The geography is the best after Louisville but this gives us almost no chance to win. As I have said, as much as Louisville is excellent they are one of the weaker one seeds and give us the best chance to advance of the 16 teams hosting.

Last year they didn't care too much about geography and slotted us in Austin, TX. I would certainly welcome going to Okie St. Nebraska and Illini with more favorable draws than us in this projection but we know its merely that.

They sent us to Texas last year because their were no close Regional's. Neither Louisville or Nashville hosted and the closest Regional was either Georgia or Arkansas so we got no Regional preference as a result. Tennessee also has a chance to host for another closer spot as does West Virginia this year.

With Louisville or Nashville in play this year, the chances of going there are reasonably high. I think we would get Louisville over Illinois despite what the bracket shows with them going to Nashville. The thing we need to hope for is Illinois St and Indiana St to get 3 seeds, as Mid Majors get preference due to budgetary reasons, so if they get the two seeds in Louisville and Nashville that sends IU and/or Illinois farther (probably somewhere further south although could be anywhere). If those two teams fall to three seeds, it is almost certain ourselves and Illinois will get Louisville and Nashville with Illinois and Indiana State as the three seeds there as no one else would need preference in those regions.

Thanks for laying that out. We should get the better location that Illinois unless something happens otherwise in BIG tourney. Also, have Nebraska in the mix as well although it would seem they would get a less preferential location as well.

Nebraska would slot into Oklahoma St. or Arkansas which they are closest to. Michigan would get no preference because they are not close enough to any of the Regionals to warrant one much like us last year (hence why we got Texas last year as a leftover spot when everyone else slotted in).

So basically this is solely based on geography rather than for example, pitting the best 1 seed against the worst 2 seed.  Does strength within seed come into play at all?

Correct. Solely geography. Strength within seed doesn't matter.

If you are ranked 17-32 in RPI you are a two seed and they will pair you Regionally with the closest one seed if one is close by. If there is another two seed nearby (I.E. Illinois) that needs same Region then you may get next closest (if there are to many teams in same region or no close by one seed, you get randomly placed after everyone else). Its the same formula for three seeds

Illinois still has a chance to host and we should root for that if we don't win Big Ten tourney, as that takes away a nearby two seed and also provides a landing spot for Indiana St or Illinois St guaranteeing us Nashville or Louisville no matter what (we can't go to Illinois as conference foe). I believe it is closest (Louisville), next closest (Nashville), random(or just random if you are not within five hours of two Regional sites as we were last year hence the random placement in Texas)

If IU, ISU, Illinois St and Illinois are all two seeds then the two mid majors most likely get Louisville and Nashville due to mid majors getting priority due to budget constraints and us and Illini get randomly sent. If the two mid majors get three seeds and they are right on border of two and three seed, then Illinois gets Louisville or Nashville and we get the other with the two mid majors the three's there. If one of the Mid Majors is a two and us and Illinois compete for one of the other two's, then it will be at the discretion of the committee to place one of us in UL or Vandy while sending the other randomly.

That formula is what is used but is not perfect so it will follow very closely to that but could vary somewhat. In other words if we want Louisville for sure, root for Illinois to host and the Mid Majors to be a three and we lock into Louisville with no other Regional teams needing the Louisville two seed. If anything else happens as described above it could be Louisville, Nashville or further out depending on what happens and its at the committees discretion if all things are equal (I.E. Placing us or Illinois in Louisville or Nashville).
