Thanks for sharing!  The article mentions being watched by McCarty at U of E.  Blake was also offered by U of E.  I think Coach Hawkins said it right when saying he is "just starting to scratch the surface" as far as talent.  Great opening round Sectional game!  Oh, and like Leal and Brown, Blake also bleeds Cream & Crimson!  Get him Archie!

Heritage Hills season is over.

The sectional opening game between Class 3A No. 4 Heritage Hills and Evansville Bosse was arguably one of the premier matchups across the state of Indiana on Tuesday evening.

With a packed crowd full of fans from both sides, thrilling plays from start to finish and impressive individual performances, the game didn’t disappoint.

However, this game will leave a disappointing taste in the mouths of the Patriots for a little while as they were defeated 66-62 by the Bulldogs.

Down by as many six points in the fourth quarter, Heritage Hills had several chances to take advantage of missed free throws down the final stretch. But second chance opportunities on offensive rebounds from the Bulldogs gave Bosse a second life and kept the Patriots at bay.

“You can’t allow them to get three offensive rebounds on free throws, you have to do everything you can to get that rebound,” Heritage Hills head coach Nate Hawkins said. “You give someone three chances at the line and sooner or later, they’re going to hit them. We knew that rebounding could be a factor because (Bosse) crashes the boards relentlessly.”

The game was a constant battle throughout all four quarters as neither team ever got up to a lead bigger than six points. Bosse struck first as they jumped out to a 6-0 advantage thanks to a three-pointer from Ty’Ran Funches and a dunk by Javen Layne on a fastbreak.

The Patriots went on a 5-0 run to tie things up later on courtesy of shots from Blake Sisley and Murray Becher. The Patriots took their first lead of the game at the 1:10 mark as Becher got a three-pointer to fall. The Pats led 15-14 at the end of one.

Bosse went on a 5-0 run early in the second quarter to take a 22-19 lead after buckets from Donovan McNeal and Kolten Sanford but the Patriots once again responded to close the gap to 25-22 at the halftime break.

“We knew they were going to come out fast,” said Heritage Hills junior guard Simon Scherry. “We just had to do what we could to control it for the most part.”

The intensity levels started to rise in the second half as each shot started to become more and more important. The Patriots and Bulldogs exchanged leads several times throughout the quarter as Becher continued to get shots to fall for the Patriots while McNeal, Funches and big man Kiyron Powell got things going for the Bulldogs.

Another player that started to catch fire big time for Bosse in the second half was Sanford. After he was held to just two points in the first half, he went off for 14 points in the final two quarters.

“When Sanford hit the first one, I was a little concerned because he’s a guy I’ve seen enough times to know that when he gets going it’s tough — no matter how tight Simon (Scherry) is guarding him,” Hawkins said. “Every time we made a big play, what did they do? They made a big play themselves. It was back-and-forth all the way until end.”

While the Patriots trailed 43-41 entering the fourth quarter, it was clear this game was anyone’s for the taking.

As Hawkins mentioned earlier, whenever the Patriots were able to make a big shot the Bulldogs seemed to answer almost immediately.

The Patriots implemented a strategy to intentionally foul Funches (a 55 percent shooter from the free-throw line) late in the game to try and take the lead. While Funches missed his first three attempts, the Bulldogs grabbed key offensive rebounds to maintain a possession and not allow Heritage Hills to take the lead.

Heritage Hills fans react to a call during Tuesday's Class 3A boys basketball sectional opener in Boonville. Fans from both Bosse and Heritage Hills packed Boonville's gymnasium on Tuesday evening for arguably one of the state's best opening night sectional matchups — it didn't disappoint. For more photos from the game, click here.

Big three-pointers late from Becher and Scherry made the game interesting but a pair of free throws from Sanford sealed the deal.

Murray Becher led the Patriots with 22 points while Simon Scherry added 19 and Dylan Begle finished with 10. Donovan McNeal and Kolten Sanford both finished with 16 for Bosse while Ty’Ran Funches added 15 and Kiyron Powell added eight points.

“This was a great basketball game between two really high-level basketball teams,” Hawkins said. “We’re disappointed with losing here in the sectional but at the same token, I’m very proud of this team and what they were able to accomplish.”

However, there’s no denying that this loss will sting for awhile.

“We’ll remember that we were 0-1 in the postseason — that’s what really matters,” said Scherry, reflecting on the season. “We’re going to have to come out all year and prepare for games like this.”

