    Could It Happen Again...

That is awesome. And I don't even think it's that crazy of an idea. There are actually quite a few schools down here in Tennessee where I coach that employ the technique. It can be a nightmare. Especially with the onside kicks. Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners mobile app

A Macro View of Last Night's 73-72 Win

Great write-up.  Especially love #4.  IU doubled their shooting percentage in the second half once they started trusting the system and moving the ball (2 first half assists, 11 in the second half).  Now Tommy boy has the concrete stats to back up what I'm sure he's already been telling the young guns.

    IU vs ILLINOIS Game Thread

I really do think he'll be gone. Wilson isn't an fool. He sees the same thing we do every week. He's also not OK with just being a decent football team. He has his sights set on reaching a pretty high level and that's not happening with the defense being run the way it is now. He's been asked about it a lot and has never said anything indicating he thinks Mallory is a good coach or the right man for the job. It's always just along the lines of "we've got to use what we've got" and so on. In fact, when he was asked if he had faith in Mallory before the Minnesota game, he simply said "I better" instead of giving any actual affirmation which I thought was pretty telling. THE Key to Victory: Illinois

There are four keys missing from this list. I know. But I honestly couldn't even pretend to say anything other than the following mattered this week. So I decided not to. There is one and only key to Saturday's matchup: #1 Show up at Winning Time Winners find a way to win. Losers find a way to lose. Period. If you've followed the Indianapolis Colts at all the past two years, you've seen a decent example of a "winner." It doesn't matter how badly the team is outplayed throughout the game, when it comes to "winning time" at the end of the game, Andrew Luck and the Colts somehow find a way to come out on top (see last week against Houston). Indiana has been the complete opposite for some time now. It doesn't matter how well they play for the majority of the game, when it comes down to the end, they invariably find a way to lose - and shatter the fragile hearts of foolishly loyal fans like myself. They are "losers." Whether it's failing to punch it in on 4th and goal... leading #4 Iowa 24-14 in the 4th quarter only to lose 24-42... or dropping an open pass in the end zone... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-fRGUjQT7cs You can really take your pick of games IU has lost in winning time. I'm sure everyone has their favorites (feel free to post your own below). Being a "loser" is one of the hardest things for a coach to correct, because it has so much more to do with mental approach than technical performance (take it from a guy who took over a team with a three year record of 0-32). The good news for the Hoosiers, and the reason I think I can justify making this the only key to this week's game, is that the Illini are "losers" too. I'm sure those quotes sound familiar. The first one is Kevin WIlson and the second is...someone like Kofi Hughes right? The first is actually from Illinois head coach Tim Beckman and the second is from Illini senior receiver Spencer Harris. The Illini and Hoosiers have a lot more in common than just their 3-5 records. Both schools' fan bases are probably more excited for the start of basketball season than Saturday's football game. Both teams are still in a transition period with relatively new coaches. Both squads are chock-full of young players. Both have potent quarterbacks and arial attacks. Both are coming off heartbreaking losses. And of course, both teams are as bad as it gets on defense by B1G standards. The Illini are ranked second to last in the conference in total defense ahead of only, you guessed it... In reality, the more you read about tomorrow's game, the more sympathy you feel for the folks in Champagne. You understand their pain. You almost want them to do well. But not Saturday. This is only Tim Beckman's second year. He doesn't get to go bowling yet. Not before Wilson. It's time for Indiana to violently shake off their "losing" mindset. It's time for them to win no matter what. No matter how many fans leave the game. No matter what calls don't go their way. No matter what mistakes a player or coach might make. Win anyways. Prediction: While a lot of people are already talking about "next year," I'm focused on the guys for whom no such future exists. I expect the seniors to will the team to three more victories. In the words of Ted Bolser, "Win them all...We're not doubting ourselves against any team." It all starts tomorrow afternoon. If football teams had doppelgängers, Indiana's would be Illinois. Although the Illini's defense is statistically a hair better than that of the Hoosier's, the Indiana offense is much better than that of the Illini. Indiana is 12th in passing offense and 58 in rushing offense. Illinois is 35th in passing offense and 99th in rushing offense. In a game that should feature offensive fire power, Indiana has more. INDIANA 45 ILLINOIS 31 WE'RE NOT DEAD YET!

Much like Wilson, I'm dismissing the defense as a relevant part of the game. Illinois's's defense is terrible too, but our offense is much better. We will win this game or I'm a monkey's uncle. Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners mobile app

