Brass Cannon

So some concerns I’m having...

Recommended Posts

I think we were completely overmatched in talent last night. The guys Crean left are just bench players. With the exception of Morgan. Archie needs to get more of his guys in there before my iu basketball world starts crumbling again. I also think the motion offense is outdated and had a lot to do with our TO's. I was very impressed with dukes movement and off ball screens. Let's face it, basketball is a game of screens now. And damn, I thought Romeo was way better from 3 than what he has shown
I agree, good post

Let's say that coach has a plan for developing this team.  If he doesn't we have the wrong coach, but I'll not argue that at this point.  He had players returning and a good recruiting class coming in, so it was expected that we would have a better product on the floor than we did last year.  Then the nightmare begins with injuries and our bench disappears into the training room.  Suddenly the coach's hands are tied and the "plan" goes out the window.  He is forced to play players too many minutes and in some cases in positions that they were never intended to play.  The result is lackluster performances against inferior teams and a blowout defeat to a very good team that simply outclassed us.  Of more importance is team chemistry and roles have been perverted by bad breaks injury wise.  So the big questions is how do we get this train-wreck back on the rails?  I'm sure everyone has an opinion because that is part of the fun in being a Hoosier fan.  The only opinion that matters is Archie's but I'm not going to let that stop me from chiming in.  I think we only have two guaranteed starters on this team - Morgan and Langford, and Morgan is playing out of position.  Smith has earned some pine time and I'd move Morgan to the 4 which is probably his natural position.  Smith can be an energy guy off the bench until he can prove that he is able to handle the ball, make good decisions, pound the boards and finish in traffic.  Ultimately Davis is going to be the stating center.  I don't care how big Fitzner is, he is not going to play with his back to the basket.  He is an instant offense guy that can come off the bench and pop some 3s.  Maybe he can grab a few rebounds but don't expect an all around player.  That he isn't.  Since we have some big guards we can probably get by with playing only two bigs.  I'd play Durham and Langford on the wings.  Al has improved greatly this year.  He can play defense and can handle the ball if needed.  He has also demonstrated an improved offensive game this year.  I think it is significant that Romeo is our second leading rebounder.  However, he is not a shooter.  He is a slasher and he is having trouble doing that as his way to the basket is blocked by his teammates.  Get out of his way!  Phinisee is also a slasher that has demonstrated the ability to get by his man so I'd go with him at the point.  Unless his offense continues to develop McRoberts is a spot starter in place of Durham and instant defense and energy off the bench.  Green has ability but he consistently STOPS the offense with his dribbling and selfish play.  Anderson isn't ready yet for big time minutes.  I have no idea what to do with Forrester and Moore.  If Archie couldn't find minutes for them when we were shorthanded I don't know if they are going to help with injured players coming back.  Hunter is a wash this year.  By the time he gets back - if he gets back - roles will have been established.  The wild card is Thompson.  I really want to see this kid play but I have seen so little of him I don't know what I would do with him.  He could be a Smith without the warts.  He could be a bench buddy with Forrester and Moore.  I suspect he is a player, especially after a year of practice, but I just don't know.  So there you go.  I'd start Davis, Morgan, Durham, Langford, and Phinisee.  McRoberts, Green, Smith, Fitzner are my first four off the bench - depending on need at the time.  I'm praying that Thompson will come back and make me change my thinking.  Same for Hunter.

I like it

We demand success bure sure have not gotten much of it in 30 years . Louisville is a pressure cooker job and got pitino and mack to take jobs with them. Kentucky got calipari and kentucky is beyond a pressure cooker. Big name coaches want big name jobs. I honestly dont think any big names coaches wanted the iu job cause we are not a big time program anymore. I dont think it has anything to do with pressure at least for well known coaches.

Got that right!

Nothing like keyboard coaches to pinpoint exactly what’s wrong with the team and precisely how to fix it and ready to get rid of a coach they were praising a few months ago on bringing in this class.

At this point just making the tournament would be cheered by the fanbase. We can’t even do that. The expectations are not unreasonable.
Yeah and crean lasted 9 years. He would of lasted 2 at kentucky. Iu fans are very patient compared to what used to be expected. Its not a pressure cooker at all.

