And then...there's this. DeVonte Green

Recommended Posts

Based on how he grew from his freshman to sophomore and sophomore to junior season it is possible for Devonte to average 12pts 4rb 4ast and a couple steals a game. That would be huge for him. Keep the turnovers down and good shot selection.

I don't know why I'm surprised, but I am.   He has zero chance as an NBA player right now.   He has the ability  in some areas, but not the brain; and nowhere near the ball handling.  I know he's investigating; but wow...  Not all college players are NBA players.   College players who shoot less than 40% for their career and have basically a 1:1 A/TO ratio do not make it in the NBA.   But....good for him.  I don't think I'd hire an agent.

Edit :  Credit to Old Fart and Stromboli for making me aware that I need to explain :  My point is I think he;ll hear from NBA scouts and anyone he asks the same things he is hearing from Archie and anyone who objectively evaluates his game.  I would like to see a player like him have enough self awareness to work on his own rather than having to "declare."  I think he'll be back, but it surprised me he took this step.   Lots of players a lot closer than he is don't take this step.   It just surprised me....but then, it didn't.

I'd say there's about a 0% chance Devonte Green ever plays in the NBA. Hopefully that becomes someone else's sig line someday, but I don't think many of these kids realize how difficult it is to make an NBA roster.

I normally agree, but then I watch Landry Shamet drill a game winning three in a playoff game against arguably the greatest NBA team ever.

There’s room for players like Devonte if they have the work ethic.

Based on what? He wouldn't be an elite athlete at the NBA level but he does have the athleticism to play guard in the NBA. His skills aren't at a high enough level yet, but an offseason of mercurial growth is not out of the realm of possibility for any player as much as this board loves being negative. Obviously Buddy Hield was a superior college player to Devonte(he was B12 POY as a junior before returning for his senior year), but even a top line player can have an explosive summer of growth.

Maybe hearing from NBA scouts will motivate Devonte more and he'll have his best summer yet. Maybe he would've done that anyway. Maybe it doesn't happen. In any case I don't think talking to some teams and maybe working out in a few open gyms with some NBA guys is going to be a negative.

His brother carved out a pretty good career as a specialist. I know Danny is bigger, but Devonte is a better all around player. Definitely not saying he will be playing at the next level,  but you never know.

You have to be desperate to take shots at a kid to complain about stuff like this. He wants to play in the NBA, hearing from prospective employers only makes sense. It's really that simple.
Declaring isn't "taking advantage of the system," either,  it's using the process as it is designed - to gather feedback and make an informed decision on remaining in the draft or returning to school.
No one knows what Archie is telling Devonte and no one can say whether NBA scouts would have the same critiques. Jim Boeheim said Michael Carter-Williams wasn't ready to go pro but last I checked he's still in the league so saying any person that knows anything about basketball would give him the same advice is foolish. You can find coaches or scouts or GMs or other basketball people that disagree about this or that player.
Devonte doesn't have the game to make the league right now but there is nothing wrong with exploring the process to get an idea of how the league he wants to work his way into views him. People are really searching for an issue where there just isn't one.

One more time for the people in back.

Maybe the other guys just don’t share it as much but based on his Instagram stories, I’d say Devonte puts in the most extra work on team. Never got the hate for a player with a work ethic and one who plays with a fire on a team that desperately needed both. For sure my favorite Hoosier on the team.

I don't think there's an argument for Devonte being a better all around player.. His brother was a 5 star, top 20 recruit while Devonte was a 3 star. His brother averaged 11.5/4.9 as a junior for a Final Four team and then 13.1/4.7 as a senior on a national championship team. I like Devonte, but he's putting up worse numbers on worse efficiency on a much worse team.. Anything can happen next year, though.

Any chance Devonte (or any of the others who declared) actually don't come back?  I don't think any would be drafted, or even invited to summer league, but is overseas an option for them at this point?  I can't imagine a season with 3-5 open scholarships during the summer prior....

It's a slow Hoosier News day, just thinking out loud here....
