Recommended Posts

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Indiana held on to earn a tough road win at IPFW on Tuesday night, 85-80. Four Hoosiers scored in double figures led by Larryn Brooks who had 25 points. Sasha Chaplin added 21 points in the effort.

Taylor Agler had 13 points for Indiana (2-0) as Tabitha Gerardot finished with 10 points in the game. IPFW (0-2) shot a perfect 24-of-24 from the free throw line and were led by Amanda Hyde's 33 points. The Hoosiers led from start to finish, but IPFW was at arm's length the entire night.

Tabitha Gerardot found Chaplin down low for a layup on IU's first possession to get the scoring started for the Hoosiers. Agler then intercepted an IPFW pass on the defensive end and went coast-to-coast to lay it in.

After a Mastodon field goal, Chaplin connected in the paint again while being fouled and completed the three-point play with a free throw to make it a 7-2 IU lead. IPFW scored again, but Indiana's Larryn Brooks responded with a layup and Agler followed later with a 3-pointer to give IU a 12-4 advantage with 17:18 on clock.

Later in the half, Agler and Taufa connected on 3-point field goals on back-to-back IU possessions to give Indiana its biggest lead of the nigh, 25-12, with 12:00 to go.

IPFW then started to string some offense together starting with a 7-0 spurt over a 1:30 span to pull within six, 25-19. Agler silenced the Mastodon attack briefly with a drive to the rim and reverse layup to push the Hoosiers ahead 27-19.

The Mastodons pulled within three points on three occasions before Indiana took a 43-38 lead into the halftime break.

Indiana began the second half building a 54-44 advantage when Brooks found an open Chaplin for a layup at the 16:58 mark. IPFW hung tough cutting the deficit to six before IU eventually made it a 12-point game, 74-62, with 5:59 to go.

The teams traded points as the scoreboard read 77-67 in IU's favor. IPFW's Hyde and Rachel Mauk each hit a pair of free throws to make it a six-point spread once again. IU's Brooks was fouled on the next possession and sunk a pair from the charity stripe to make it a 79-71 Hoosier lead.

Agler hit 1-of-2 free throws on Indiana's next possession before Rachel Rinehart nailed a 3-pointer for IPFW with 52 seconds on the clock to make it a 80-74 contest. After a pair of missed free throws by Brooks, Rinehart scored a layup for the Mastodons with 38 seconds to play with IU leading by just four points, 80-76.

Indiana's Brooks was fouled hard on the next IU possession and was called for a technical foul for reacting. IPFW's Hyde hit the two technical free throws to make the score 80-78 in Indiana's favor with 36 seconds remaining.

Brooks was then awarded her foul shots after that foul and hit two clutch free throws to stretch the Hoosier lead back to four points.

IU's defense forced an IPFW turnover and Brooks converted on two more free throws to ice the game. The Hoosiers held on for its first road win of the year.

To go along with her 25 points, Brooks dished for six assists with four rebounds. She connected on 13-of-15 free throws in the game. Chaplin was 8-of-12 from the floor to go along with seven rebounds. Agler just missed a double-double as she grabbed nine boards to go along with her 13 points.

The Hoosiers shot 48.1 percent (26-of-54) from the floor, including 55.0 percent in the second half. Indiana stepped up at the charity stripe going 29-of-40 (72.5 percent) from the free throw line.

Postgame Notes
• Indiana's 2-0 start marks the first time since the 2010-11 season that IU has won its first two games of the season.

• Four Hoosiers scored in double figures for the Hoosiers (Brooks 25, Chaplin 21, Agler 13, Gerardot 10). That feat was accomplished just once a year ago by IU in 2012-13.

• Indiana scored over 80 points for the second consecutive game, marking the first time an IU team has scored over 80 points in back-to-back games since the 2006-07 season. That year IU tallied 81 points against Illinois on Feb. 18, 2007 and then tallied 83 vs. Northwestern on Feb. 22, 2007.

• In the first two games, the Hoosiers scored a combined 170 points, the program's best back-to-back game point total since November 2006 when IU scored 183 points combined in two consecutive games (85 vs. Valparaiso 11/15/06, 98 vs. Dayton 11/19/06).

IU will next take on Indiana State in Terre Haute on Friday, Nov. 15. That game will tip at 7 p.m. ET from the Hulman Center on ISU's campus.