Tough loss but great season for the Patriots (22-2).  Bosse is very athletic at every position and will be a tough match-up for anyone in 3A again this postseason.  The Patriots return their three leading scorers next season and this one will be the reminder they need to raise the bar for workouts this off season.   Great Sectional crowd and atmosphere last night!

In high school hoops, the Heritage Hills boys are one of the more talented teams in the area. The Patriots sport one of the best big men in southwest Indiana, in junior Blake Sisley, and in the last couple years, Nate Hawkins’ teams, have won 42 games!

Tonight, the Pats were in town, taking on a Central squad, who is not to be overlooked. The Bears get out to a 5-point lead, as Henry Brown drives in and connects on the runner in the lane. Heritage Hills comes back, though. Simon Scherry, he’s dangerous from distance, and he buries it. Then, Scherry steals the inbound pass, saves it to Murray Becher, and Becher lays it in! Great hustle play, and it’s just a 2-point game. Central answers though: Andrew Windle cleans up the miss here. Later, the Patriots would take the lead, as Cayden Kratzer leaves it for Blake Sisley, who lays it in, and Heritage Hills blows it open in the 2nd half, winning 89-59.

Sisley led Heritage Hills with 23 points. Becher had 21, while Scherry added 18. Cole Sigler also chipped in 14 tallies for the Patriots. Cameron Banks led Central, with 17 points.

Courier and Presss -

EVANSVILLE – Although both sides downplayed the significance of a basketball game played so early in the season, the message Heritage Hills delivered reverberated across the Class 3A soundstage on Tuesday night.

Bounced 66-62 by Bosse last season in the 3A Boonville Sectional opener, the No. 2 Patriots rolled to a convincing 82-68 victory over the No. 4 Bulldogs in the final game of the United Bank River City Showcase at USI's Screaming Eagles Arena.

"You flip the page because it's a new season," said Simon Scherry, who scored a game-high 27 points. "But it was in the back of our minds a little bit."

Bosse flashed its superior quickness early, but it didn’t last long. Scherry converted a pair of quick buckets, then added a 3-pointer – and just like that – Heritage Hills led 27-12 with 6:37 remaining in the second period.

"It was really necessary," Scherry said. "We needed to get going, somehow, someway."

Bosse coach Shane Burkhart says the only thing that truly matters is how well you’re playing late late in the season. Well, he has a long time to get prepared for another possible matchup with the Patriots (2-0), who seem to have a little bit of everything. Do-everything guard Scherry. Blake Sisley, a 6-foot-9 junior who is being recruited by the University of Evansville, among others, working inside and out. Lots of talented role players and 3-point shooters.

Just as impressively, Heritage Hills dominated Bosse without Murray Becher, who injured his wrist in the Patriots' 89-59 win over Central last Saturday.

"Murray had a banged-up wrist and Simon and Cole (Sigler) showed tremendous leadership," said Heritage Hills coach Nate Hawkins. "Bosse is a great team, but we executed. After the initial three or four minutes, I'm really proud of the way we played."

Becher, a 6-4 senior guard, was Heritage Hills' leading scorer on last season's 22-2 team with a 20.4 average.

Maybe Heritage Hills will make it to state in basketball and football in the same season? But as the late, great college football broadcaster Keith Jackson might say, “Whoa, Nellie!”

We’ve got a million games left until tournament time. But the Patriots were pretty darn impressive.

"Right now, you can crown them sectional champions, the way they played," said Bosse coach Shane Burkhart, trying to create a little pressure.

He said the Bulldogs were out of position on defense and out of control on offense - not a good combination.

"We have to get that fixed," Burkhart said. "My hat's off to them."

Asked about another possible sectional battle with the Bulldogs down the road, Scherry said: "We've got to be ready to go again."

Julian Norris paced Bosse (1-1) with 17 points. Kolton Sanford added 16, 14 in the second half.

"I hope it burns," Burkhart said, referring to his team getting dominated in virtually every facet. "It's a situation where I hope they think about it for a long time. They played harder and with more composure."

Heritage Hills also benefited from Bosse's 6-10 center Kiyron Powell being hampered by foul trouble in the first half.

"He's a big body," Scherry said. "It was huge to get him out of there."

Powell had no points and three rebounds in the first half as the Patriots surged to a 43-26 advantage. He finished with 13 points and eight rebounds.

Hawkins noted that instead of shooting fadeaways against Powell like last year, Sisley went right at him.

"Blake attacked him," Hawkins said. "That shows his maturation. We did a lot of good things tonight, but we have only scratched the surface. We have to continue to get better through the course of the season."
