Yep this has been my argument as well. I know what analytics say, but I am having my team take the best available shot 100/100 times. Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners mobile app

This is interesting to me. I, for one, am a proponent of shooting the midrange shot when it’s open. 100 years ago I was recruited by Grinnell College in IA. In speaking with Coach Arsenault at the time, he told me unequivocally that he wanted at least 50% of the shots taken to be 3s. I have to admit that as a teenager who could shoot I loved the idea of that. However, like fine gruel my opinions have aged. Now looking back on that conversation I am really turned off by that philosophy as defense wasn’t a real emphasis. I didn’t end up playing there but I loosely followed their program and don’t remember them winning a whole lot in that era. Grinnell is the school that had the guard go for 138 in a game in the last 10 years or so. Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners mobile app

After dominating Rutgers last week, we head on the road to take on a Maryland team that looked like a top-10 team to start the season but has since cooled off. Maryland has struggled in recent weeks but still has plenty of talent to knock off anyone on any given Saturday. With dual-threat QB Tyrell Pigrome likely starting and their group of talented runningbacks, our defense will have to make sure we tackle and don't burned on the ground. Maryland does have the worst passing defense in the conference and was exposed by Purdue last week so they will have their hands full trying to slow down Penix and our talented receivers. Must remember that we are going on the road and life on the road in the Big Ten is never easy. We are currently a 5.5 point favorite and ESPN's Football Power Index gives us a 50.3% of winning on Saturday. Bill Connelly's SP+ metrics give us a 64% chance of winning. In terms of overall SP+ rankings: Maryland (3-3): Overall: 43 Offense: 56 Defense: 44 Special Teams: 125 Indiana (4-2): Overall: 25 Offense: 23 Defense: 32 Special Teams: 14

Side bet on this. If we do lose ... 1) How soon does the "Fire Archie" thread get started? 2) Who starts it?

0-0 tie with Maryland. I give van Benekom credit as he is really building a defense and we have given up just one goal in the last six games. The problem with that is we are just 3-1-2 during that stretch with three 1-0 wins, two 0-0 ties and a 1-0 loss. I like what I am seeing and clearly an improvement but the offense is really anemic. Its not that they are building and missing chances. Its that they can't connect on passes or even get an attack started. Not a bad result on the road though.

Fire or ‘Way to Go!’ Tom Allen?

Fortunately we're not competing against the fans commitment! I think Frost will get it figured out there- but they need a culture change from the Mike Riley era debacle and are very beatable right now. The comparison of NU football to IU basketball is spot on too.

Maybe this was already discussed. Dre Davis played AAU with Indy Heat, same team as Ivey, Pack and Furst. Ivey of course has committed to Purdue and in my view projects to be a very good player for them (he was over 43% from 3 at EYBL, averaged over 14 ppg). There has been some rumbling that he would decommit, but that could just be speculative chatter. I went to watch some of the games at EYBL. Watching the game, Davis was the guy that got your attention. Just the most active and aggressive out there, making things happen. And then you'd look up who this kid is, and you'd see that he's got a (then) low rank and committed to Nebraska of all things. It really didn't fit. I think with that early commitment to a basic nobody team, nobody paid too much attention to him. But he absolutely showed out. Averaged 17.9 points, and 6.1 rebounds. Only 41% shooting, but still a guy making plays. Plays more like a small forward than a SG. Maybe Ivey got in his ear to go to Purdue? The Louisville offers to Dre and his little brother is an interesting wrinkle. Purdue fans seem to want to bank the scholarship, or find another big to keep the pipeline going there. With his now open recruitment, I'd bet there are some programs that would have liked to watch him play. I would not say that I got the impression that he's a star in the making. But he is a productive player, and effort alone can go a long way. As an aside... I'm pretty pro-player in all things. That said I really hope de-commitments don't become a common thing in CBB.

Ironically wrong thread, given that Top 50-ish pg Diarra is choosing between Georgia, 11-21 last year, A&M, 14-18 last year, and IU.

    Alante Brown (WR) 2020

What did alante see today? he saw whop get the ball in multiple ways, I’d say it’s safe to say he’s going to be used as a whop type player wherever he goes. He saw David Ellis be utilized in many roles as well, someone else I’d compare him to. He saw 10 receptions for 182 yards. My brother also saw him and met him in line for the bathroom lol. Said kid is thick lol built like rondale Moore in the legs is what he said= tough to get down, stays on feet well....well that’s typically what it equates to if you’re athletic. Use those tree trunks to your advantage.

Agree that he has the traits and experience to help defensively. But I just see a glaring misfit with Archie’s offensive philosophy. Just don’t see a role on that end. At all. I would like his fit as a 4 in a really high tempo style with a lot of player movement, like Eric Musselman’s system. Maybe what Smart does. Would have been fine with Crean. In an open court game he could absolutely be a problem. But Archie’s tempo and the stuff he runs, or at least what he was running last year, really minimize Smith’s strengths. I actually think transferring would have made a ton of sense for him. Since he chose to stay, I really hope the kid finds a niche. But I don’t see it. Love to be wrong.

2019 Off-Season IU Roster News and Moves

https://mobile.twitter.com/hoopvision68/status/1167083458772066304 https://mobile.twitter.com/hoopvision68/status/1166857446066982913 This is some stuff that Wes Miller ran at UNCG that I would think it likely that Mike Roberts would have brought along and Archie could easily work into some of his base actions. Green, maybe even Hunter, running the baseline with any of the 3 bigs executing the pin down/slip, though I think it fits TJD the best. Great action to keep the post defender from over aggressively fronting. Love it. But, ya know, Wes Miller is a mid major Coach. So what could Roberts have really learned from him?
