Fire Coach Woodson + Assessment of Former Posters
DChoosier replied to Banksyrules's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
Ware and MM were great “gets” but the ROI was limited due to the backcourt. Woody didn’t get guards which turned out to be catastrophic. All the coaching issues aside there are not many programs that would have won more than 10 BT games with Cupps/Leal/Gallo/Gunn and the last season version of X on the perimeter. -

No, it’s not lost on me. Your post just happened to be one of a thousand referencing us paying guys. Is $$$ the only reason Tucker wants to play at IU? Maybe, but I don’t know that for sure. Many said that about Ware but he turned out seeming pretty dedicated to IU/winning, -

Coaching aside, and I realize that’s a huge component to put to the side,….. It’s a guards game but all of our star power was in the front court. We needed, and still need, guards. And yes, I realize it’s Woodys fault we didn’t have the guards. -

Damn, I was hoping we would land one of the 4 or 5* not interested in getting paid. Hopefully we will land some great altruistic guys from the transfer portal. -
(2024) - SF Bryson Tucker to INDIANA
DChoosier replied to Class of '66 Old Fart's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
Kansas and others would have taken him. We landed him. The alternative is still not having landed anyone. Welcome aboard Burger Boy. -
I think the chances of still landing Liam were zero prior to today. Due to landing Tucker today our chances are probably now less than zero.

Transfer Portal w IU Interest

I agree that a team of nothing but guys that only joined because it was the absolute highest bid is not optimal. These days a program has to have the NIL $$$$ to compete for players but hopefully you don’t have a team of guys that literally don’t care about anything other than who is the highest bidder. -
ESPN (just updated) has Ware 26th NBADRAFT.net has Ware 30th Not surprised (not a knock because he might make the board next year) but MM didn’t show up on either of their first 2 round picks. On a side note Edey was the EPSN 14th pick which is quite an uptick for him.

That’s interesting, but a bummer. Like I said in a previous post I just didn’t know if that was the case. I assumed there were strong “you really fill a need we have” type of comments but am not a fan of “you will definitely start if you come here”. -

Lots to like in that article. Just wish, in a perfect world, that his range extended beyond the elbow. Hopefully we can get a guy capable of opening things up (or maybe the plan is to go with a 4 in 1 out offense…LOL) -

That is what I assumed but from what I was reading I thought the implication was that we only landed high level guys by guaranteeing them a starting spot. I’ll admit my interpretation of the post might be incorrect. -

And MR was very highly ranked but only started 3 games as a freshman. Guess he didn’t get the coveted promise. -

I’m not disputing you but asking if you really know that he makes all these “I guarantee you will start” promises. By your calculation, if we land those guys, Gallo is definitely on the bench and if we also land Connell he would automatically join Gallo on the bench due to other promises ? I really hope that is not what is happening. -

I’d give them anchovy but maybe that’s just me. -

I agree that those all matter. No doubt. That being said, when a sought after portal or high school player is being pursued the coach still needs access to “the bag”. To your point it doesn’t have to be the largest bag but it better have some goodies inside. -

He is a good player so I’m going to guess he is being given a supreme from whichever pizza place he prefers. Bench guys get Dominos cheese only. -

I agree with the sentiment, and Woody certainly struck out in HS recruiting, but the way things are these days the bags of money don’t bother me as much as it does some. Let’s say he would have landed 5 high school players (he only missed that target by 5. LOL). My assumption is that all 5 of those high school players would have had their “bags” lined up. Does that make them less desirable or low character? We were excited about Liam and I’d bet everything I own that the IU bag was well over 100k. -

Thanks for the response. In regards to him entering the portal…I have no idea (and hadn’t really heard of him until a couple of hours ago LOL) but the odds of a mid-major “star” entering the portal are extremely high when their coach leaves and he has a chance to play at a P5 school. Not to mention that his NIL at ISU probably consisted of free pizza and the use of a bicycle while a P5 school will offer him 250k-500k+ or so. Based on the feedback I hope we get him -

And he is from Indy which hopefully/might help us. Hope we go at him with a 39 gallon lawn and leaf hefty bag -

I haven’t watched ISU at all. Does Conwell’s game look like it would transfer to the BT? I love the fact that he is 6’4” and from the field/3/FT he shot 49%, 42%, 86%. That would be GREAT if he could do something close to that in the BT. -

Perkins not a great shooter Tucker is a mid-range guy Thats ok IF we can also land some shooters. What in the world needs to happen for IU, in INDIANA, to get shooters? Hopefully MM comes back because at this point he is the only perimeter threat we have. Another year in the 300’s, in 3 point shooting percentage and volume, won’t cut it. Is it really that hard? -

I have no idea if Hunter Dickinson directly talked to other guys in the portal but when he transferred to Kansas he openly stated that he was making under 100k at UM and was aware of “stars” making nearly $1,000,000 and basically thought…WTF. The “briefcases” definitely, not surprisingly, have impact. -

I admittedly know very little about Kelsey but he is only 48, has been a HC for 12 years and has won his conference an impressive six of the twelve years (also has 2 seconds and 2 thirds). -

Apparently the administrations strategy is waiting for the others schools to sign all the available desirable coaches.