Calipari wanted the IU job before he went to Kentucky.  The job was open twice when he was at Memphis, we never pursued him.  I seem to remember hearing that Izzo was interested at one time too, but not sure how accurate that is.
Yes, the Indiana name still registers.
Rumors just like Donovan was. If it still registered we would have hired a more seasoned proven coach. Blie bl9ods dont have to hire mid major coaches. Just saying.

A little fact checking would help you. Do you know where Coach K came from before Duke? Many other examples.

I don’t understand why some are doubting Archie after less than 1.5 years at the helm. Did we think all of our bad habits would magically be fixed? It takes time to get players that play his way and to ‘unlearn’ old ways of playing that were not very productive. Expectation should be to make the tournament. This year. No more. I feel confident we will achieve that goal.

Archie has some talent. We're still thin to nonexistent down low and we have unreliable point play due to our options being a freshman and Green. Our best shooters are freshmen and there are some injuries still.
Anyone who expected a win last night is an idiot. Anyone calling for Archie's head is an even bigger clown. We weren't a good team by any measure last season other than where we finished in the conference standings due to a favorable schedule and weak Big Ten. We added some pieces to what was at best a mediocre lineup and they unraveled early in a hostile environment against one of the best teams in the country. It was a game few if any teams would have won this early in the season.
Archie isn't just amassing talent, he's implementing a system. A system that by his own admission will take several years for a team to fully get the hang of. A November game at Duke with freshmen guards isn't the time to judge it.

I’ve been asking this in several threads and haven’t seen a response so I will ask again. In all sincerity, what is Archie’s system? What are his tent poles that we should all look for and expect out of his teams? I thought at worst we would see a team that values the ball, plays hard and makes their free throws but haven’t seen that. I don’t see a system to our offense or defense, seems very out of whack

Give Archie time to get HIS guys in there first before we start running him out of Bloomington. He has had his first recruiting class for 7 games and we're 5-2 with a loss at possibly the best team in the history of college basketball and a tip in away from a big road win and people are jumping off the Archie bandwagon faster than I can type this. Give the guy some time before we critique the coaching methods...and just imagine if this recruiting class comes together like it seems. Next year we have a starting 5 of Rob, TJD, Brooks, Hunter/Smith, Al. Green, Race, Hunter/Smith, Franklin off the bench. That's a top 10 team easy. We will find out a lot about this team over the next month and where we really stand but until then...I will wait to make an assessment especially if we get Brooks and TJD to commit here soon.

Kinda tired of the “his guys” excuse 10 of the 14 guys on the roster are his guys and of the other 4 include Davis, Morgan, McRoberts and Green.

Al, Clifton, and Justin Smith are Crean recruits.

Also Archie hasn't even had the chance to play his 2nd highest ranked recruit. The "his guys" is a legitimate excuse bc Crean left the cupboard extremely bare and Crean really whiffed on that final Class that Archie inherited. Literally had ZERO players who could knock down a 3 consistently when he took over. Brought in Fitz, helped JMo develop his shot, McBob is a great spot up shooter now, and Durham has improved drastically from 3. I'll be patient and let him get his top 10 recruiting classes in year in and year out and if he's not winning at a high level next year and not consistently in the top 20 with the talent we should have then I will start agreeing with the pessimists on this board.

We, as a fanbase, are good at coming up with excuses and expecting things to get better. Injuries, new coach, 4 year systems, facilities, strength trainer, Refs, development, other guys players, help is on the way, etc, etc.

It’s exhausting.

How about we just go ahead and fire Archie 7 games into the season with his first recruiting class and search for a new coach. Maybe everyone would be happy here and all our problems would be solved. Brilliant!

Not what anybody wants. Just frustration setting in collectively that we aren’t very good despite having what seems like it should have been a good roster.

We will get a Win Saturday and feel better. Then the huge looming Penn State game.

I think it’s perfectly reasonable to question things that we see on the court. For example: competiveness and fire, mental toughness, fundamentals, defense, a coherent offensive system.

Look I love Archie, but all of those can/need to be instilled by the coach. We haven’t seen much, if any, of those things in the last 4 games.

He definitely has time to fix it, but it needs to be fast. Our schedule isn’t getting any easier.
