I wish I could like this way more than one time. THIS IS SPOT ON. Woodson is all show and no go, as they say.
He's definitely not a team player if the stories are true - not interacting with other sports programs, refusing to talk to other teams when the coaches ask him to, his distain for Teri Moren and the women's program ... and those stories came from a source that I trust implicitly.

I don’t know what needs to happen but the political slant of all major Universities including Indiana and the not-so-subtle indoctrination therein needs a shift and a reset.
Higher education should aim to be apolitical as well, but we all know that isn’t how things have been for a long time. McRobbie opened my eyes to things, and they’ve only been opened wider since.

They don’t recruit that way.  They definitely sell starter spots and bench spots.

That’s why we weren’t able to get the guard we needed last cycle.  It’s why we recruited Peyton Sparks.  It’s why we are having a tougher time filling the last 3-4 spots.

Now if during practice one of the bench guys outplays a starter, I imagine they would switch but it’s not really Woody’s ways either.
Instead of having 10 guys that look like they could be starters and letting the cream rise to the top we recruit tiers.  Makes the margin of error in assessment so much more difficult .

But for the fact there is a method for that via the Board of Trustees, the legislature, and the Governor, ok.   This “no confidence vote” is a temper tantrum by a small minority.

Right... It's a public university... Who gets public funding... The public doesn't care for certain things that some at the university prioritize. Funding was pulled(which Written literally can't do anything about) because the government realized the public at large didn't care for that topic. Faculty throws hissy fit partly due to it, even though Whiten, literally can't do anything over it. She's just a university president. She has no power outside of that. As for the other part... Safety is a good enough reason. If there is anything else outside of that... It isn't being highlighted like those 2-3 things. At this point, it should be telling the faculty to get over it and move on.

    This may be an anomaly.
The $6M question is: are the Cooks and Simons (and others) donating to the Woodson Disaster Avoidance Fund, or will they continue to give, regardless of who our coach is? Is this simply an attempt to prop up a failed experiment or is this a sign about the future direction of Indiana basketball NIL?

At this point would anyone really be surprised if IU hired a fictional character to be coach? I mean it doesn't get much lower than "screw it, you played here 40 years ago so you're hired".

From what I read it seemed more like a tantrum from faculty because they can't hate on Israel(which let's be honest, it always ends up at just wanting to wipe Israel off the map. Things go downhill quickly unfortunately). And then mad because they can't get public funding, at a public university, where the public says "we don't care about your gender studies." Is there more? Probably. But those seem to be the two things they really want highlight. So from the outside, it makes it look 100% political. This is topic that literally can't have politics left out because that seems to be the reason behind it all. Might be something best left for Twitter and DMs.

    Very well said.
If the IDS article is any indication of the rift between faculty and Whitten, it only makes it sound like the IU faculty are more interested in pushing their political views than educating college students.
Only confirms my support of Whitten.

Tl/Dr:  The faculty is incapable of reading the room which makes their input a net negative on those topics.

Perhaps having the faculty too involved in the administrative side of things is part of the issue.  Let's just get down to brass tacks.  Bloomington and the Indiana faculty likely hold views closer to San Francisco than (pick almost anywhere in this state).  Whitten has to balance the idea that a whole bunch of people in this state aren't super interested in funding some of the absolute nonsense that passes as "scholarship" and "academic freedom" these days.  For each of those items, it was better for the school to not let the faculty be involved.
The professor lied about using facilities to promote a group that is out of step with the sensibilities of this state.  It also happened at a time where Palestinian support movements on campus were basically nothing but anti-semitic rants that were harassing Jewish students and celebrating the televised murder of Israeli civilians.  There was a reason he lied about the event and the lie meant he should be punished.
Related to that, having a person with similar views at a similar time displaying art in the Eskanazi art center was probably a good idea to 86 as well.  The background of the multimillion dollar donor Eskanazis would lead one to believe that they would probably not appreciate someone who basically promotes killing the jews having their art displayed all over a center with their name on it.  The donor wins over the lefty faculty on that.  Sorry.
Kinsey is a blight on the school.  We can pull Jordan's name off of everything because of his views but still support the extremely questionable stuff Kinsey did with children.  ---- that guy and everything to do with him.
On the last, she did go and oppose the bill.  She doesn't have a vote in government though so don't know what they expected.  Those people are her boss and hold the purse strings so again, being more militant like the faculty wanted is just cutting off your nose to spite your face.  Furthermore, the fact that the University is so wildly out of step with the rest of the state on a whole host of topics is a big reason why people are supportive of bills like that in the first place.  As someone who is politically on the other side of what is the norm in Bloomington and the school in particular, it gets noticed how hostile they are to people who have opinions like me, which are the dominate opinions in this state at the moment.  I think they waste money on stupid BS and it is a disservice to educating people in this state.  You get the perception that the school looks down its nose at the state it is in and that is part of what chases kids out of state after spending 4 years there.

