Cody Latimer - Orlando Guardians (XFL)

Recommended Posts

Hey, Mike. Love the mailbag. Any chance that we might see Cody Latimer this season? Andre Caldwell has had his chances; Wes Welker just does not seem like the same player this year. And with Emmanuel Sanders' recent concussion, it seems like it may be the right time to give the highly touted rookie a shot. What do you think?

Thaddeus - I agree. It's time for the Broncos to take the training wheels off Latimer, their second-round draft pick this year. Not necessarily because of problems with Caldwell and Welker as receivers. I thought Caldwell performed quite well Sunday at St. Louis in what was his first significant chance at playing time this year.

It's just that Latimer would bring some added strength, toughness and physicality to an offense where all the talk is about how it needs more strength, toughness and physicality.

Latimer was the ninth of 11 receivers taken within the first two rounds of the 2014 NFL draft. The Broncos had him ranked in their top five or six in part because he was considered the best blocker among the draftable receivers.

Like so many rookie receivers, Latimer has been slow to pick up the nuances of the position. It's not just route running. It's knowing what routes Peyton Manning wants his receivers to run after reading the defense while lined up at the line of scrimmage. It's knowing how to get off the line of scrimmage when a linebacker comes over to deliver a pop of the pad or cornerback is lined up two feet away from the grill of the facemask.

The problem is, once the season starts, it's difficult for a rookie to develop because he doesn't get many, if any, practice reps during the 11-on-11 team sessions. Practice time is limited so 95 percent of the reps go to the first teamers, 5 percent to the second teamers.

But it's time to start giving Latimer more work in practice, then determine whether he shows enough improvement and understanding to start playing a little on the remaining Sundays.

‏@Broncos: First-team reps. A few nice catches.

No one could benefit more from Demaryius Thomas' absence than Latimer, a seldom-used backup last year, who projects as the Broncos' No. 3 wide receiver but moved up in Thomas' absence.

That provided him plenty of repetitions with Manning during Wednesday's work, and he responded with some nice receptions, including a medium-range slant in which Manning led the second-year pass-catcher perfectly for the grab.

But others made some plays with various quarterbacks,

"There's going to have to be some young receivers (who) really step up, and Cody's one of those guys," Kubiak said. "I think it's a very competitive situation right now.

"But, yes, it's an important month for Cody," Kubiak added a moment later.
