Tyra Buss Invited To USA Basketball Women’s U23 Team Training Camp

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.  – Indiana Women's Basketball junior guard Tyra Buss has been invited as one of 40 athletes to USA Basketball Women's U23 Team Training Camp, announced by the organization on Tuesday. The invitations were issued by the USA Basketball Women's Junior National Team Committee.

Buss will take part in the tryouts in Colorado Springs July 31-Aug. 4 at the U.S. Olympic Training Center. Those selected to the U23 team will compete in the inaugural Four Nations Tournament for college-aged women Aug. 12-15 in Tokyo, Japan. Teams included will be Australia, Canada, Japan and the USA and will be a round-robin style tournament. To be eligible for the women's U23 team, players must be a U.S. citizen, 23 years old or younger and currently freshmen, sophomores or juniors in college.
 
"I am grateful and humbled for the opportunity to be selected for USA Basketball Women's U23 team trials," Buss said. "This is an opportunity of a lifetime to compete with some of the best collegiate players in the country and will be a valuable experience for my continued development as I prepare for my senior year at Indiana."
 
During training camp, athletes will take part in sessions dedicated to skill development and to understanding the culture of success that is an important aspect of playing for the USA Basketball Women's National Team. Additionally, the participants will be divided into four teams that will compete in a round-robin tournament that results in semifinals and gold and bronze medal games.
 
Training camp begins on July 31 with a session at 5:45 p.m. (all times listed are MDT). On Aug. 1, training camp will continue at 9 a.m. and 3 p.m., while Team 1 will play Team 2 at 4:30 p.m. and Team 3 will take on Team 4 at 6 p.m. Aug. 2 will begin with Team 1 versus Team 3 at 9:30 a.m. and Team 2 against Team 4 at 11 a.m., and after a training camp session at 3 p.m., Team 1 will play Team 4 at 5 p.m. and Team 2 will meet Team 3 at 6:30 p.m. On Aug. 3, the day will start with semifinal games at 8 a.m. and 9:30 a.m., followed by a training camp session at 12:30 p.m. and then one-hour team practices for each of the teams from 4-8 p.m. The final day of training camp on Aug. 4 will feature a bronze medal game at 8 a.m., a gold medal game at 9:30 a.m. and the official USA U23 National Team expected to be announced early that afternoon.
 
Leading the 2017 USA Basketball Women's U23 National Team will be Jeff Walz (Louisville) as head coach, with Courtney Banghart (Princeton) and Michelle Clark-Heard (Western Kentucky) as assistant coaches. Additionally, Geno Auriemma, 2009-16 USA Basketball Women's National Team head coach and head coach at the University of Connecticut, will serve as the lead clinician during training camp, guiding all of the sessions except the team practices and games.
 
The Mt. Carmel, Ill. native is WBCA All-American honorable mention and back-to-back All-Big Ten First team selection in 2016-17. She averaged 18.4 points, 4.7 assists, 2.4 steals and 3.2 rebounds per game as she has helped guide Indiana to a single season record of 23 wins and a WNIT quarterfinal appearance. She has scored in double figures in 32 of 34 games this season, setting a new career-high 38 points against North Carolina State, which ranks as tied for the fourth-most in a single game. She scored 35 points in a win over Florida and also scored 20 or more points in a game nine times this season. In addition, Buss became the first player in school history to record back-to-back 600 point seasons as she tallied 619 points and sits with 1,601 career points and is on pace to break the all-time scoring record.
 
She also notched two double-doubles and set new career-highs in assists, steals, 3-pointers made and free throws made. Currently, Buss ranks eighth in all-time scoring (1,601), second in free throws made (453), tied for third in assists (400) fourth in free throw attempts (594) and fifth in steals (216). She became the fastest player to score 1,000 points last season and set a new school record with 59 consecutive games in double figure scoring. In addition, she was a Naismith Preseason Top 50 watch list candidate and was one of 35 players eligible for the Wade Trophy. Buss was also named to the Big Ten Player of the Week Honor Roll.
