It was pretty short and a lot was going on but just a few things I took away from the practice tonight. The biggest thing for me was Zach McRoberts has drastically improved his shot. They did a drill where they shot 3’s around the arc for 45 seconds at each spot and he couldn’t have missed more than 10. My only concern now is whether he will be confident enough to take those shots in game. I didn’t see anything about how much he scored in the scrimmage on Saturday so I’m guessing it wasn’t significant. I tried to also watch Juwan and Justin during this drill. Both looked improved but neither of them really did too much in this drill to make their shot stand out a lot. The second biggest thing to look for I saw was both Devonte and Al didn’t practice at all which meant the second team had Johnny Jager as the PG. Neither of them seemed to be in any pain or moving any differently. They were both dressed to practice but didn’t participate in anything for the duration of the practice we got to see. Most likely minor stuff but something to look for here early. Lastly, it was hard to take it all in and keep track since they were all shooting at the same time but it seemed like they were still missing a lot of free throws. This was a big problem last year and seemed to get to the point where it was clearly a psychological problem that infected the whole team. I hope this doesn’t become a problem this year. Archie also spoke at the end and gave us instructions on things for the student section to do during certain parts of the game. During the first 4 minutes of the game we are supposed to yell “boing” each time the other team bounces the ball. After the first 4 minutes we are supposed to pick a certain player on the other team and boo him whenever he has the ball for the rest of the half. Lastly, when the other team is shooting free throws, we’re supposed to put our hands up and be quiet until they start their shooting motion and then yell “brick” while throwing our arms a certain direction. I could see the attendance problem going one of two ways this year. We were only given 12 games this year instead of the 16 we were supposed to get because of the amount of students who bought tickets. Obviously the hype for this year because of Romeo is the cause for more students being interested in getting tickets this year. Hopefully this excitement results in everyone showing up and filling the seats. Or you could look at it pessimistically and think that people who don’t care as much were given tickets now instead of people who do care and will show up to every single game. It’s really tough to ensure everyone gets the same opportunity to attend games but also guarantee to get passionate students who will show up regardless of who the opponent is or any other outlying factors. The biggest factor I think is the team being able to consistently show a quality product. If we’re winning, people will show up. Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners

The idea is definitely the start of something but I don’t think the execution is there. I’d say the safest way to go about it is to just let the first 200 people that arrive sit there but I think the reason this was implemented was to force people to show up early and doing it that way wouldn’t necessarily guarantee that. This is what I was thinking. People will rather sit with their friends than have better seats most likely. Not sure if the fact that he is appealing allows him to continue going to class (I’m not sure if he is appealing, but according to his demeanor I’ve heard, I assume he will). I don’t think they should get rid of the scrimmage because that’s kind of the main point of the event. However, people saying that that’s what pulls the fans isn’t necessarily correct. As people have alluded to, the majority of the people leave their seats when the scrimmage starts. People aren’t going to leave during the part they came to see. Granted, this might be to get in line for autographs which I know people do around that time but I don’t know how many of those people who leave when the scrimmage starts are getting in line or just leave because I haven’t stayed for autographs before. Just realized that Hale had no catches yesterday. Did he not play and I missed it or did we really not throw at all to him? If it’s the latter then that’s the same problem we had with DeBord and Cobbs last year. You can’t just not call plays that target your top receivers. However, I think DeBord has done a subjectively better job this year than last year. Although play calling has been conservative maybe that’s intentional before we play some stiffer competition.
