I went to Illinois Loyalty for some amusing reading. A thread on rivalries caught my eye. Many say IU is one of their biggest. A lot of Illinois fans in my area say the same thing. I usually tell them that except for IU fans who grew up in Illinois they don't even stiff the top 3. What are your thoughts?

I think a lot of that stems from the Eric Gordon saga and I think UI fans are still bitter about it. Don’t think you guys are really rivals. Just was a short-term thing due to Gordon.

Growing up in SoIN, I always thought of puke as our 1-3 biggest rival. I never really got the pu rivalry until I went to IU. It still feels a bit different as they're only thoughts are about IU.

I think with CAM running the show we'll see a renewed rivalry with pu and MSU. We'll be going after similar recruits as MSU. pu will be getting the instate leftovers.

Regional rivalries over the years have been Ill, O$U, MSU, and UM.

Same. UK is my only rival for IU in basketball. Football yeah it's Purdue because we unfortunately no longer play UK.

Lot of bad blood between Knight and Henson. Knight called Henson out for cheating and Henson referred to Knight as " a big bully."  Coach Knight had a shouting match with Henson's wife after the game that had Nick Anderson hit the game winner against us. It was senior day and Knight made reference to our opponent breaking NCAA rules and Mrs. Henson took offense. She was escorted out.

Why don’t you believe it’s UK and Purdue? I feel like IU/Purdue is a rivalry in every sport they play hence the governor’s cup.

I live a lot closer to Kentucky than I do Purdue. Way more UK fans than Purdue down here.

I feel like pu tries to push the rivalry too much. The "IU sucks" chants when pu is playing directional U just screams obsessed little brother.

Hopefully, playing twice in basketball each year with good teams should help the rivalry. Playing only once a year and each side having bad years in the recent past hasn't helped.

I also look for CAM to bring back the game against puke. I feel sorry for pu favs but I hate everything puke represents, sans winning.

Agreed. Also not a fan of the ND football/IU basketball folks. I know plenty of ND football fans that don’t care at all about ND basketball. 


I don’t like fans like that either. You either root for your school or you don’t. Picking and choosing sports at different schools just doesn’t sit right with me.
