Who would you hire to replace CTC?
KingPG21 replied to KelleyHoosh's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
I think he might have been talking about the coach thinking he is bigger than IU. Since he was talking about Smart being a bit of a loud mouth -

I don't know if we'd be able to sign a super star coach, unless we put out a huge amount of money to hire them. And of course that is already going to be difficult because of Crean's massive buyout. There are other issues with hiring someone seen as a super star coach. Money is going to be an issue. And from a pure basketball standpoint I don't know if we'd be seen as a superior program to what they are already. I'm not a fan of limiting the people we could hire as a coach either. -

Do you care to elaborate? If it is experience I don't get the point in shoehorning the program into hiring someone because they are experienced. -

I'm not a fan of Woodson at all. The system he has set up is solid enough in principle and his teams execute it well enough. But I don't think a lot of the complaints we have about Crean would be a ton different with Woodson. I know the NBA style of play is different, but even when he was in Atlanta his offense wasn't very advanced even for an NBA franchise. And now in New York it has developed a lot into Melo isoing just about every time down the court. People complain about Crean's offense often devolving into isos, I don't see Woodson making that huge of an adjustment to the college game with what his teams do. -

Maybe, I don't know, if that did happen I could see it having influence on his decision. And definitely with the sanctions that any coach was going to have to deal with. That would negatively impact just about any coach seemingly -

I'd like it because IPFW were always really good defensive teams for the talent he had at his disposal. His offense wasn't that good, but again he was a bit limited in what he would be able to do with the guys he recruited at IPFW. -

I thought the issue was he tried to get more money in his contract and that was the issue. Though looking at some of the money involved in Crean's current contract I'd want to see what Bennett was asking for -

Bennett. That team is so fundamentally sound on both ends of the court. Dude has done a good job building some programs at schools that you wouldn't expect to be easy to build good programs at. Dane Fife. I know some people want someone with experience to come in and run the team, because they keep talking about how great the program is and that would prevent a "green guy" from succeeding here. I don't buy that, for one I don't see the program as one of the great programs in college basketball right now. One of the most historic yep, one of the great programs no. Dane Fife did a hell of a job in a small stint at IPFW, and now is coaching with one of the best coaches out there in Izzo. Stevens. Not going to happen anytime soon, honestly believe that. Don't see him jumping ship and leaving all the money he his making on the table. Maybe if in two or three years if we still haven't made progress with Crean we send some fellers out Brad's way to gauge his how much he would want to be here -
Steve Alford doing great in first year at UCLA
KingPG21 replied to WayneFleekHoosier's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
Best candidates? How does he qualify as one of the best candidates? The dude has done nothing in his career in the postseason. You guys whine and complain about Crean and him not getting past the Sweet Sixteen enough and think Alford is a good hire, that makes absolutely no sense -
I've been saying he deserves until the end of next season before we seriously look at other candidates. This all being said I am not very happy about what I perceive to be as mediocrity, and my fear is that this is going to continue with Crean. This is IU basketball, mediocrity should never been seen as acceptable.

That isn't guaranteed he would play in the D League. That is all based on what they have seen on Vonleh mostly at the college level and a little bit at the high school level. Once coaches get a hold of guys they usually find some way to incorporate them into a rotation, Reggie Evans played 25 minutes a game last year on a playoff team when his entire skill set amounts to he can rebound the ball. Also the D League comment came out of one GM's mouth.

I'm with Hovadipo people keep talking about JH like it is a sure thing the guy is gone. I'll talk about the guy being gone when he is gone, I don't read anything into rumors because they are usually nothing more than rumors.
-
He is going to get paid millions of dollars to develop in the NBA. I'll take the chance over him developing in the NBA every day of the week over Crean developing him. Given that Crean has never developed a big man I don't get why people act like Vonleh would be any different.

Can we wait until the guy does literally anything in the tournament to even consider him. Also, he is doing this mostly with Ben Howland's recruits -
With offense is just further baffles me that people want Mike Woodson as the coach. Go watch the dude throughout his coaching career, a lot of it is putting it in his best players hand, first Josh Smith, now Melo, and running a ton of isos. People complain about Crean's offense being that way, Woodson would be that way X10.
-
His body control could use some work as well. Teams eventually made the pretty easy adjustment of stepping in front of the guy when he beat his man. Then due to his lack of body control he just bulldozed them over, and get an offensive foul resulting in more turnovers.
-
Never said that. Said Woodson is far from the right guy for the job is what I said, and don't give me that bull crap that the Knicks don't have enough, they have enough to make the playoffs in what is a historically horrible conference outside of the Pacers and Heat. He is not nearly as good as you make him out to be, you talk about Crean's lack of postseason success, Woodson has made it to the second round and never past it in the NBA. He is nothing special as a coach
-
From what I researched he actually jumped immediately to being an assistant on Calhoun's staff following his retirement from the NBA. Think he was pegged and "groomed" to eventually replace Calhoun. Don't know if it was right after being hired or how that ended up going down
-
He is a pretty good example of a guy who limited head coaching experience, in his case no head coaching experience if I remember correctly, working out. I wouldn't be opposed to us trying a young guy like him and giving him a chance.
-
He has been playing better recently, which is always good to see
-
Shoot, yeah my bad. He was
-
Not really. He has a decent enough scheme, but he isn't really very good at in game decision making, or more accurately inter series decision making in the NBA. Not a fan of the idea of hiring him.
-
Apparently, just makes it more impressive that teams shoot such a low percentage against them when they get so many open court opportunities.
-
It isn't exactly like other top teams are burning it up out there, Heat losing again at home to Denver right now

21 turnovers...... only in my dreams do we value taking care of the ball
