IU Men's Soccer beat Evansville 4-2

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana men's soccer team snapped a five-match losing streak in a big way Wednesday night with a 4-2 victory over Evansville (8-5-1) on Jerry Yeagley Field at Bill Armstrong Stadium.

 

The win pushes IU's record to 5-9-1 on the season.

 

It was evident Indiana had goals on the brain as Jamie Vollmer nearly gave Indiana a lead in the first minute of action. Femi Hollinger-Janzen played a ball up to Vollmer, and the speedy junior ran onto it past his defender for a 1v1 opportunity against UE goalkeeper Eric Teppen. Vollmer took his shot but Teppen came off his line for the block. The ball came right back to Vollmer, but his second attempt was high.

 

With 25:08 left in the first half, Dylan Mares played a ball into the box for Hollinger-Janzen, but he couldn't get his whole foot on it as Teppen made an easy save. Indiana came right back and Harrison Petts tallied his second goal of the season to give IU a 1-0 lead in the 21st minute. The sequence began with a cross into the box from A.J. Corrado, where an Evansville defender cleared the ball out to the top of the penalty area. Petts ran onto it and calmly slotted the ball home for the score.

 

Indiana went into the break up 10-2 in the shot tally, but the one shot-on-goal for the Purple Aces in the first frame required a brilliant save by Michael Soderlund as he pushed away a shot from Charlie Macias and managed to push the ball away from the on-rushing Evansville attacker.

 

The Hoosier offense got rolling again when Vollmer played a ball back to Patrick Doody, who one-timed it into the upper 90 for his second goal of the season and a 2-0 IU lead in the 59th minute.

 

Exactly a minute and 21 seconds later Andrew Oliver netted his first score of the 2013 campaign in the 60thth minute. Matt McKain picked up the assist on the play as his shot rebounded off Teppen, landing at the feet of Oliver who was all alone and staring at an open net.

 

Another bench player joined in on the scoring act for IU when Kyle Sparks also tallied his first goal of the year, giving IU a 4-0 cushion at 75:33. A.J. Corrado played a perfect ball over the top where Sparks ran onto it and smashed it home.

 

The Hoosiers would make it interesting in the final four minutes as Evansville picked up a pair of scores on scrums in front of the net. Tyrus Sciarra put UE on the board at 86:10 with his first of the year, then Macias took a shot that rebounded to Dylan Terry, whose fifth score of the season made it 4-2 with 2:40 left in the match.

 

Indiana finished with an 18-9 advantage in shots, with eight of the 18 on frame. Evansville put five on frame as Soderlund tallied three saves in the victory. Corrado led the Hoosiers with five shots.

 

Indiana's remaining schedule is three Big Ten matches, starting with a trip to Michigan on Oct. 26. Game time is 7 p.m. ET and the match will be shown live on the Big Ten Network.

Wait what, they won?  About time!  Hope this will be a turning point for them.  Great job Hoosiers.
