I'm too tired to pick a fight with anyone, but maybe, just maybe, there wasn't any significantly higher ceiling for McBob, Green, Durham after last season. We're never going to know what could have been with Davis because he's injury prone or so it seems. Smith is just a major enigma to me -- potential seems to be there, but he seems unwilling to fulfill it. Disappointment is an understatement. JMO just can't carry this team on his own shoulders and maybe he's wearing down from trying too hard to do so.

As many darn years as anyone wants to give him. Some may give him 20, some may give him 10, some may give him 4,5 or even some gave him 1 year before they want his head. Personally I would think a coach should at least be around until his first true recruiting cycle(RP) are seniors but that’s just me Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners mobile app

Edwards is averaging 25 PPG. He's pretty awesome... The problem with IU's starters is that most of them are redundant from a skills standpoint. Athletes withediocre ball handling, good defense, and middling shooting. That player is valuable when there are one or 2, but when 4 players fit that description it's a problem. Purdue's pieces fit together much better. For instance, if IU had Nick Zeisloft, I don't think anybody would say he's an awesome all around basketball player, but the fact that he's a great shooter would have an outsized impact. Last years team had 0 wins against the top 50 and 0 wins against tournament teams. Last years team also lost by 20 to ISU and Fort Wayne. This years team has 3 wins against against the top 50 and 4 wins against the top 55 and 0 bad losses in committees eye. Losing streaks suck but this was always going to be the toughest stretch of games. B1G is brutal. Regardless of people on here saying Purdue has been trash all year the metrics have always disagreed. They are one of the most offensively efficient teams in the country. They are NET 18 most of their losses could of went either way. IU is still a tourney team but they are not special like some were expecting I guess with the addition of Romeo. Having said that IU needs to start playing better or they will find themselves coming up on national people’s bubble talk. 12-6 4 of those losses on the road to Top 20 NET teams. Home loss was to NET-14, worst loss so far is on the road NET-78 IU is still a tourney team just not a special one Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners mobile app

And if it wasn’t for Juwan’s creativity and mobility around the basket, then the clogged lane would have even more of an impact than it already does. If Juwan was on an opposing team, then many of his shots would tick me off and make me say, “That lucky bastard! That was a sh*t shot!” We know differently and know he’s skilled around the rim. Fitzner, it was hoped, would be that three point threat. I was hoping McRoberts would also be more of a three-point threat this year, but I’m struggling to remember when he last took a shot before tonight. Phinisee will become a deadeye shooter from outside, I believe, but he’s still working back into the rotation. Al is a far more capable shooter this year than he was last year, and I hope he continues to improve. Moore is supposed to be a good perimeter shooter and I would like to see him play more than Fitzner at this point, but he’s always playing inside as a big (which still seems a bit out of position for him). I agree the lack of outside shooting is a glaring weakness, but the biggest weakness is lack of depth, which injuries have certainly not helped with. We’re lucky Romeo is (usually) more than capable of creating and finishing in the lane and that Juwan has brilliant post moves that allow him to efficiently score as an undersized big. Clearing the lanes with outside shooting, hitting free throws, and less injuries would make for a much more successful season. We need a healthy roster and we need “the shot doctor” back on the bench. I miss him as an assistant coach.

Not even close. That’s crazy if you feel this team is as bad as last years team. No losses to bad teams. We are 12-6 with multiple good wins. Last years team was a .500 team. Let’s be a little less dramatic and look at some facts. Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners mobile app

    So some concerns I’m having...

