IU Hoosier41

Gm 14 - Indiana vs Iowa Plus/Minus

Recommended Posts

Welcome to another edition of the Plus/Minus analysis for your Indiana Hoosiers! As always, there are normally some questions about Plus/Minus and what it is actually calculating. It is important to note, that the Plus/Minus doesn't show how a player individually performs. All it shows, is how Indiana performs AS A TEAM, when that player is in. For instance, when Jordan Hulls was in the game, Indiana outscored Iowa by 3 points. When Hulls was on the bench, Indiana outscored Iowa by 1 points. Over the course of the season, these stats will grow and develop trends. That is what we hope to identify.

*Just in case you forgot, here is a quick breakdown as to what the +/- Player Analysis is looking at. Example: Here is a quick example of how the +/- stat is determined. Zeller, Watford, Ferrell, Hulls and Oladipo start the game for IU. Therefore the score is 0-0. Coach Crean makes his first substitution at 15:00 with the score IU up 15-10. Sheehey comes into the game for Oladipo. For this stint in time, Oladipo would earn a +5 (while Oladipo was in, IU increased their lead by 5 points). The Lineup of Zeller, Watford, Ferrell, Hulls and Oladipo also earned a +5. This will continue throughout the game.

Game +/- vs Iowa

iowa-plus-minus.pngKey Points

  • There are now three main columns; On Court, Off Court, Player Impact. The first column (On Court) shows the +/- numbers for Indiana when that player was on the court. Same can be said for the 2nd column, except it shows what IU did when the player was on the bench. The final column Player Impact, shows the overall impact that player had on the game.
  • Cody Zeller, Yogi Ferrell, Christian Watford, Derek Elston all show a positive +/- when in the game, and negative when not in the game.  Throw out Derek Elston's as he only played 5 minutes.  Interesting to see those players have positive plus/minus.
  • Will Sheehey - Surprised to see him -6 for the game.  When you pull up overall stats, Will had a pretty good game.  The key point to remember with plus/minus, is this information relates to HOW THE TEAM performed when a player was in the game.  This is not an individual metric to rank players performance.

Season to Date +/-

iowa-season-plus-minus.png

Key Points:

  • The chart above shows the Plus/Minus for the entire season. The main issue with this chart, is there were a lot of blowout wins involved.
  • Quick comment on the Impact Column. What this does, is show the difference between Pts/Min when the player is IN vs Out of the game. Let's take Jordan Hulls for instance. So far this season, when Jordan was in, Indiana outscored their opponent by 0.88 points per minute. When Hulls was on the bench, Indiana out scored their opponent by 0.51 points per minute. Therefore, Hulls impact on the game is an ADDITIONAL 0.37 Pts/Min.
  • This Plus/Minus stat is not an indication of how Each Player played. It is a determination of how Indiana as a TEAM, performed while that player was in.

Lineups for the Game:

Iowa-Game-Flow.png

Key Points:

  • Above you can see the lineups for the night. See how the game progressed as you move from the top downward.
  • Overall, Coach Crean used 13 different lineups. (7 Positive, 1 neutral, 5 negative)
  • There were 29 different stints in the game (12 Positive, 5 neutral, 12 negative)
  • Each stint changes when a Coach Crean makes a substitution.  This is another way to break the game down into smaller segments.  I like to look at this chart and see how Coach Crean's substitutions worked for him.  Obviously, after any red stint, you would like to see Coach Crean make an adjustment back to green.

Best Lineup of the Night:

Lineup-Of-the-Night-Iowa.png

The best lineup of the night consisted of Ferrell, Hulls, Oladipo, Watford and Zeller. The Hoosiers outscored the Hawkeyes 21-14 during this unit's 10 minutes on the floor together. This unit shot a miserable 38% from inside the arc and 20% from outside.  How is this the lineup of the night?  5 Offensive Rebounds plays a big role in this determination.  This lineup scored 10 of their 21 points off second chance points.  On each offensive rebound, Indiana was able to get points.  Indiana also turned one of their steals into a made three pointer.

Conclusion:

Indiana used a balanced attack to beat Iowa.  This was a key game for the Hoosiers to win in Iowa City.  One interested note we found while putting this analysis together was Coach Crean's limited playing time for Yogi Ferrell and Jordan Hulls in the same lineup.  Remember our post last week about how beneficial playing Yogi and Jordan together?

Indiana's best two stints of the game featured lineups with Jordan and Yogi (+7. +5).  If only Coach Crean read BtownBanners.com!

Very interesting, but stats can't tell the whole story.  Oladipo was the player of the game.  Some things are just immeasurable.

I don't doubt that for one second.  Oladipo has been the player of the game for the majority of the season.  Incredible talent he is.

Without question, Oladipo has been the most consistent player this season. I think the biggest take away from these stats is that Jordy and Yogi can be in the game together effectively, without taking too much damage for lack of size on the court.  Should be interesting to see these numbers against bigger teams, though definitely good to see that they carried over from preseason to the first B1G game.

As much of a presence Vic is on the court, I really hope that Hanner can become just as much of one. I think if that can happen at some point, he will make just as big of an impact

I'm extremely excited to see what Hanner can become with a little more development.  He has so much raw talent and athleticism and you can tell that he has the potential to be one heck of a player. I hope he gets a lot of decent playing time this year because that kind of experience as a freshman could really speed up his development like it did for Will and Vic.
