Was it back in the Crean era maybe that there was a saying or some shirts that said something like: “Welcome to Bloomington, a drinking town with a basketball problem”. Seems like it may be relevant again, or still.

Ruh-roh. Speaking for myself first....not at all surprised by this. Its what I was expecting to happen. I don't find it surprising at all. We essentially have an uninspiring, lame duck coach who may only be here for one more year, who has an antiquated, ineffective, and unattractive system that he seems completely unopen to changing. Other programs will easily look more attractive. I do think many others were also VERY concerned about this being the case, especially when our only real "plan" seems to be to try to get (several?) really good players from the portal for '24/'25. Still shaking my head at the utter idiocy of what our "leaders" have come up with for the future of this program. Its why I've held on to a sliver of hope that someone will see the coming portal disaster and hit "abort" before too much longer.

Care to explain what “preparing for a fielder’s choice” means or would look like? Thx

I wonder what the remaining balance is right now in the IU portal checkbook? -
NCAA MBB Coaching Carousel

I’ve wondered if the FAU players got wind of May’s departure and it affected their tournament play. -
Uhh, we already do.

Rick Pitino to Louisville? -
I found a magic lamp on the beach and rubbed it. A genie came out and told me I could go back and trade the meaningless late season winning streak for being on our way to a new coach if I wanted to. I’m just not sure what to do….mostly because I’m not sure anymore if I’m a true fan or not. Note: I understood and appreciated the different perspectives on supporting the team and the players and not rooting against them. Not intending to restart that debate. Just musing.

I guess I have college basketball on "ignore" until Woodson is gone. Maybe it's a defense mechanism to protect myself.
-
I'm having trouble drumming up enough interest now (after the 'decision' to keep Woodson) to think about enjoying the postseason, the portaling season, or next year. Pretty much totally deflated and lost all interest since the shockingly inept occurred.
-
That's a great question. IMO, they can't even evaluate the current coach properly or he would be gone already.
-
Yes, agree. This year is what I was referring to, as a super long shot, if any at all.
-
If Jerry Yeagley's post is correct, it sounds like the BoT is "only interested in a homerun hire" (and that may be a super long shot), so it would seem dreaming or speculating about coaches who don't meet that may not be worthwhile. I'm not knocking anyone's ideas, I like hearing other perspectives and thinking outside the box. Just saying, it would seem only "homerun hires" would fit he bill.

I hope reality setting in (that no one wants to play for him or in his crap system) is so bone jarring that all of his teeth fall out. Dude needs a serious reality check. Nobody wants to play for you Mike. Only the BoT and boosters think you should be the coach.

This whole “fix it in the portal” strategy seems flawed for several reasons with two of them being: - It seems to presume that talent was the problem and getting talent will fix the problem. I’m not at all convinced of that. Even if we end up with more or better talent, it may still flounder in a flawed system. -It also seems to be based on the presumption that better or more talent can actually be obtained from the portal, which I’m also not at all convinced of.
-
So, in the BoT’s “wisdom”, the chosen path to success is to try to get an incredible level of talented players who are willing to take money to play in a terrible system under a mediocre coach, then somehow overachieve and perform at an elite or championship level. Which would require Woodson to suddenly do everything he has failed to do in three years. Then, even if it were miraculously successful, it would be completely unsustainable. Or, if it’s not successful, they’ll fire him later for the same things they’ve already decided he deserves to be fired for now, they’re just not ready to do it yet. As opposed to making a change now and getting a coach who has the skills and experience to get started now, and do this in a proven and more successful way. Sounds like a great plan… what could go wrong? God help us…these people don’t know what the ______ they are doing, IMO.

Thanks for the information and the update… Much appreciated. I do have to say, though that I don’t understand this logic. If there’s a consensus that this hire has not achieved what it was meant to, and isn’t going in the right direction, and there’s real doubt and risk about not obtaining the right kind of talent in the portal, then I don’t understand the decision to continue it for another year. I think I understand the part where they think there may be a chance to make next year better than this year, but what about the chance of not doing well enough in the portal, and next year being even worse? It may have already been asked, but is there a chance that the eject button might be pushed if portaling goes too poorly, or is it year four no matter what? I think a lot of folks have a very serious concern that if recruiting/portaling doesn’t go well, this could get very bad very very quickly. Thanks again for the information and any other light you can shed.

If true, this would be an ABSOLUTE LEADERSHIP FAILURE, IMO, to choose “the way we’ve always done it” (“we always give IU coaches four years”), as opposed to appraising a unique situation against relevant situational factors. This is the stuff that gives “bureaucracies” and “boards”, and specifically, the IU Admin, such a terrible rating of performance in the eyes of many. If this kind of thing happens, I will have REAL trouble supporting almost any aspect of IU going forward, in spite of being a former donor and a two-time graduate.

This is the mode I'm in. Holding out hope that maybe, just maybe the AD or IU Admin isn't so disturbingly and infuriatingly inept or moronic as to actually keep Mick Woolson for another year. Hoping the "Yeagley" post will bring that kind of good news.
