At Iditarod’s halfway point, Nic Petit takes over as official leader.

he Iditarod has an official leader — Girdwood’s Nic Petit, last year’s runner-up, who zipped through the ghost town of Iditarod around noon Thursday with a full team of 14 energetic dogs.

At 12:37 p.m., 24 minutes after Petit, defending champion Joar Leifseth Ulsom of Norway arrived with 11 dogs in harness and one dog in his sled basket. He didn’t immediately return to the trail.

Aliy Zirkle of Two Rivers beat both men to the checkpoint that marks the halfway point of this year’s 1,000-mile race, but unlike Petit and Leifseth Ulsom, she has yet to complete her 24-hour layover. She was about halfway through her break when Petit and Leiftseth Ulsom showed up.

A weary Zirkle appeared to be carrying a dog in her sled basket when she reached Iditarod at 1:38 a.m. Thursday.

In a daylight interview with Iditarod Insider several hours later, she said the tussock-studded 80-mile run from Ophir to Iditarod was the worst stretch she’s seen in the first 432 miles of this year’s race.

Iditarod Day 6: Nic Petit reaches Grayling with 4 mushers giving chase out of Anvik

Nic Petit reached the checkpoint of Grayling on Friday, after driving the roughly 20 miles from Anvik.

According to GPS data from the Iditarod trail, four mushers have also checked into, and out of Anvik, and are now approaching Grayling as well.

Those mushers include Jessie Royer, Joar Leifseth Ulsom, Pete Kaiser, and Mitch Seavey.

Petit is listed as resting according to the Iditarod tracker. While he's in the lead, Leifseth Ulsom is listed as having taken an 8 hour layover, whereas Petit has not yet.
