And yet another fundraising coup for our AD.

Anonymous Gift to “For All: The Indiana University Bicentennial Campaign” to Establish Dr. Lawrence D. Rink Center for Sports Medicine and Technology

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. –  Indiana University Vice-President and Director of Athletics Fred Glass announced today a major anonymous gift to the "For All: The Indiana University Bicentennial Campaign" in support of IU Athletics.  At the request of the anonymous donor, their gift will be recognized through the naming of the Dr. Lawrence D. Rink Center for Sports Medicine and Technology.  The new center is part of the IU Excellence Academy being constructed in the south end of Memorial Stadium.

As part of the Excellence Academy, The Dr. Lawrence D. Rink Center for Sports Medicine and Technology will be home to the Irsay Family Wellness Clinic, the Center for Elite Athlete Development as well as the Rehabilitation and Treatment Center.  These facilities will provide: comprehensive physical and mental healthcare for IU student-athletes with physician offices, psychologist and nutritionist offices, exam rooms, diagnostic equipment, and the like; all-inclusive space and equipment to help prevent, diagnose, rehabilitate and treat injuries to student-athletes; and research and technology to apply science to the development of champion student-athletes.

"We are so grateful for this generous gift that will establish the Dr. Lawrence Rink Center for Sports Medicine and Technology," Glass said.  "Dr. Rink has been a leader not only for IU Athletics, but globally, in providing the best medical care to athletes. With this center being located at the front door of the IU Athletics campus, it will provide our students with timely, comprehensive, high quality health care and related support just steps away from the competitive field."

Dr. Larry Rink just wrapped up his 37th year as team physician for the Indiana men's basketball program.  Rink practices cardiology and sports medicine in Bloomington.  He graduated from the Indiana University School of Medicine and completed his internal medicine residency and cardiovascular fellowship at IU.  Rink currently is a clinical professor of medicine with the IU School of Medicine.

"I am tremendously grateful for this generous gift being given in my honor to a place that means so much to me.  It has been a pleasure to be a part of IU Athletics for nearly four decades.  This new center located within the IU Excellence Academy will continue to ensure that Indiana University is a leader in providing the best possible medical care for our dedicated student athletes.  Also, the Center will allow Indiana University Athletic Department to provide much needed research, utilize cutting edge technology, and improve education in sports medicine.  Our goal is to bridge the gap between basic science, research and the elite athlete.  We will develop champions."

Rink has worked with world-wide organizations and events including the Pan American Games, U.S. Olympic Trials, Olympic Sports Festivals, World University Games and was selected as the United States Team Physician for the Summer Olympic games in Barcelona, Spain in 1992.  He now serves as the President of the International University Sports Federation Medical Commission headquartered in Lausanne, Switzerland.  The Commission manages medical care and doping control for all international university sport competitions.

Rink also serves as the Medical Director for the IU Sports Medicine Program in Bloomington.  He is a founding member of Internal Medicine Associates, a multi-special medical group, and served as Chairman of the Board of Directors of Premier Healthcare. Dr.  Rink has received many local, National and International Awards and in 1999 was presented the Distinguished Alumni Award from the IU Alumni Association.

The Excellence Academy program is one of the most innovative and effective personal development programs in all of intercollegiate athletics.  It focuses on the holistic development of the entire person to provide students an exceptional college experience in addition to athletics that will prepare them for an outstanding life experience after athletics.  The Excellence Academy complements IU's world class academic support and athletic performance services to provide comprehensive personal development programs in four major areas to help prepare young men and women for great lives and success after college: leadership and life skills; health and wellness; service learning; and career development.  The Excellence Academy helps to teach students how to impact lives, starting with their own, and change the world.

On Friday, the University will conduct the formal groundbreaking on the Excellence Academy building which will provide a home for and thereby enhance the Excellence Academy program.  The Excellence Academy is a $53 million, 66,575 square foot facility which will close in the south end zone of Memorial Stadium and create a bold new "front door" to campus for Memorial Stadium and more generally the Athletics campus.  The Excellence Academy will open in the summer of 2018.