    Keys to Victory: Minnesota

Well here we go. Three "winnable" home games left. Three wins needed for a bowl birth, Without delay, here's what the Hoosiers will have to do to win their fifth straight homecoming game: #1 Shake off the Negativity No doubt it's hard work being a loyal IU football fan, but at the end of the day, we're just fans. The players are the ones who have actually dedicated their college lives trying to make this season a special one for Indiana. As hard as this roller coaster year has been for fans, seniors like Kofi Hughes and Ted Bolser are the ones who have the most to lose. Now that the number of "winnable" games matches the number of wins still needed to make a bowl, it's desperate times for the seniors. To add to the stress, the media has been calling for at least one of their coach's job (guilty). It's no wonder the players were relieved to have some time to step away from everything: "It's almost like your girlfriend. You do something every single day, it doesn't really give you the opportunity to miss it. And so I think getting to go home for the weekend...it gives you a chance to kind of miss football, get your hunger back." The Hoosiers need to show up to Memorial Stadium on Saturday with the same confidence and swagger they left it with several weeks ago after beating Penn State. When the offense isn't relaxed, they're far less effective (see Missouri). They can't start thinking about blowing their bowl chances, or they surely will. #2 Stop the Run at all Cost Minnesota's offense is completely one-dimensional. While their rushing offense is ranked an impressive 23rd in the NCAA, the passing offense is 121st out of 125 teams. Their two quarterbacks, have been equally ineffective passing the ball as the team has averaged single digit completions in their first eight games. Philip Nelson has gotten the majority of the snaps lately, but Mitch Leidner poses more of threat to the Hoosiers as the mobile quarterback is the team's second leading rusher. If the Indiana defense can limit the Gopher's rushing attack, there is no way their offense will be able to keep pace with that of Indiana's. At least Minnesota shouldn't be able to move the ball through the air, but Michigan State's offense wasn't supposed to be capable of moving the ball at all before they hung 42 on the Hoosier defense. Anything is possible which is why the coaches have to... #3 Adjust to the Inevitable The Hoosiers have a real knack for allowing previously unknown players to have put up Heisman worthy numbers. Navy's Keenan Reynolds, Michigan State's entire offense, and Michigan's Jeremy Gallon have all had career days against the Hoosier defense so far this year. This week, watch for Minnesota freshman Donovahn Jones to have a breakout game. The converted QB lines up at WR, but will likely do most his damage running the ball on receiver sweeps. Last week against Nebraska, he had carried ball 4 times and averaged over 10 yards per carry. Whether it is indeed Jones who appears on his way to a career day, or another Gopher, the Indiana defense simply needs to adjust. Kevin Wilson said earlier this year that bad coaches make adjustments in the film room on Sunday, but good coaches make the adjustments during the game. By Wilson's definition, the defense's coaches were "bad" last week if nothing else because they failed to adjust the defense to make sure Gallon would be covered. The coaching staff has to make adjustments this week. Period. #4 Make the QB Situation Work Seth Littrell said the offense would need both quarterbacks to be at its best. That's probably true, but the two have struggled to effectively compliment each other lately. When one is up the other seems to be down, and apparently the roommates are having a bit of trouble sharing. Wilson said Sudfeld has been "moody and moping" (ouch!) since Tre's play and and playing time have improved. If both quarterbacks are going to be used, they both need to be on board and focus on doing their job rather than trying to do to much and outshine the other. Tre will most likely start, but Sudfeld won't spend the entire game on the bench. When he gets his chance, there can't be any drop off in the offense as there was last week. #5 Score When It Counts Kevin Wilson blamed the offense for the Michigan game, and to some extent, he's right: "To me, that game is on the offense...If we can't stop them, we'd better score 100, 50, whatever it takes. In the fourth quarter, when we needed to make the plays to win the game, we didn't make them." He's obviously not saying the defense played well; he's saying the defense is hopeless so the offense has to make up for it. We've known that to be the situation since before the season started. Bottom line, it doesn't matter how many times the defense lets Minnesota score as long as our offense scores one more. Last week, wasn't the first time the offense failed to capitalize down the stretch which probably is due to their previously mentioned decreased effectiveness when they tighten up. Prediction: Indiana will grossly sell out against the run, but Minnesota's passing attack is so bad that it won't matter. Tre Roberson will officially reestablish himself as the leader of the offense, and the seniors won't let the Golden Gophers ruin their bowl hopes. Oh yea, and it's homecoming. Call me crazy... INDIANA 42 MINNESOTA 17

    The History of Mallory

Absolutely right. Our Big Ten Schedule is definitely tougher in general than non-conference, but improvement is still possible. Minnesota's doing it right now (391 yards per game in Aug./Sept. and 334 in October). They've improved their statistics even though the teams they played in the early part of the season pale in comparison to their October schedule: Aug/Sept (391 yards per game) UNLV New Mexico State Western Ill. San Jose St. Iowa October (334 yards per game) Michigan Northwestern Nebreska

    The History of Mallory

Have to agree with IU Hoosier41 on this. We don't need to hire any high profile D.C. (we won't). I'd actually prefer coach who has proven himself as either a D.C. or a defensive-minded H.C. at a small D-I or even D-II school. So many of these guys just start as graduate assistants and get continually promoted without actually proving that they can coach. I want somebody who has proven he understands how to coach defense both in terms of schematics and player development. Geez, any pee-wee coach could at least teach the players to tackle.
  25. Will_Logan

    The History of Mallory

I can only speculate, but I have to believe his hiring had everything to do with his father's success at Indiana and nothing to do with his own coaching ability. Who knows, maybe Wilson was hesitant about Mallory's ability coming in and therefore set up the peculiar "co-coordinator" system on defense in the first place.
