselves the best shot to be successful on the ballfield."

Up next, Indiana visits Homewood, Ala. to play a pair of games against both Samford and Lipscomb. First pitch of the tournament for the Hoosiers will come Friday at 4 p.m. against Lipscomb.
