@IndianaSB: #IUSoftball checks in at No. 24 in this week's USA Today/NFCA Top 25 Coaches Poll. It marks the first time since May 7, 1996 that the Hoosiers have cracked the Top 25 in the Coaches Poll.

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana Softball (5-0), who checked in at No. 24 in this week's USA Today/NFCA Coaches Poll, heads to Durham, N.C. this weekend for the annual ACC/Big Ten Challenge. The Hoosiers will play a pair of games against host Duke (3-2), as well as two games versus Syracuse (1-3). Due to the weather forecast, the schedule has been slightly altered and Indiana will now play a pair of games Friday and single games on Saturday and Sunday.
 
IU is coming off its best opening weekend since 1990 as the Hoosiers went a perfect 5-0, capped by a 6-4 victory against No. 6 ranked and 2018 WCWS participant Georgia.
 
All four games will be streamed live on ACC Network Extra. Live stats and a radio broadcast for all games will also be available on IUHoosiers.com. Sam Neidermann will be providing play-by-play on the radio broadcast.
 
CHECKING OUT THE COMPETITION
Duke: The Blue Devils went 2-2 over the weekend, earning wins against Notre Dame and Liberty and falling to No. 9 Syracuse and No. 3 Washington. Duke played its first midweek game of the season on Wednesday, earning a 9-2 victory on the road against Campbell. The Blue Devils are batting .277 as a team led by a .462 average from Jameson Kavel and a .417 mark by Kristina Foreman. Caroline Jacobsen has also started hot with a .385 average and a pair of homers. In the circle, Brianna Butler (1.24 ERA, 2-0, 11.1 IP) and Amelia Wiercioch (3.39, 1-1, 10.1 IP) have carried most of the innings.
 
The Blue Devils are in the second season of the program as head coach Marissa Young led the team to a 29-27 in the inaugural campaign in 2018.
 
Syracuse: The Orange opened the 2019 season at the GCU Kickoff Tournament in Arizona, falling to San Diego State and twice to No. 4 Oklahoma before ending the weekend with a walkoff win against Grand Canyon. It marked the beginning of head coach Shannon Doepking's tenure with Syracuse as she was named to the helm of the program in the fall. The Orange hit .143 as a team during opening weekend as Bryce Holmgren led the bats with a .286 average. In the circle, Alexa Romero carried most of the innings, recording a 2.92 ERA with five strikeouts. Last season, Syracuse went 30-20 led by a .413 average with 57 hits, 34 runs and 33 RBI from Holmgren. Romero led the Orange pitching staff last year, collecting a 1.73 ERA with a 33-25 record and 264 strikeouts.
 
IU and Syracuse have met just once before, a 3-2 Indiana victory in 2008.
 
ACC/BIG TEN CHALLENGE
•This season will mark the second straight year IU has appeared in the Challenge, which began in 2016. Last season, IU faced Georgia Tech and Boston College in Atlanta, picking up one win against Boston College.
 
IU IN THE RANKINGS
• The Hoosiers earned a No. 24 ranking in the Coaches Poll, marking the first time since May 7, 1996 that Indiana has been in the Top 25 of the Coaches Poll. The 2011 team received votes and earned a spot in the media rankings.
 
• Indiana checked in at No. 22 in rankings from Fastpitch News, and No. 16 in the first Softball America poll. The Hoosiers were also ranked by FloSoftball, coming in at No. 21.
 
• IU received 21 votes in the ESPN/USA Softball Collegiate Top 25, placing them at 30th.
 
OPENING WEEKEND NOTES
• IU is one of just 31 teams across the country to go undefeated last weekend.
 
• Indiana outscored its opponents, 32-7. In addition, IU batted .311 as a team compared to a .198 opponent average.
 
• The Hoosiers were quick on the base paths in Boca Raton, stealing 17-of-22 bases compared to just six from opponents. At 3.40 stolen bases per game, the Hoosiers rank ninth in the nation.
 
• Sophomore Taylor Lambert led the way for the IU bats as she hit .462 with six hits, seven runs and six stolen bases.
 
• Sophomore transfer Grayson Radcliffe had an impressive debut as a Hoosier, batting .400 with six hits, five RBI and three runs. In addition, she came up huge against Georgia, delivering her first home run in an IU uniform on a two-run shot in the seventh, which proved to be the difference maker.
 
•  Junior Gabbi Jenkins picked up where she led off last season as she batted .400 with six hits, four runs, four RBI and three stolen bases in the leadoff spot.
 
• In the circle, senior Tara Trainer collected a 3-0 record, as well as a save. Trainer's three wins are tied for fifth most in the country.  Trainer went the distance against Georgia on Sunday for her first complete game performance of the season.
 
• Trainer collected 16 strikeouts over the weekend and moved into third all-time at Indiana for career strikeouts, surpassing Megan Roark (2003-06):

• Freshman Natalie Foor had an impressive debut in the circle, earning a pair of victories. In her first career start against Bethune-Cookman, she tossed a complete game, striking out four and surrendering just one unearned run. She also earned the win against FAU, going 4.0 innings and striking out four with one run allowed.
 
• Emily Goodin and Josie Wood also had solid relief outings for Indiana. Goodin earned a save for Indiana against Virginia as she tossed 2.0 hitless frames, retiring every batter she faced. Wood went 2.0 scoreless innings against St. John's, striking out three and allowing just one hit.
 
• Along with Radcliffe and Foor, Juvia Davis (LF), Tete Hart (LF) and Camryn Woodall (2B) got their first career starts as Hoosiers. In addition, Paige Chitwood saw her first action of her college career as a pinch runner.
 
WHAT'S AHEAD IN 2019
The Hoosiers have 56 games on tap in 2019, including 17 to be played at Andy Mohr Field. Indiana will play 17 games against 2018 NCAA Tournament participants and nine games against teams who finished the season ranked or receiving votes in the final USA Today/NFCA Coaches Poll of the year. In addition, Indiana will play 14 games against teams who finished in the top 50 of the 2018 NCAA RPI. This week's Coaches Poll saw five opponents either ranked or receiving votes.
 
The Hoosiers open the season with 19 straight games and 25 of the first 26 away from Bloomington. After this weekend's ACC/Big Ten Challenge, Indiana travels to Mercer for the Black & Orange Challenge followed by a visit to LSU for the Purple & Gold Challenge. Indiana will open home play at Andy Mohr Field against in-state foe Butler on March 5. The Hoosiers return to the road that weekend to play in the USF-Clearwater Parks and Recreation Showcase Tournament before staying in the Sunshine State for a Tuesday night doubleheader against Florida Gulf Coast on March 12. IU's final tournament weekend features the annual Hoosier Classic March 15-17 at Andy Mohr Field. The final non-conference game of the season is a March 26 visit to Louisville. Road Big Ten battles include Ohio State, Michigan, Wisconsin and Penn State. Home conference contests feature Michigan State, Purdue, Maryland and Rutgers.
