IU Women's Water Polo

Recommended Posts

While only in 1994 did a non-California team win a national championship in the 30 year history of the tournament (only 3 schools have won since 2000), the good news is this is Indiana's 3rd appearance in 14 years since the NCAA took over! Our last visit was in 2009 and it's great to see us there again! Hope this is a sign of the general improvement of IU Athletics as a whole not just BB.

Though, if BB wants to improve, I'll certainly not argue with them.

The Indiana Hoosiers have earned an eight seed in the 2014 NCAA Tournament to be held at the USC Aquatic Center in Los Angeles May 9-11 the selection committee has announced.

Indiana, 22-5, will host a play-in game between No. 9 Wagner at Councilman-Billingsly Aquatic Center in Bloomington Saturday May 3 at 1:30 pm EST. Tickets will be $5.00 for adults and $3.00 for students. The first 200 students at the door will be admitted for free.

Kelly Matthews led the Hoosiers to a convincing 12-4 victory over the Sonoma State Seawolves. Matthews scored a team high five goals, added one assist, and led the team with six steals. She scored a goal in all four quarters and had two in the third quarter.

Head coach Barry King thought the team came out with great energy and focus. "The first couple of minutes was like loosening a lid. I thought we had a couple of chances to score but we just didn't finish. Once we got the first one the energy of the team really picked up."

Jennifer Beadle started the scoring barrage in the first quarter with one of her two goals on the night. Karrie Kozokar scored the final goal of the period to take a 3-0 lead. She scored her second goal in the second quarter to make it a 5-0 lead for the Hoosiers. At the half, Indiana led 5-1.

Kate Pipkin added a goal in the third quarter to push the lead to 9-3. She and Beadle both scored goals in the fourth as well. Sarah Myers closed out the scoring for the Hoosiers with a fourth quarter goal. She also won all four sprints for Indiana.

Mary Campbell continued her solid, consistent play in goal by allowing just three goals through three quarters. She added seven more saves to her season total. MacKenzie Bonk played the entire fourth quarter, saw five shots on goal, and made four saves.

Indiana will be back in action with two games tomorrow. At 9:00AM they square off against CSU East Bay and will face Mercyhurst at 1:00PM.

Water Polo Sweeps Day Two of Fluid Five

Mar. 19, 2016 Women's Water Polo
STORY LINKS
BOX SCORE (CSU EAST BAY)
BOX SCORE (MERCYHURST)
After getting behind early, the Hoosiers rebounded in a big way. They improved their season record to 13-5 with a convincing 13-6 win over the CSU East Bay Pioneers. Jennifer Beadle scored first for Indiana by way of a powerplay goal. She added her second goal of the contest with under 30 seconds to play to tie the game at two.

Candyce Schroeder took over the second period with three goals and one assist. Kaybree Alright scored in the frame as well. Indiana took a 6-3 lead to the half time break.
Kate Pipkin scored her lone goal of the match in the third quarter. Beadle added her third goal less than a minute after. Kelly Matthews earned a 5m penalty shot with 2:27 left in the third. She capitalized on the attempt to score her first goal of the game. Schroeder closed out the third quarter with a goal on the assist from Pipkin. IU led 10-4 heading into the fourth quarter.

Matthews added another 5m penalty shot, assisted on a Karrie Kozokar goal, and scored another goal assisted by Kozokar.
Sarah Myers added two assists to the Hoosier offensive attack and also won all four sprints.

Mary Campbell continued her strong play, allowing just six goals in the match. She made six saves in her 12th start of the season.

In game two of the day, against the Mercyhurst Lakers, Indiana finally got off to the quick start that coach Barry King was looking for. "Every game we look to start fast. We have a couple sets that we like to run early that give us the best scoring chances. The first two games of the weekend we did not capitalize on those opportunities, this game we did. And that is important, that quick start helps build the confidence of the team."

Beadle scored the first two goals of the game again for the Hoosiers. The first came just 24 seconds into the game. Her goals were the only ones in the quarter for either team.

Matthews scored the first three goals of the second quarter to push the lead to 5-0. Pipkin and Sarah Young both added second period goals for the Hoosiers. The half time lead was 7-1 in favor of Indiana.

In the third quarter Indiana got on the board quickly again. This time it was Schroeder scoring within the first 40 seconds. Kozokar added a goal just 40 seconds later. Matthews and Beadle both added goals to give them four each for the game. After three quarters the lead was 12-3.

The fourth frame saw Bronwyn Smith tie her career best with two goals. Mackenzie Rosenthal scored her first career goal with a 1:36 on the clock. The final score was 15-5.

MacKenzie Bonk earned her first start of the weekend. She played very well, surrendering five goals while making 11 saves.

Indiana will be back in the pool tomorrow when they dual Gannon at 10:00AM.
