Mackenzie Holmes has procedure on knee, may miss remainder of regular season

January 20, 2022 Mike Schumann

Indiana will be without leading scorer Mackenzie Holmes for an extended period, perhaps through the end of the regular season and beyond.

The IU women’s basketball program released a statement on Thursday afternoon indicating Holmes had a procedure on her knee today.

“Junior forward Mackenzie Holmes underwent a successful procedure on her knee on Thursday. She will immediately begin rehab,” IU said in the release.

In an interview on the Big Ten Network yesterday, head coach Teri Moren described the timeline for a possible return by Holmes this season.

“I do think that there’s hope that we’ll see Mack back on the floor,” Moren told Revsine on Wednesday.  “I don’t know how quickly.  I don’t have a timeline right now for you guys.  But we’re keeping our fingers crossed that we do see her back, whether it’s the end of February, beginning of March, and certainly the postseason.

“She’s a big part of what we do and we’ve missed her tremendously.”

Moren’s remarks to Revsine were before the knee procedure.

Holmes leads Indiana with 17.9 points and 8.2 rebounds per game.  She is also the team leader in blocks with 26 and field goal percentage (61.5 percent).

Indiana is on an extended absence due to COVID-19 protocols within the program.  Off to their best start ever in the Big Ten with a 6-0 record, the Hoosiers return to action on Jan. 27 against Illinois in Bloomington.

So is that code for arthroscopic surgery?

Seems so; probably some exploratory and clean up. Given that she can start rehab right away gives some hope that if she does hit the floor for the post season that she will be back in game shape by then.

More honors for Mackenzie.

Junior forward Mackenzie Holmes is one of seven players nationally to be added to the 2022 Wade Watch list at the midseason point, the Women's Basketball Coaches Association announced today. She joins teammates Ali Patberg and Grace Berger on the 37-player list.

Holmes is averaging a team-high 17.9 points, 8.2 rebounds and shooting 61.5 percent from the floor in 14 games. She has scored in double figures in 13 of 14 games, recorded three double-doubles and averages 1.9 blocks per game. Holmes currently ranks sixth in school history with 134 career blocks and became the 30th member of IU's 1,000-point club earlier this season. She has been sidelined with a knee injury since Jan. 5.

The Gorham, Maine native is making her first appearance on the Wade Trophy watch list this season as she has also appeared on the 2022 Lisa Leslie Award watch list, Naismith Trophy midseason watch list and Wooden Award midseason Top 25. She was also a 2021-22 preseason All-Big Ten honoree, The Athletic preseason All-American honorable mention and two-time Big Ten Player of the Week.

The Wade Trophy — now in its 45th year — is the oldest and most prestigious national player of the year award in college women's basketball. It is named in honor of the late, legendary Delta State University head coach Lily Margaret Wade, who won three consecutive national championships with the Lady Statesmen. First awarded in 1978 by the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD), now known as SHAPE America, the Wade Trophy has been presented to the WBCA NCAA Division I National Player of the Year since 2001. This is the first year that freshmen players are eligible for the award. However, no freshmen are on the Wade Watch list.

The WBCA will announce the four finalists for the honor in mid-March. The winner of the 2022 Wade Trophy will be announced in late March or early April on a date to be determined.

And still more recognition for Mackenzie.

Indiana junior forward Mackenzie Holmes was named one of 10 to the 2022 Lisa Leslie Award watch list, announced by the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame and the Women's Basketball Coaches Association.

Named after the three-time All-American,1994 National Player of the Year and Class of 2015 Hall of Famer, the annual award in its fifth year recognizes the top centers in women's NCAA Division I college basketball. A national committee of top college basketball personnel determined the watch list of 20 candidates in November, which has now been narrowed to 10.

Holmes is Indiana's leading scorer this season, averaging 17.9 points, 8.2 rebounds, 1.9 blocks and shooting 61.5 percent from the floor in 14 games. The Gorham, Maine native leads the way with three double-doubles this season and has 3-point range to her game by shooting 45.5 percent on the season.

She was named a preseason All-Big Ten selection, The Athletic Preseason All-American honorable mention, Wade Trophy midseason watch list and Wooden Award midseason top 25 honoree. She has been sidelined for Indiana's last six games with a knee injury.

College basketball fans are encouraged to participate in Fan Voting presented by Dell Technologies in each of the three rounds. In late February, the watch list of 10 players for the 2022 Lisa Leslie Center of the Year Award will be narrowed to five. In March those finalists will be presented to Ms. Leslie and the Hall of Fame's selection committee where a winner will be selected.
