SCOUTING THE NITTANY LIONS
• Penn State faced a weekend split last week. On Thursday, the Nittany Lions dropped a 3-2 contest against Rutgers who were receiving votes in last week's coaches poll. In their match on Sunday at Ohio State, Penn State was able to put the Buckeyes comeback to a halt and win the contest, 3-2. Scoreless first half.  To my untrained eye, PSU was by far the aggressor but still only managed 5 total shots and only 1 on goal.  We seemed to spent the majority of the time passing the ball backwards and didn't mount that many offensive attacks resulting in only 3 total shots; 1 on goal.

SCOUTING THE TERRAPINS
• Maryland is coming off a weekend spent on the road. Last Thursday, the Terrapins faced Nebraska where two first half goals for the Huskers proved to be the difference. Maryland returned to action at Iowa where the Hawkeyes attack proved to too much to handle as the Terrapins dropped the contest, 4-0. Alyssa Porch leads the Maryland squad, tallying eight goal and one assist for 17 points. Protecting the goal, Erin Seppi leads the way 54 saves.

• The Hoosiers hold a slight advantage in the series, 2-1-2. Last season in College Park, Indiana would net a first half goal and was able to hang on for the victory, 1-0.

SCOUTING THE SCARLET KNIGHTS
• Rutgers saw stints at Iowa and Nebraska last weekend. The Scarlet Knights were able to pull out a 1-0 victory against the strong Iowa Hawkeyes team. Amanda Visco had the game winner. On Sunday, 120 minutes wasn't enough to decide a winner between the Scarlet Knights and Huskers as the match ended in a draw. Amirah Ali leads Rutgers this season with eight goals and three assists. In front of the net, Megan McClelland had started every match recording a 10-2-2 record with 49 saves.

• Rutgers is ranked No. 22 in the nation this week per the United Soccer Coaches Week Nine rankings. The Scarlet Knights are ranked No. 20 in the lastest Top Drawer Soccer rankings.

• The Scarlet Knights hold a 3-0-1 record in the all-time series against the Hoosiers. Last season, the match went into overtime after neither team could find the difference maker. The Scarlet Knights would net the game winner to pick up a 1-0 win in Bloomington.

LAST TIME OUT
• The Hoosiers split the weekend homestand last week with a loss to Penn State before earning a 1-0 decision over Ohio State on Sunday. On Thursday, Indiana was able to contain the Nittany Lions offense in the first half before letting up a late second half goal to drop the match. Bethany Kopel and the Hoosiers earned their seventh shutout of the season as Alaina Kalin's 10th minute goal would end being the game winner for Indiana.

0-0 tie with Maryland. I give van Benekom credit as he is really building a defense and we have given up just one goal in the last six games. The problem with that is we are just 3-1-2 during that stretch with three 1-0 wins, two 0-0 ties and a 1-0 loss. I like what I am seeing and clearly an improvement but the offense is really anemic. Its not that they are building and missing chances. Its that they can't connect on passes or even get an attack started.

Not a bad result on the road though.

Overlooked in all the euphoria of our football team becoming bowl eligible, the women had a home match against PUke for the Golden Boot.  Unfortunately, the boot kicked them in the derriere.

Indiana Women's Soccer concluded the home slate on Sunday where they came up short to Purdue, 2-1. Melanie Forbes scored the goal for the Hoosiers in the seventh minute.

KEY MOMENTS
• In the seventh minute, Melanie Forbes received a feed from Avery Lockwood that led to the first goal of the contest. The Hoosiers took the lead, 1-0.
• Purdue would answer with a goal in the 20th minute to tie it up at 1-1. The goal was scored off a free kick just outside of the box.
• Senior Meghan Scott had a look on target in the 31st minute of action but the Boilermakers goalkeeper was there for the save.
• Megan Wampler took the first shot of the second half by either team, but couldn't get the ball on target as it sailed wide.
• The Boilermakers saw their second goal of the contest in the 60th minute on Sunday afternoon to take a 2-1 lead.
• Looking for the equalizer, Madeline Carlson was able to tee up a shot inside the box but a Purdue defender was able to step in front of it.

NOTABLES
• Melanie Forbes led the Hoosiers on offense in Sunday's match with two shots and a goal.
• Sunday's match marked Jacelyn Smith's first start in her career with the Hoosiers.
• Bethany Kopel tallied one save. She now has 50 saves this season and 237 in her career.

HEAD COACH ERWIN VAN BENNEKOM
"Really tough result today, especially because we started the game so well. We played very well and were in total control of the game. We only have ourselves to blame with letting the quality of our possession drop after that. This one stings but hopefully we can use today as fire for Wednesday."

UP NEXT
The Hoosiers will conclude the 2019 regular season on the road at Michigan State on Wednesday Oct. 30 at 1p. Wednesday's matchup will serve as the makeup game from Sept. 27 when the match between Indiana and the Spartans was stopped in the 23rd minute due to weather.

• Seniors Chandra Davidson and Meghan Scott played in their final game as Hoosiers.

HEAD COACH ERWIN VAN BENNEKOM

On Sunday's game:
"First of all, congrats to Rutgers. We were not good enough on the ball in the first half which forced us to defend too much and too deep. Ultimately this resulted in their goal as well. In the second half we made some positional adjustments and I think we dominated the game from that point on. That being said, dominating possession is one thing but creating good goal scoring chances is more important."

What this season has meant:
"This season our group has proven to be able to compete with the best teams in the Big Ten. Besides that, I'm really proud and happy with the tactical and mental development of individual players as well as the team."

On Seniors Chandra Davidson and Meghan Scott:
"I would like to thank Seniors Meghan Scott and Chandra Davidson for their time at IU. Personally, I'm so happy I got to spend a year with both of them. It's safe to say that they are leaving their jersey in a better place than when they first put it on."
