Fire Coach Woodson + Assessment of Former Posters

I mean, isn’t not prioritizing shooters in terms of who he brings in not also a sign that he doesn’t emphasize the 3?

Why do you pretend that last year was Woodson’s first season at IU? In three years at IU his teams have finished 13th, 14th, and 14th in the conference in three point attempts. He has said that it’s not his job to get his shooters shots. He has said that he thinks basketball is played inside out. He’s telling you that the 3 isn’t a focus for him, and he’s showing you too. How much proof do you need?

We’ve taken 22+ threes in a game 16 times during the 103 games Mike Woodson has coached at IU. 15.5% of his games. We did it 4 times in 33 games this past season. But, sure, we’re going to start averaging 22+ a game now. Very likely.

Cupps never played with TJD. Was he going to run onto the court from the crowd to shoot 3s? Miller Kopp shot 45% from 3 in conference play and Galloway shot 47% from 3 in conference play during TJD’s senior season. Why would you not want to get two 45% shooters more 3s? It’s not rocket science. But, of course, getting them shots wasn’t Woody’s job.

Again, you’re ignoring that Purdue had all that and then some with Zach Edey but still managed to shoot 5 more threes a game than IU. But that’s the difference between a real modern basketball coach and Mike Woodson.

Purdue had that the past two seasons and still managed to take 20+ threes a game. Maybe it is rocket science?

What are you talking about? Neither Cupps nor Mgbako were even on the team in 2022, and Anthony Leal played 24 minutes all season. If you as a team shoot 38% from 3 then you have enough shooting ability on your team to take more 3s. There was no reason why Miller Kopp shouldn’t have been taking 6-7 3s a game in 2022. We have three years of evidence of Mike Woodson not emphasizing the 3 ball but we’re supposed to believe he’s suddenly going to change and IU will be firing away because ‘just trust me bro.’ Like cmon.

It’s 100% the system. IU took 15.5 threes a game in 2022 and only 14.0 threes a game in conference play despite having four rotation players shoot 37% or higher from 3. In fact, IU was actually third in the Big 10 at 38% from 3. But, as Woodson said, it’s not his job to get players 3 point shots. Are we really supposed to believe Woodson is going to completely overhaul his offensive system? Even when his team had 3pt ability his team was dead last in the Big 10 in attempts.

You dont go spend a million dollars on a center to run your fourth straight two big season if you’re going to drastically change your offense. Ware had a usage percentage of 22.9% last year. Ballo had a usage percentage of 21% last year and 22.9% the year before. Ware took 13.3 shots per 40 minutes last year to Ballo’s 12.0. So, sure, slightly less usage, but not *increase your 3 point attempts by 50%* less usage. IU was dead last in 3 point attempts in the Big 10 last year. The 13th place school shot 2.4 more a game than us. We’re not going to suddenly become a top 3 team in the conference in shooting 3s.

No, we went down the Brad Stevens road before, and the road led us to Mike Woodson.

He’s reloading his squirt gun. One tournament win in three years. Most ‘stars’ on his roster than anyone else in the conference last year and he goes 18-13 and misses the tournament. But win three straight offseason banners and folks will crown you king.

No chance. Only someone who is personally invested with this coaching staff would care as much at Tyme/NGW cares.

Really the offseason further supports those who wanted Woodson gone. Imagine these NIL resources with a coach who actually knows what he’s doing (and wants to actually do the job, not just have the job title). Can’t give great ingredients to a mediocre at best chef and expect him to cook a world class meal. But our donors apparently only want to give the money if Woodson’s the coach, so we’re stuck with him. I anticipate he’ll do just enough to keep his job (given IU’s astronomically low standards), and we’ll be right back here next April in the purgatory that is iubb fandom.

And the madness continues. College sports will be unidentifiable five years from now. They’re already worlds different compared to five years ago.

We’re running out of room in Assembly Hall for all these offseason banners. Is it 8 straight titles at this point?

My issue is with the combination of the transfer portal and NIL. Pick one or the other. The current climate where everyone’s a free agent at all times every year sucks. It has already ruined bowl season.

How many scholarships do we have left? Frontcourt is looking a little thin with Sparks leaving. Need a couple backup 4s/5s.

Because I don’t want the head coach of my favorite basketball team to be someone who gives piss poor effort and treats other people, including other people with IU athletics, like they’re beneath him. I want a coach I want to root for. That’s really not Mike Woodson.

This is a huge reason why I don’t like him and why no amount of success will make me change my position re wanting him fired. He needs his billionaire buddies to write checks to bail him out because he won’t do any recruiting himself. It’s like he just wants to sit back, drink wine, play golf, and show up to coach on game day 30ish times a year. All that other responsibilities that comes with the job? Nahhh.

Traveling kinda sucks sometimes, especially when you’ve been doing it for a bit. I’ve canceled job interviews/school visits when I know I won’t accept their offer over a current offer. Not exactly comparable, but if you know you won’t take an offer over one you already have it’s just a waste of time going through the motions. He very well could commit to IU, but going on other visits signals he’s at least receptive to other schools, imo.

It’s the polar opposite of the most comparable workplace. The nba has a salary cap, minimum salaries, maximum salaries. Rookie contracts giving teams multiple years of control over their draft picks. None of that exists in today’s NCAA. Some of these guys IU is targeting, like Ballo, for example, really aren’t transferring because they want a change of scenery, want a bigger role, etc. He was a vital starter on a 27-9 sweet 16 season. They’re transferring for a paycheck. IU appears to be a beneficiary of the system, so some are fine with it, but I think it’s terrible for the sport. My controversial take of the day is that the players need the schools far more than vice versa. By and large, fans watch/show up to games because of the schools, not to watch particular players. Every now and then you get a transcendent player like Caitlyn Clark, but that’s rare. Players are mostly interchangeable. Take Alabama’s football team, take off the Alabama uniform, slap on a Tuscaloosa Tiger uniform, and maybe 10k people show up for novelty reasons. It’d be just another semi-pro league. So, I kind of reject the premise that the players are the reason the schools are making all this money. NIL makes me wish that players that players could just go pro right out of high school. Take the top 30 or so recruits out of each class and college sports would chug along just fine. But, I recognize that this is where we are in college athletics, and it’s probably just going to get worse.
