Tandon Doss

Recommended Posts

I live in Baltimore and obviously a huge Ravens fan. We had big expectations for Doss. Before the 2011 NFL Draft the Ravens front office gave Joe Flacco tape of receivers from that draft and Joe said to take Doss because he "looks easy to throw to." I realized Doss was young as a junior coming out, but he had the luxury of sitting behind a true professional in Anquan Boldin. In fact a lot of Ravens fans thought Doss had a similar game to Boldin. This season was supposed to be Doss's to breakout. For whatever reason it hasn't happened. Doss himself said earlier this season he didn't take football as seriously as he should have until he got cut by the Ravens this offseason.

Doss has shown flashes by making some very difficult catches. At the same time he's dropped a few easy ones. I'm sure there was a little bit of a shaken confidence at one point. What impresses me the most about Doss is how elusive he is with the ball in his hands. He's not the fastest guy on the field but he has subtle moves that make guys miss. This is why he has been so good on punt returns. The Ravens already have a dynamic returner in Jacoby Jones so it has been tough for Doss to get returns. Jones is a free agent after this season so maybe Doss will get full-time retune duties next season.

With Jaguars receiver Ace Sanders suspended four games and taking a leave of absence to deal with "personal issues," receiver Tandon Doss will step in as the No. 4 wideout and punt returner, reports the Florida Times-Union. The Jags' top three wideouts are Cecil Shorts and rookies Marqise Lee and Allen Robinson.

Is tonight a make or break game for a player who has yet to play for the Jaguars? In Tandon Doss’ case, possibly.

Signed in mid-March to provide depth at receiver, competition at the punt return spot and contributions on the other three core special teams units, Doss is expected to make his preseason debut against Atlanta.

A solid opening week of training camp earned Doss a promotion to first-team duties on July 31, but he sustained a sprained ankle on the final play of practice when he got tangled up with linebacker Geno Hayes.

Doss returned to practice Monday.

The scenarios (from most likely to least likely):

A: Doss looks healthy tonight and he makes the Jaguars as the fifth receiver and looks comfortable catching punts and opens the season as the main punt returner (he led the NFL last year with a 15.6-yard average) while Ace Sanders sits out his four-game suspension.

B: Doss doesn’t look 100 percent yet, forcing the Jaguars to keep a sixth receiver (Mike Brown).

C: Doss doesn’t look 100 percent and the Jaguars cut him on Friday.

Tandon Doss, a veteran wide receiver who re-aggravated an ankle injury in Thursday’s preseason finale against Atlanta, was placed on injured reserve.

^^Tandon back to work.

Tandon Doss, who spent all of 2014 on injured reserve after coming over from the Baltimore Ravens, knows there's still a place for him provided he can stay in one piece.

Doss caught 19 passes for the Ravens in 2013 and, more impressively, led the league with a 15.6-yard average on 23 punt returns. While his signing received scant notice compared to those of running back Toby Gerhart and guard Zane Beadles, Doss was expected to give the Jaguars a boost at a position affected by the suspension of Justin Blackmon.

But Doss injured his right ankle during training camp in late July and hurt it again in the final preseason game.

"I pretty much tore every ligament in the ankle, except for the Achilles," Doss said on Thursday after the Jaguars concluded their first work of organized team activities.

After the swelling finally went down, he underwent surgery in December. The fourth-round pick of the Ravens in 2011 is hoping to show he can make a difference on a team that finished in the bottom third of the league in both receiving yardage and punt return average.

"It's tough getting that groove back," Doss said. "From offseason workouts, where you have nobody across from you and you're just running routes on air, to jumping into people guarding you and pressing you, it's been tough. But I'm starting to come around."
