#IUWS - 2013 NCAA Tournament

Recommended Posts

Tonight @ 7pm ET. Go Hoosiers! We can do this!

The Indiana women's soccer team will be making its fourth appearance in the NCAA Tournament this Saturday when they host DePaul. It will be the first appearance since advancing to the Sweet 16 in 2007. In three previous apperances, IU is 2-3-1 in the NCAA Tournament.

Indiana's first-ever appearance in the NCAA Tournament came in 1996, where the Hoosiers lost at Notre Dame, 8-1.

In 1998, IU returned to the Big Dance, defeating Wright State (3-1) before falling to Penn State, 2-1, in the second round.

Then in 2007, the Hoosiers defeated Toledo in overtime, 3-2, and then beat Purdue in West Lafayette on PK's before losing at home to Duke, 2-0, in the Sweet 16.

1998 (Second Round) at Penn State L, 1-2

1996 (First Round) at Notre Dame L, 1-8
*IU advanced on PK's, 5-4

THINK ABOUT THIS...
In leading Indiana to the NCAA Tournament in her first season with the Hoosiers, head coach Amy Berbary joined some elite company in the Big Ten. She is just the fourth coach in Big Ten women's soccer history to lead her team to the NCAA Tournament in her first season with the team.

Digging a little deeper, each of the three previous coaches that did it inherited teams that had advanced to the "Elite Eight" of the NCAA Tournament the year prior to their arrival.

THINK A LITTLE MORE...
Indiana is one of five schools to advance to the NCAA Tournament with a first year head coach, joining UCF, Jacksonville, South Alabama and UCLA.

Of those five schools, only Indiana and UCLA won their first round matchups and are still alive in the tournament this weekend.

BREAKING RECORDS
• IU set a new single-season record with 15 wins.
• Veronica Ellis' goal against DePaul in the First Round of the NCAA Tournament gave Indiana 43 for the year, also a new IU single-season record
•Shannon Flower recorded the 1-0 shutout in goal against DePaul, her ninth clean sheet of the season to set a new IU record for most shutouts in a season
•The Hoosiers have 46 assists this season to set a new school record
•Flower has also been in goal for each of the 15 wins, setting a new single-season record for wins by a goalkeeper
•The win against DePaul at Armstrong Stadium improved Indiana's record to 10-1 at home this season, the most home wins in a single season in program history.
•The Hoosiers opened the 2013 season in record fashion, going 8-0-1 over the first nine games to set a new school record for best record to start a season.

BERBARY'S BEEN HERE
Indiana head coach Amy Berbary is no stranger to NCAA Postseason play, as she is making her sixth straight appearance in the Big Dance. She helped guide Auburn to the NCAA Tournament all five years she was there before taking over in Bloomington this season. She also helped take Dayton to the NCAA Tournament as an assistant coach in 2004.
