IU Baseball Offseason Updates

Recommended Posts

Westminster, Maryland, native Isaiah Pasteur, who started 70 games in his freshman and sophomore seasons in Bloomington has left the university. While Pasteur was a mainstay in the Indiana lineup for two full seasons, he provided little production his sophomore season, hitting just .192 with 14 RBIs and no home runs, all significant decreases from his freshman numbers.

While no official word has been given as to why Pasteur has left the program, and transferred to George Washington, it is easy (and probably not wrong) to speculate that the combination of Pasteur’s limited production and the arrival of standout SS Jeremy Houston (who sources close to the program say Lemonis is wild about, and who Fall ball showed to be a rare Big Ten talent) amounted to writing on the wall that Pasteur would be squeezed out by a roster that will demand the following players get significant playing time: Houston, Alex Krupa, Tony Butler, Austin Cangelosi, Ryan Fineman, Logan Sowers, Craig Dedelow, and Luke Miller. In addition to those players, Chris Lowe, Scotty Bradley, and Laren Eustace, along with other newcomers, such as Jake Matheny, will challenge for playing time. Simply put, it’s not difficult to see that there probably wasn’t room for Pasteur in the 2017 lineup.

Two offseasons ago, Indiana’s Logan Sowers was one of the most anticipated arrivals in the Big Ten. The physical, athletic outfielder from Lafayette, Indiana, showed the promise of immediately being able to step into a starting role in the Hoosiers’ outfield and looked more than capable of providing some serious punch in the middle of the order.

As a freshman in 2015, he certainly showed flashes of that, even if he wasn’t quite a sensation from day one in Bloomington. He hit .257/.329/.427 with 15 doubles, six homers, and 36 RBI. That performance in his debut season was enough to earn him All-Big Ten Freshman Team honors and excite the Indiana faithful about what the future might hold for the precocious outfielder.

His sophomore season, though, didn’t go as smoothly as he or the team would have hoped. Although he still ended up playing in, and starting, 44 games on the season, he battled a shoulder injury that slowed him down and forced him to miss time. But that’s not to say that there weren’t encouraging signs, because there absolutely were.

At .273/.377/.466, he saw in increase in all three of his slash line figures, and even though he played in 15 fewer games than the season before, he increased his home run total from six to eight, flashing more of that power that he showcased in winning the Cape Cod League home run derby in 2015 and increased his walk total from 21 to 22, perhaps hinting that he’s developing into a disciplined hitter as much as a powerful one. To that end, he also reduced his strikeout total from 67 as a freshman to just 36 a season ago. Sure, he played in fewer games, but that’s a significant drop-off caused by more than just a reduction in at-bats.

Those positive signs suggest that 2017, if Sowers can stay healthy, could be a big year. In our podcast with Michael Hughes, who covered the team for the Daily Student prior to graduating from Indiana, he suggested that Sowers’ potential breakout is certainly a storyline to watch with the Hoosiers in the upcoming season.

There are some question marks surrounding the Hoosiers heading into 2017, most notably when it comes to who is going to step into the starting rotation, what with all three of their weekend starters finishing their careers after last season. But where there won’t be questions is in the middle of the order with Craig Dedelow, who spurned pro ball to return for one more season in Bloomington, and Sowers, a massive talent perhaps poised to become one of the most feared hitters in not only the Big Ten, but the entire country.

Butler and Stephenson named 2017 Baseball Captains.

http://iuhoosiers.com/news/2016/12/12/butler-and-stephenson-named-2017-baseball-captains.aspx?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=twitter

"I am excited to announce Tony and Luke as our captains for the 2017 season," said Lemonis. "The team voted them to be our captains based on their day-to-day performance in our program. They are very talented baseball players, but more importantly, men of high character who have a strong influence on our team. They both have overcome many obstacles to get to this point in their careers.  I am looking forward to them leading our team this spring."

Butler became the first Hoosier to be named to the 2016 Rawlings Gold Glove Team. The second baseman did not make an entire error the 2016 season, recording 77 putouts and 126 assists (203 chances). He played in 47 games for IU in 2016, making 44 starts while collecting 33 hits on the year, including four doubles and three home runs to go along with 13 RBI. In the rubber game of a three-game set against Indiana State on March 27, he belted a two-run walk-off home run in the ninth inning to give IU a 5-3 win.

Stephenson appeared in 14 games in 2016, making five starts in midweek games. He struck out 17 batters in 30 innings of work while walking just five. In his first career start as a Hoosier against Seton Hall, he struck out four in three innings. His first career victory came at Xavier on April 20, as he tossed four innings of shutout ball. Stephenson was strong in relief against Kentucky, striking out three and not allowing a baserunner in 2.2 innings.

Nor did he make any partial errors last season.

This list tells me Luke Miller plans to be back even if drafted and same with Milto (who is also 21 already and eligible). Since no juniors are on it besides Kade Kryzsko hard to get a read on Sowers. Not sure on Lloyd either who is 3 yrs removed form High School after spending time at JUCO. Also Jake Matheny only freshman or sophomore not on it.

Sussex Cardinals 19 at Hartland Oilers 1

http://www.lakecountrynow.com/story/sports/high-school/mukwonago-chief/2017/06/12/land-olakes-june-12/389302001/

Sussex would welcome home pitcher BJ Sabol, who returns after his season at Indiana was complete. However, to the surprise to many, Sabol would be the star of the game not because of his arm but his bat.  Sabol would have 3 hits and a walk, including a home run, triple, and a double.

I could not be happier for Dedelow but not sure it sets a great precedent.

He basically is a natural contact hitter who tried to hard swinging for fences each time this year and as result his average dipped about 75 points and his home runs went from about 5 to 20 (and this change in approach was clearly intentional). Basically tells kids as long as you swing for fences every time and hit lots of home runs we don't care if rest of your game suffers. Don't like that message but good for him and glad it worked out.

Twins Round 31 pick: Luke Miller, 3B, Indiana (College Sophomore).

And in a related IU Baseball note.  In the 35th round of the MLB Draft, the Chicago White Sox have drafted Bloomington North RHP Riley Crean.

And we have a correction to the Riley Crean news.

Just spoke with Riley Crean. He will not attend Indiana to play baseball next year. Crean will go to IMG for postgrad year.

Sowers and Lloyd not drafted so all of the sudden next year looks much brighter for us with them coming back.

However, the negative with that as I keep saying is player development is lacking. How Sowers was drafted out of high school and has not progressed since coming here is a mystery. Throw in Krupa who I believe was drafted out of High School and now was not and it could get harder to sell players on coming here. Also Fineman has all the tools and is not developing at all.

With that said short term we are in great shape after the draft and recruiting continues to be top notch. However, some of these top players are going to have to develop eventually to keep landing them.

Program is not sunshine and roses but its not gloom and doom either. Kind of in a holding pattern and could go either way in next few years with some good and some bad happening currently.
