IU Baseball Offseason Updates

Recommended Posts

battle for friday starter between hobbie, stiever and milto.  all had great summers.  despite losing kesler and our entire weekend rotation, maybe the pitching wont be as much a concern as we anticipated.  sabol and belcher return after great years; stephenson is a solid returning veteran; inexperienced guys like sedat, herrin, foote look to break through; and several good pitching prospects come in.

i just looked at perfect game's commit list for the first time in a while.  12 of 13 commits in 2017 are from indiana, and 6 of 7 in 2018 are from indiana.  safe to say lemo and staff have prioritized getting the top hoosier players.  the two in those classes not from indiana are from wisconsin and michigan, and the lone commit in 2019 looks to be an elite prospect (says he received interest from louisville, vanderbilt, mississippi, texas a&m, tcu) from missouri.  13 of 14 commits in 2016, counting szynski and suwinski who signed pro deals, are from the midwest too.

the team for the foreseeable future will have a very strong hoosier and midwestern pride.

TOP 10 PROSPECTS
1. Brian Hobbie, rhp, Terre Haute (Indiana/JR in 2017)
Hobbie collected Pitcher of the Year honers in the Prospect League in 2016, after an outstanding summer that saw him go 4-2 for the Rex with a league-best 0.82 ERA in 54 2/3 innings pitched. Collectively, coaches and scouts around the league mentioned Hobbie the most when talking about best command, and that is further evidenced by his mere 11 walks in those 54 2/3 innings. His best off-speed pitch at present is the changeup, thrown in the mid- to upper-70s with late, fading action and excellent deception out of the hand due to his arm speed and intent. His fastball will usually work in the 88-92 mph range, clocking up to 93-94 at times, with heavy sinking life and arm-side bore. The slider is the third pitch in the starter’s repertoire right now, but will still show as an average pitch once in awhile, and is mostly thrown in the upper-70s as a get-me-over strike, but he has shown the ability to tighten/sharpen it up into the low-80s and use it as a put-away pitch against righthanded hitters. He’s likely to be counted on more and more heavily in Bloomington in 2017, as the Hoosiers have seen several 2016 contributors leave via the draft and/or graduation, and Hobbie has a chance to establish himself on MLB Draft boards.

D1 Baseball Fall Report.

Every now and then, a program unexpectedly makes a huge splash on the national scene, riding a special group of veteran players to a super regional or Omaha, then fading back into the pack just as quickly. It’s one thing to catch lightning in a bottle; it’s another thing to sustain consistent success. In the case of Indiana, which made just its third regional in program history in 2013 on the way to the College World Series and then followed it up with a national seed the following year, the question was this: What would the Hoosiers do without Kyle Schwarber and Sam Travis and Joey DeNato and Dustin DeMuth — and coach Tracy Smith, who left for Arizona State after that 2014 season?

So far, coach Chris Lemonis has shown that Indiana can keep on winning without that special core. The Hoosiers made it back to regionals for a third straight year in 2015, and they nearly made it four in a row last year before getting cold in the final two weeks, losing six of their last seven games. Even so, they finished 15-9 in the Big Ten, tied for third place, just outside NCAA tournament position.

It looks like the Hoosiers are built to get back to regionals in 2017 thanks to a veteran, talented core of position players — but much depends on how well the overhauled pitching staff performs.

Love this. Really would love to see the continued success of these guys. Can we be a basketball/football/baseball school?!?!?

Soccer?  Our most successful team sport

He had that covered... football!  We lost last week so obviously we're not an American football school this week!

Alot of the rookies got some work in on the bump today. Next games will be announced early next week.

@HoosierBaseball: Andrew Salfrank, Cal Krueger, Jack Eagan, Austin Foote and Cam Beauchamp have combined allowing only four hits through 7 innings.
