It helps to have the Koch brothers as a major booster.

    What if....

If IU wins a national title next season I am not sure how he would be gone.  Not only would he still have a significant buyout but we would have reached the goal we all want and in turn proved a lot of people wrong who said he wouldn't ever win a 6th banner at IU.     Like it or not a National Title all but guarantees Crean will be here at least for the rest of his contract.

I still find it strange Fred didn't word his vote of confidence like this one. He left a lot of grey area which tells me Crean better get Yogi/Troy/JBJ to stay and possibly sign Bryant or he's gone. In a sense this is a good strategy if he is going to go after Stevens and doesn't view the crop of college coaches as compelling enough to push Crean out right after the season. Can't really seriously talk to Stevens for 3 weeks anyway. May as well keep Crean around to see if he can keep the core and sign Bryant and Maker. I think the next year at Indiana will come into focus after the next 3 weeks.

If you did the same poll on BTB it would be about 90% replying no.  Just shows the inherent bias in both locations.  A certain type of fan is going to congregate in certain places and while you paint ITH as too positive those over there would say BTB is too negative.  Both sides would also argue that the negativity or positivisty is group think.  Neither is being a full realist and the answer is more in the middle.  The sky isn't falling and we have a chance to be really good next year if the core is back (Yogi/Troy/JBJ) but the program isn't where it should be regardless.   Regardless Alex isn't censoring as others have said.

Alright dude think whatever you want.  Just looked and there are multiple posts speculating on Crean's job status and numerous posts with people being critical of coach.

I want Tom Crean to stay

You simply scoffed at my post suggesting that Crean developed the guys on the team from 2011-13 which he did. It's not like when Vic went to the gym Crean just rolled out the basketballs and said have at it. He gave Vic the tools and guidance to be where he is today. A players work ethic is a big part but the coach also has a major impact too. A lot of what you state here is your opinion but just because you think and state that "Crean's offense is offensive" doesn't make it true. The stats on this show otherwise. I agree with you that he has underachieved and wins and losses are ultimately what matter. I think if he keeps this core together he deserves another year for reasons I've stated throughout this thread. Disagree with me but please stop with the attacks on me and don't ever quote my posts with a cough cough whatever again. Respect my opinion because it is based on how I view what has happened in the program over the past 7 years.

I go on ITH for their coverage, which is excellent. On their forum I can tell you right now there is no censorship of opinions on the matter of Coach.

So your general thesis is that anything good over the past 7 years had nothing to do with Crean and anything bad was all due to Crean. Seems logical!!

Zeller was a big part but was also the collective team. Hulls, Watford, Sheehey, Oladipo. All 4 of them developed by Crean

    Blackmon Thread

He was offered by IU, Michigan State and a number of others. It wasn't that late in the process. He could've gone wherever he wanted and started except maybe UK. Make no mistake he did not come here by default.

This just isn't true. Their forum includes a lot of discourse that is anti-Crean. Yes Bozich needs to worry about keeping his press credentials so he has to toe that line. It's the dudes livelihood and you have to respect what he has built at ITH.

I want Tom Crean to stay

The other regular season (2011-12) included wins over 3 top 5 teams and a team right behind the B1G pack. A very successful season that included a lot of achievements by players that are revered by many IU fans. The constant dismissal of the teams in 2011-12 and 2012-13 as totally average is frustrating because the players of that era deserve better than to have their achievements be discounted just because the season fell short at end. The 20 years argument includes the current coach of course. I guess we should say 22 years at this point if we're looking at everything past 92-93 season and yes Crean was around for 7 of those. Just so happens those 7 years included the best 2 year run and only outright B1G title during that time period. 2 years that included some great wins (regular season, yes, but great wins regardless). I get that many are frustrated and if we went with a different coach I'm fine with it as the results haven't met expectations the past 2 years. What I hate is the dismissal of the Crean teams from 2011-13 and the idea that next years team has no chance of being special. If the core comes back and we add Bryant we will contend for the B1G!

