IUMS vs Ohio State 11/10/19 B1G Quarterfinal Game

Recommended Posts

If there's already a thread out there for today's game, I'll apologize but I couldn't find it if there is.  IUMS advanced to a Friday afternoon (4:00 ET) semifinal game against Maryland with a 2-0 win over the Buckeyes.  Friday's game will be televised on basic BTN.

The No. 9 Indiana men's soccer team (13-2-3, 7-1-0 Big Ten) outlasted the Ohio State Buckeyes (7-11-1, 1-6-1 Big Ten) in the quarterfinals of the 2019 Big Ten Conference Tournament by a final tally of 2-0 at Jerry Yeagley Field at Bill Armstrong Stadium on Sunday.

KEY MOMENTS
• Indiana managed to withstand a first-half shot barrage from the Buckeyes. Ohio State opened as the aggressors and fired off four shots in the opening 13 minutes of the contest, which included a three-shot frenzy in less than 20 seconds in the 13th minute. The IU defense blocked two of the three OSU attempts.
• Freshman Joshua Penn broke the scoring seal in the 42nd minute with a left-footed strike from just inside the 18-yard box through heavy traffic. The ball deflected off the goalkeeper but found the back of the net to give IU a 1-0 advantage.
• Ohio State was forced to play a man down after redshirt sophomore Devyn Etling was booked with a red card in the 51st minute. The card was the fourth shown to a Buckeyes on the afternoon.
• Redshirt junior A.J. Palazzolo sealed the victory with a goal in the 85th minute of action. Redshirt junior Spencer Glass spun a left-footed cross right in front of the far post to setup the score. Palazzolo tapped the ball in from the one-yard out to send the game into the final tally of 2-0.

NOTABLES
• Indiana qualified for the semifinals of the Big Ten Tournament for the seventh-straight season. IU has won 13 Big Ten Tournament titles in program history.
• With the victory, Indiana moves to 38-10-9 all-time in the league tournament. The Hoosiers also carry a series lead of 45-5-4 over the Ohio State Buckeyes.
• The Hoosiers are unbeaten in the last 37 home matches (33-0-4) with the last setback in Bloomington coming in the third round of the 2016 NCAA Tournament against No. 20 Virginia Tech.
• Penn moved into the top spot in both goals and total points for the Hoosiers this season. His six goals and 14 points lead the Indiana roster.
• Palazzolo has notched three goals this season and eight for his career.

HOOSIER POINTS
Goals: A.J. Palazzolo, Joshua Penn
Assists: Spencer Glass, Thomas Warr

We have to play Maryland at Maryland again. Hopefully we can win this one that matters.

Penn State has to tangle with Michigan. Michigan managed to force a tie on the road earlier this year. Hopefully they can get the win.

If we get past Maryland we will have a great chance against Michigan or Penn St. This is a not so rare case where IU and Maryland are the two best teams in conference despite Terps being 5 seed. It used to happen a lot given the nature of soccer and to IU many times where they are seeded lower than their talent.
