IUWBB Wins 87-68 vs Milwaukee

 The Indiana women's basketball team won its tenth-straight game of the season with an 87-68 win over Milwaukee Wednesday night in Assembly Hall. IU is now 10-0 overall, which is the program's best start since the 1994-95 season.

 

For the second game in a row, three Hoosiers scored in double figures. Larryn Brooks led the team with 27 points. Her seven 3-pointers were a freshman record for IU. Senior Sasha Chaplin and Tabitha Gerardot added 16 and 13 points, respectively.

 

The Hoosiers (10-0) opened the game on a 6-0 run, led by freshman Alexis Gassion with four. For the fifth time this season, Chaplin scored the first points of the contest.

 

Midway through the half, Milwaukee (2-7) went on an 8-0 run and cut IU's lead to three, but the Panthers scoring stretch was broken up by a 3-pointer from Brooks with 9:08 to play in the half. The basket sparked a 14-4 run for IU. During the stretch, IU's Taylor Agler scored six straight points in less than a minute.

 

Indiana took a 48-35 lead into halftime. IU shot 50 percent from 3-point range and 51.4 percent from the field in the first half.

 

Coming out of the locker room, Chaplin took a charge on the defensive end, and then capitalized on four consecutive free throws to expand IU's lead to 52-35.

 

Starting from the 11:20 mark, both teams went scoreless for 2:34. After UWM player Avyanna Young made a free throw to end the scoring drought, IU edged out Milwaukee 22-16 the rest of the game.

 

Gerardot had a season and game-high three blocks to go along with her 13 points. Agler played a complete game scoring eight points, pulling down seven rebounds, tied a season high with four steals, and dished for a season-best five assists.

 

Indiana completed their sixth game with 10 or less turnovers and shot 33-of-66 from the field (50 percent). The Hoosiers dominated the points in the paint, 46-18, the most points IU has scored in the paint this season.

 

IU will take a short trip to Indianapolis to take on IUPUI on Sunday, Dec. 15 at 2 p.m. ET, which starts a three-game road trip for the Hoosiers.

 

Postgame Notes
• With the win over Milwaukee, the Indiana women's basketball team bumped its record to 10-0. This is the first time the Hoosiers have started 10-0 since the 1994-95 season, and the first 10 game win streak overall since that same year.

• For the fifth time this season, senior Sasha Chaplin scored the opening basket of the game.

• The Hoosiers never relinquished their lead, making it the seventh game this season that Indiana never trailed.

• The Hoosiers outscored Milwaukee 48-35 in the first half thanks in part to their 18-of-35 (51.4 percent) field goal shooting. This is the eighth half this season that IU has shot better than 50 percent from the field.

• Indiana finished the game by shooting 33-of-66 from the field (50 percent). This is the second game of the year that IU has shot 50 percent or better from the floor.

• IU dominated down low, outscoring Milwaukee 46-18 in the paint, a season high for points in the paint for the Hoosiers.

• The Hoosiers had just 10 turnovers compared to their 16 assists. This is the sixth game this season IU has committed 10 or less turnovers in a game.

• Indiana outrebounded Milwaukee, 39-30, marking the seventh time IU has outrebounded its opponent this season.

• As a team, Indiana finished with a season high 10 steals in the game.

• Freshman Larryn Brooks had her third 20-plus scoring game of the season with 27 points. Brooks made seven 3-pointers to tie for third on the Hoosiers all-time list for 3-point field goals made in a game and is the first freshman to hit that mark. Brooks has scored in double-figures in all 10 games.

• Brooks' 27 points ties for the ninth most points ever scored by an IU freshman in a single game. Through 10 career games, Brooks sits first (37 vs. Virginia Tech), is tied for ninth (27 vs. Milwaukee) and is 12th (25 at IPFW) in most points scored by a freshman in Indiana history.

• Sixth-year senior Sasha Chaplin scored the first points of the game for the fifth time this season. Chaplin scored 16 points, her fifth game this season in double figures and 34th of her career. She shot 6-of-7 from the field, 4-of-4 from the lien and had three rebounds.

• Senior Tabitha Gerardot scored 13 points and pulled down seven rebounds to go along with two assists and a career-high three blocked shots. Gerardot has scored in double figures seven times this season.

• Freshman Taylor Agler stuffed the stat sheet with eight points, seven rebounds, a season-high five assists and tied her season-high with four steals.

• Freshman Alexis Gassion scored nine points and dished out a season-high four assists.

• Senior Milika Taufa tied her season-high with eight points and grabbed a season-high eight rebounds. Taufa also collected a season-best three steals.