Yep. This is also why I'm confused by people who claim that he could be one of the "outs" in a 4 out 1 in system. Malik isn't going to excel as a player facing the basket. He's not a great athlete. Can't slash and shoots basically a set shot.
He's a classic back to the basket player. And he's a tweener. He's a good, crafty player, but he definitely has some limitations and I think he's pretty close to his ceiling at this point.

If I was a 7 foot center with NBA aspirations, I would, too. Why would I not want to play for a coach whose entire philosophy and game plan is to feed me in the post? There’s none of that pesky guard play - the guards’ job is to feed the post and let me shine.

Yep, this is where I'm at right now. First of all, let me assure you, I have no bias here (wink wink to a few of you)
My initial reaction to an Essegian transfer was totally unmoved. If he couldn't crack the rotation at Wiscy, why should we want him. To a degree I still think there's a tiny bit of merit in that. At the same time, we're talking about someone who'd be playing 8 or 9th man. So what was he able to achieve playing in the same conference as us?
Big 10 All Freshman team honors.  27 MIN, 11.7 PTS, 3.7 REB, 0.7 AST, 40% FG, 36% 3PT as a freshman Would have loved to land Hickman, who is a hometown kid, as 3rd/4th guard in the rotation but it was probably never gonna happen because he wants to play bigger of a role than we could give him. Essegian is realistically probably the best you could hope for in that part of your rotation IMO... if he's willing to accept having a relatively limited, but very clearly defined role, with modest potential to earn more minutes in exchange for the other benefits that come along with being at Indiana.
I assume all these guys want to play and/or have a very clearly defined role, with the goal of playing professional basketball. I also assume that, to varying degrees, people and their circles are realistic with themselves about how likely that is / what they need to get there + do what's best for their immediate financial interest.
The pitch was probably fairly different for Hickman, but not what he ultimately wanted. Essegian's situation has some pretty important differences, though. 1) Coming off a season he fell out of the rotation 2) He's not transferring "up" a conference if he comes here (or down) 3) Multiple years of eligibility left.
For a kid like Essegian, who's best bet at the NBA (no matter where he goes IMO) is probably being an UDFA and catching on with a team that's willing to have a cup of coffee with you ... can't imagine there's a better coach than Woody.
Even if that ultimately doesn't work out, he's got two years of being paid handsomely at his home state's flagship university while being developed by a former NBA coach who will make a referral to get you a shot with a team. All you can ask for as a player. And by staying in the B10, his overseas prospects would probably look better than transferring down, where he'd have more tape, but against worse competition and presumably lesser development in the eyes of foreign leagues.
For a guy like Hickman, he's coming from a smaller school/conference and needs tape against high level competition to have an outside shot at playing professionally here/in the higher level leagues overseas. So for him, the math is a little different.
At the end of the day, they're two different people so they'll prioritize things differently.
TL;DR: If we can sell Essegian on a very clearly defined role because he places enough value on all the other factors IU has to offer, that would be ideal, because you're unlikely to find a better end of the rotation player willing to take on limited minutes, but capable of playing more and doing so at a level that earned freshman all-conference honors.
Great shooter, fills a huge need skillset wise, and you're not asking too much of him... so he's unlikely to single handedly lose you games, but can very readily contribute to winning, and any big performances are just gravy. Sign me up. IMO close to a homerun pick up in that sort of role.
