Sam Travis led off the frame with a solo home run over the Maine Monster to tie the game 1-1, it was Travis' third homer of the season.

Sam Travis broke a 2-2 tie with an RBI double in the bottom of the sixth inning and the Sea Dogs defeated the Akron RubberDucks 6-4 Saturday night in front of a sellout crowd at Hadlock Field.

The Red Sox have a pretty solid group of first baseman on their Major League roster. Currently, Boston has Hanley Ramirez taking up the starting first baseman role and Travis Shaw holding it down as his back up, not to mention Brock Holt and David Ortiz there for emergency situations. With that being said, Ortiz is retiring following the season and it’s expected that Ramirez will slide into the designated hitter position in his absence. That just leaves Shaw and super-utility Holt, who will be too busy holding down other positions to play first base for an extended period of time. Who will they turn too in the future?

Smart money is on Sam Travis. The right-handed hitting first baseman is one of the Red Sox top prospects, and for good reason. Between Class-A Advanced and Double-A last season, Travis hit .307 (.381 on-base percentage) with 32 doubles, six triples, nine home runs, 78 runs batted in, and 19 stolen bases. Did I mention he’s only 22-years old?

The two worst tools that Travis possesses are his defense and his base running abilities, and both are considered average-to-slightly-above-average. His contact and power are both highly impressive, and will only continue to get better. Travis has the bat to consistently hit .300 in the Majors, and while he doesn’t have much home run power, he will pile up plenty of extra base hits, and could still find a way to knock around 20 homers.

Thanks to a impressive early seasons in the Minors, great potential, and a stellar work ethic; the Indiana University product should be in the Majors sooner-rather-than-later. I’m not just saying that because I want the Red Sox first basemen to be the new law firm (shoutout to BenJarvus Green-Ellis) of Travis (Shaw) and (Sam) Travis.
