Indiana Adds Muse to 2017 Recruiting Class

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana University head men's soccer coach Todd Yeagley announced the addition of Trey Muse to the program's 2017 recruiting class.

Muse joins a highly-touted 2017 group for the Hoosiers that was ranked the fourth-best recruiting class in the nation by Top Drawer Soccer. Along with Muse, the class includes John Bannec, Kyle Barks, Griffin Dorsey, Jacob Gruber, Jacob Meier, Justin Rennicks, Joe Schmidt, Mason Toye and Thomas Warr.

"We are very excited to have Trey join our soccer program," coach Yeagley remarked. "He has been a standout with the U-18 National Team establishing himself as one of the top goalkeepers in his age group.  Trey has also had the opportunity to train with the Seattle Sounders first-team while playing for the U-18 the Sounders Academy squad. Trey is long and athletic with very good distribution. Trey completes a very special recruiting class."

The 10-member class will join a talented Indiana squad that posted a record of 12-2-7, ending the season ranked No. 9 in the country in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America poll.

IU reached the NCAA Tournament for the 30th-straight season in 2016 and for the 41st overall time in program history. The Hoosiers earned a national seed for the 12th time in the last 14 years, beating Akron before falling to Virginia Tech in the NCAA Tournament Round of 16.

A complete bio for Muse can be found below, as well as a video of coach Yeagley discussing the Louisville, Ky. native.

Nice piece from Daniel Karell at the Louisville Courier-Journal on Trey Muse.

Louisville native Trey Muse earns rave reviews following US U-18 appearance

Trey Muse isn’t your typical goalkeeper.

The Louisville native, who is a member of the U.S. Under-18 Men’s National Team and recently committed to play at Indiana University, was always destined to be a goalkeeper. At 6-foot-4 and 195 pounds with long arms and quick reactions, Muse has all the physical tools professional teams drool over.

His father, David Muse, who is a former goalkeeper and won the Kentucky Boys Soccer Gatorade Player of the Year award in 1992-93 before starring at the University of Kentucky, wanted to give his son the best chance of making a professional career for himself.

So he barred Trey from playing in goal.

From a young age, Trey Muse learned his craft in soccer as a field player, picking up the crucial skills of controlling the ball to pass, shoot and dribble. Once he was 12 years old, David Muse let him move into the net.

“That’s one of the biggest things as a goalkeeper to have,” Trey Muse said of having good control of the ball. “I think that’s very helpful and that allows me to fit into a lot of systems in the goalkeeping position because I’m almost like the 11th field player because they can play through me. It’s very helpful as well with the national team because they want goalkeepers with good feet.”

Like so many other cases of misjudging talent and potential, Trey Muse was cut from the U.S. Soccer Region 2 Olympic Development Program team at 13. Months later, after Derby City Rovers Technical Director and coach Nathan Pitcock recommended Trey Muse participate in a national identification program, he was picked up by then-U.S. Under-14 coach Hugo Perez, known in soccer circles for his eye for talent as well as developing young players.

“I knew those (Region 2) coaches and reached out and asked for some feedback,” Pitcock said. “They were very focused on the things Trey couldn’t do. And I said of course but look at what he can do. The things he can’t do we can fix, and the things he can, there’s few players that can do that. If we’re talking about talent identification and not just roster selection, there was no doubt Trey belonged at a very high level.”

As Trey Muse’s stock began to rise, it was clear that playing his club soccer in the Rovers academy and for Male High School wasn’t enough of a test. A pair of opportunities came up to join Major League Soccer academies, and the Muse family chose the Seattle Sounders, with Trey Muse relocating to Tukwila, Washington, at 16, shortly into his junior year of high school.

With the Sounders, Trey Muse was able to train with and play against other top prospects in the U.S. Soccer Development Academy system as well as at times train or mingle with first-team players playing in the MLS.

“Yeah, it’s a good experience,” he said. “Getting to be more consistent in training is really good and it helps me as a player. I really get pushed in first- and second-team training and it helps me to develop my overall player as well because of all the really good players they have in Seattle.”

After some time out of the U.S. Soccer system, Trey Muse returned when U.S. Under-18 Men’s National Team coach Omid Namazi brought Trey Muse into a training camp last January. Namazi, a former goalkeeper himself, liked what he saw and brought Trey Muse over to Europe for the 2017 Slovakia Cup, where the U.S. finished runners-up, losing to Russia on penalty kicks.

Trey Muse started one game, a 2-1 victory over Belarus, and earned rave reviews after the tournament from Namazi.

“I thought the game he played in goal versus Belarus, he looked the sure thing,” Namazi said, adding that Muse is at the top of the U.S. U-18 goalkeeping depth chart. “I think he’s got great upside. He’s a good-sized kid, he’s very athletic and a good shot stopper.

“In order to make it to the next level he’ll have to be more vocal and improve his play with his feet but the ceiling for him is unlimited, he can really get to the highest level if he works at his game. He’s got all the tools and I feel like he’s a goalkeeper for the future.”

This spring, Trey Muse entertained the possibility of moving to Europe before deciding on attending Indiana, choosing the Hoosiers over Kentucky. At Indiana, Trey Muse joins a pair of his U.S. U-18 teammates, forwards Justin Rennicks and Griffin Dorsey, giving the Hoosiers a top-five recruiting class this fall.

“I would have loved to see him at Kentucky, but Indiana has a shot to win it all next year,” Dave Muse said. “It’s the best opportunity for him. He’ll go in and compete from day one, hopefully win the (position) and hopefully bring IU their ninth national title. I love seeing that (on our official visit), it’s about a ninth star and that’s their focus.”