So I don’t think you are suggesting that we should only expect a great staff to develop top 50 kids right? We have a cupboard full of 4 star recruits though. I would expect a great staff to be very good at developing 3 star kids and up over time. The staff has had 2 years with many of the kids and they are about the same. Maybe 2 years with kids you did not recruit is not enough time. I can accept that, but it is as the thread title is named a concern I am having. Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners mobile app

Mike White - Pittsburgh Post-Gazette High school notebook: Big E — Ethan Morton is close to a "triple-double" player for Butler Ethan Morton goes into games with an open mind. Butler is never quite sure what defense an opponent will throw at Morton, so he has no pre-conceived notions of exactly what he must do for his team to achieve success. So he just does everything. Scores a lot. Rebounds a lot. Passes a lot. Morton is a 6-foot-5 point guard who has been highly touted for a few years. But what Morton is doing in his junior season deserves more accolades. He is having a season that is extremely rare in the WPIAL — or any level of basketball. This statistic says it all: Morton is eight assists away from averaging a triple-double. Morton is the third-leading scorer in the WPIAL at 28.1 points a game. He also is averaging 10.4 rebounds and 9.8 assists a game. His performance against Seneca Valley this past Tuesday was typical of his do-what-it-takes attitude. He had 19 points, nine below his average, but he had 19 rebounds and 12 assists. “What he does, I think we take for granted sometimes,” Butler coach Matt Clement said. “But when you sit back and think about it, it’s like, ‘Wow.’” It should be pointed out that Butler isn’t padding his statistics, either. Two or three people chart statistics for Butler at games, and then the team has a statistician double-check film. “How teams are defending him might call for a different way for him to play,” Clement said. “But his No. 1 thought always is, how are we going to win? If it takes 0 points, but 30 assists and 20 rebounds, then he’ll try to do that. But I doubt there is a kid walking around the WPIAL who is more unselfish as far as just wanting to win first.” Oscar Robertson is one of only two players in NBA history to average a triple-double for the entire season. He was the Big O. The way Morton is going, he is the Big E of the WPIAL. Besides his averages, Morton is shooting 53 percent from the field, 33 percent from 3-point range and 82 percent from the free-throw line for a Butler team that is 11-3. Morton has scholarship offers from Pitt, Indiana, Ohio State, Wisconsin, Virginia, Stanford, Oregon and many others. “I’ve said it before that he’s getting recruited, not just because of his scoring, but because of his versatility, his basketball IQ and how unique he is,” said Clement.

To me, the most critical mistake by Archie so far is Fizner. He inherited most of this roster but had a chance to bring in a third scorer with Romeo and JMO. If he hits here this is a completely different team, jmo.

    So some concerns I’m having...

Remember all our optimism about having the best coaching staff in college basketball? Remember how optimistic we were about player development when we hired Schilling? Early on things looked promising as JMO really blossomed last year but after more time I am not seeing it. Has anyone really seemed to get much better? McBob seems worse, Davis has been hurt too much to say, Green has been a little better, Moore has had a small improvement, Smith can jump high but looked better at the end of last year, Al has been a little better. With such an amazing staff and a great developer of players in Schilling, where is the improvement? Sure Al and Green are a little better but they would be a little better in year 2 at any school. So yeah it is early and admiringly I am looking for improvement on offense but some of these guys have had 2 off seasons to develop and yet I am not seeing any early improvements that warrant the claims made about the staff. Hopefully we can start to see development, better than average development, as the year goes on. Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners

Im giving Archie the benefit of the doubt til he can cycle through the remainder of Crean players/recruits and get some guys healthy. Im not seeing boneheaded coaching like I saw with Crean yet. That said Archie needs to figure out how to make the tourney no question next year.

Yeah, I tried that one after the Nebraska game, along with Beilein, Wright and Barnes. Fan frustration defies the “it takes time” argument. And frankly, getting whacked at Mackey makes it tough.

Major props to CTA here. He could have easily gone internal. And who knows maybe there is a talented future OC on the staff. However, he clearly put aside his loyalty realizing the importance of this hire and the need to get someone in here with a track record of success in orchestrating an offense. And he still made sure his staff remained intact. Debord wasn't a disaster but the offense certainly underwhelmed with him at the helm. Overall, I think CTA he has done a good job of assembling his staff. Recruiting couldn't be any better given where we are at as a program. If we actually start winning more games it's not out of the question that we could do even better. Allen and staff certainly have sold a vision and it doesn't hurt that he seems very charismatic and likeable. Really looking forward to this year (and i've said that the past few but do truly believe with the guys we have battling under center this one could be different along with the OC)