I want Tom Crean to stay

If you think this team won't achieve anything next year past sweet 16 with the core (yogi/JBJ/Troy) and Bryant I think you're being as willfully ignorant as anyone who you consider is a blind crean follower. Like anything there's grey area and both of the extremes ignore that. Crean is not an aloof coach with no business being the coach at Indiana just like anyone we replace with Crean isn't as likely to end up with worse results than Crean. It goes both ways but that is how it is in the season of conjecture.

We all want titles. I'm not at all lowering standards for what IU should be. I'm not going to ignore that to be a team who consistently gets 1-4 seeds year in and year out it takes time. And to answer anyone's question yes it can take longer than 7 years to find that consistency. What makes me believe he can build that? He had 2 years where we achieved more in a regular season than an iu coach in 2 decades. We have a team like that next year.

It has to be a good class. Read through Glass' comments it said as much. Basically his press release said from here on out Crean's equity is gone and he'll be judged based in each individual year.

I want Tom Crean to stay

I just think in this discussion saying that we get Stevens in 2011 is unfair because we have no idea and ta the past. As far as your second question yes if Crean can put next years team in the final four he deserves 2 more years. It may pain some of you but at that point he'd have been in your tourney 5 of past 6 years with 2 sweet sixteens and a final four. Then he may be bringing in Alkins and some more recruits. So yes with a final 4 next year I still think he can build quality teams here

Read my posts throughout this thread. No I don't think so but this was exactly what Glass was implying in his statement. Keep the core, get Bryant and we have a title co tender next year. Crean's status depends on how those chips fall.

I want Tom Crean to stay

You're misconstruing that year. We lost to OSU but then went into Ann Arbor to beat a national runner up Michigan team with the league title on the line. Also won at Michigan State and Ohio State. It sucked to lose to Cuse but it was a great year. The best we've had in 2 decades.

I want Tom Crean to stay

What you say about consistency is the key and a major reason why some still support him for next year. He has shown the ability to use the resources in how he built the teams in 2011-13. Whether he can do it consistently is the issue but those who support will say that if you fire now you lose the best year of this group of players. Why not see what this core can achieve if they all stay? Can he maintain after I am not sure but I don't think much harm is done to give him another year if he keeps this core and gets Bryant or Maker.

If you want to talk in five levels of hypothetical sure we would've been great. The thing is what you stated here is more fan fiction than anything close to reality. Honestly we should've fired Knight in 1988 hired coach K and been dominant for the past 30 years. Why didn't we do this ugh!!!!!!

Upsets the equivalent of Syracuse beating IU happen multiple times every year in the tournament. People on here act like that was an all time great upset when in actuality it doesn't register nationally as a great upset.

I want Tom Crean to stay

And we then miss out on 2 really good years where we achieved more than we have in the 20 before it if you fire Crean 4 years ago before 2011-13 seasons.

Count me 100% in the camp that if Yogi/Troy/JBJ/RoJo all stay and we add Bryant that Crean should get another year. Argue whatever you want about our ceiling but that squad has final four potential with Crean at the helm. Crean has built teams before that have made the final 4 and others that were really close (yes we were close in 2011-12 and 2012-13). The last 2 years have been frustrating but looking at our potential roster right now for next year I am in for another year. If a bunch of departures happen you re examine. But with that squad you go into next year with Crean as coach and tell him they need to be top 25 all year, make at least the elite 8 or you're down. We're a year behind schedule on this group of guys. Many of us thought make tourney is ok for 2013-14 and be able to make a deep run in 2014-15. Instead we made It a year late and have a roster that CAN make a deep run in 2015-16. With the core back and the addition of Bryant we have all the tools (including coach) to do it. It's fine if you want to abandon ship now but it seems like we'd at that point have dealt with pain of this core group of guys and throwing out any chance of redemption in 2015-16.

If you have a different opinion than me you must have no clue what you're talking about is a good way to win an argument.
