(2014) PF Matt Cimino to GW

Recommended Posts

A review of his play at the Classic:

6’10 Sr. Matt Cimino of Worchester Academy: Cimino may be one of the top unsigned “bigs” in the country. While he has a slender build, he is highly skilled offensively. He has a nice arsenal of moves in the paint with the jump hook being his favorite weapon. Cimino has good hands and footwork in the paint, but could easily add weight and strength. Cimino finished with 22 points going 9-12 from the floor and 4-9 from the FT line. He collected 8 rebounds and had 3 block shots.

Another last ditch effort to get a big man next year. I like both him and Gustys. Don't know if I want more four-year players though.

I want four year players!

It's a college basketball team. I want kids that are here to stay and get a college degree.

It would be even better if those same kids are fantastic basketball players.

I want them too, but I don't want another situation like this year where we have to rebuild with a ton of freshmen again.

I personally hope we get one of these kids, because I think both may be an upgrade over what we have now behind Vonleh.

Then you may be a little unrealistic in this day and age, unless you want to be a pro developmental league team like Kentucky.

To me, the optimum recruit is a guy like Stan Robinson (or Will, or Vic). Good enough to be a key piece for a national championship team, but also at school long enough to get a college degree. With that comes a player who is far, far more productive during years three and four.

There are VERY few college basketball players that hang around long enough for a degree AND are immediate, instant impact mega-stars.

Balanced recruiting classes of players who will develop into something really good is the antidote.

The "balanced recruiting classes" is the key.  Another 4 year guy in this class will not to do anything to balance classes.  Part of the reason we're in this "rebuild" (we shouldn't be rebuilding at this point, period) is because our classes haven't been balanced.

Excellent post.  Like JS, I ditto the balanced class being the key.  When they are not balanced you end up on four year cycles where the early, young years of a class are rough but by the time that class reach its Jr. and Sr. years you're competitive again.  CTC has to find the balance or we're going to ride a roller coaster every four year cycle.

I'm no a huge fan of the JUCO system, but I don't mind using it occasionally to balance classes out, especially if you can fill a need in doing so.  That is why I'd love to see a JUCO big be a part of next year's class as long as he is not a project like Tijan.

I'd love to find a David West type, for those of you who follow the NBA.  A junk yard type of player.

http://www.insidethehall.com/2014/01/29/recruiting-notebook-mutual-interest-between-indiana-matt-cimino/

“I have some pretty serious interest in them,” Cimino said. “They’ve been showing me some love the past couple weeks, telling me they need a big man. They don’t know if Noah (Vonleh) stays and they just had a transfer so they’re kind of running thin on big men. ”

At 6-foot-10, Cimino could certainly help fill that void. A self-described versatile player, Cimino said he feels comfortable playing both inside and outside, as well as defending either the four or the five.

As far as his relationship with Indiana is concerned, though, it’s still a budding one. Cimino said Johnson planned on visiting him last Friday, however Cimino injured his ankle in the loss to Cushing and was not participating in practice. He said Johnson might visit him either this week or next week.
