Class of '66 Old Fart

IU Baseball vs San Diego - March 7-8, 2020

Recommended Posts

What was originally scheduled as a 4-game series has been reduced to 3-games with the cancellation of the Friday afternoon game.

Due to expected wind chills in the mid-20's on Friday afternoon, Indiana University baseball announced changes to the team's weekend series against San Diego this weekend at Bart Kaufman Field in Bloomington, Ind.

Friday's game has been canceled and will not be made up. The two teams will now play two nine-inning games on Saturday, with the first game starting at 2:05 p.m. ET. The series will come to a close on Sunday, with first pitch at 12:05 p.m. ET.

Game #1 in the record books with a 9-2 IU win.  Bierman (2-1) goes 6.1 innings and gets the win.  He gave up 2 runs on 5 hits and 2 BB.  Scott relieved him and gets the save pitching 2.2 innings giving up just 1 hit.  We had 9 hits including 5 doubles and 1 triple.  Trinkle 3-4 and an RBI.  Richardson and Dunham both 2-4 with 3 and 2 RBIs respectively.

Game #2 in the bottom of the 1st ; no score.  Sommer on the mound.

I figured this was a 2 of 3 series given their pitching as long as we win tomorrow I am not mad. Second game we were down all night so not like we gave it away. Good win in first game and Bierman is turning into a stud as lead pitcher.

Pitching was not our strong point today as San Diego bangs out 16 hits and wins 13-5.   Tucker started and gave up 5 runs and 10 hits in 4.2 innings.  A succession of IU pitchers weren't a whole lot better.  In addition to the 16 hits, we walked 9, hit 3 batters and 7 of San Diego's hits were for extra bases.  We got 10 hits but could only score 5 runs and we left 13 runners on base.

We play at Evansville at 7:00 on Tuesday night and then host Cincinnati on Wednesday at 4:05.  Memphis will be in Bloomington next weekend for a 3-game series.

This was the first real clunker of the season. I expected the split yesterday but today was a no show. Braydon Tucker got beat up early and we never recovered. San Diego looks like the best team we will play outside Louisville Etc.

With that said I am increasingly worried about Tucker and finding a Sunday starter. He was great first game out and gotten increasingly worst every time. Bierman and Sommer are good for first two games of a series but Sunday is going to require a lot of runs if Tucker does not improve fast which could be long term issue.
