IUBB vs Portland St game thread 11/9 @ 2 pm BTN+

Recommended Posts

Rob may not be shooting well, but an awful lot of other sports people covering the game are commenting on how good his defense has been.  Also, he does have 6 of our 10 assists.
Last year Portland was #1 in the country in offensive rebounding %.  Right now, we have 40 total rebounds with 16 being off our own board.  Portland with 22 total rebounds and only 7 of their own board so I'd say we definitely controlled the glass today.   Also had read somewhere that it was a key for us to keep Goolsby out of the lane and off the FT line.  He has 5 reb. and only attempted 2 FT so again, I think we did things we were supposed to do.
TJD has a double-double.  Justin with 16 pts. and 8 reb.  Would love to know what his end-of-season conversation with Archie was that has brought about such a transformation.  Al another solid shooting night. Only 9 TOs with time running out.  Race with nearly a double-double with 10 & 9.  Jerome settling in.
We haven't blown them away, but an awful lot of positive things about this game.

Plenty of positives. But some of the same negatives that have plagued this team the last two years. The defense is a given. We know we will be good there for the most part. The offense still hasn’t evolved. The shooting still isn’t good. The ball movement has its moments here and there. Still start games incredibly slow. Maybe some of that gets a little fixed with Green returning, but hard to say.

At this rate we will have seven players with 8 or more points.

Interesting that in a more competitive game, the only player that didn’t see the floor in the first half was Damezi.

Didn't see the floor the entire game

I haven’t seen anything to indicate this season will be better than the last three so far. Still can’t shoot a lick.

You realize a 4% free throw shooting improvement last year and IU wins 4 more games? Making us a NCAA team easily. We are on pace to be a much better FT shooting team.

If the shooting doesn’t improve this year I do think Archie is going to have to do something.

We can be a decent team not shooting decently. But very very difficult to be elite without at least decent shooting.

Happy for the win. But continued poor 3-point shooting will plague this team against better competition. Green may or may not help in that department. Green is streaky so when he's on that's great. When he's not he'll be like Phinisee was today.  Durham, Smith, and Jackson-Davis are carrying this club although Race Thompson had his best game as a Hoosier.

Duke and UNC put up 89 and 78 points respectively against teams that would have probably lost to Portland State today.
Man! I can’t believe how bad they suck this year!

Duke won by 30+  UNC was on the road. And this isn’t a one game problem.

I don’t think I we will ever be a live or die by the 3 team like under Crean. Which gave us exceptional 3 pt shooting teams occasionally. I think the ceiling of a Archie team shooting the 3 will be 35-37% in a good year.

With the new three point distance 35-37% will be among leading team % nationally

I think this team has a lot of potential. And I think this team will be better from 3 this year. This team will need to lean on the defense and evolve on offense. I’m not sure why some people are so negative after two games. JS looks like a different player this year and Hunter looks like he’s starting to figure it out. Rob is a true lock down defensive pass first PG. Al looks really good.... I really like this team.

Exactly, which is mind-boggling. Being poor at FT shooting means you're lazy, IMO.

I’m just hoping once we hit P5 teams on our schedule that the staff realizes we can’t start Smith-TJD-Brunk and be successful. We will get eaten alive on D. Our best lineup is either 3 guards with Smith and TJD as the 5 or 2 guards with Hunter at the “3”. Brunk should be coming off the bench IMO.

That's almost exactly what CAM has been saying this entire preseason. The young guys are coming along and, once the veterans are all back and healthy, this team has the potential to be pleasingly good.
