Some of you may have noticed on social media the hoosiers hosted several high school coaches yesterday (to observe practice). I got a quick update from someone who watched. -Juwan didn’t practice due to a non-serious leg injury -Phinisee is pushing Green for starting PG role -Deron seems to be moving well but won’t be ready to play serious minutes for a while. -Justin Smith is going to have a big year -the coach also didn’t love Romeo’s intensity level. -he also said we are deep at wing/forward (not news to anyone) Nothing groundbreaking. I think this is continued good news on Phinisee.

I had a chance to watch a practice last week and even though I am optimistic about the upcoming season I was not overly impressed with anyone. Archie talked to us after and even he thought it was a bad practice but it was the first time many had run full court. Several were also fighting colds. Phinisee did seem close to Green but green did not really look that much different than last year. It is good that someone now can push Green in practice. Rob seemed quicker than I expected and his outside shot for me is better than Greens. Evan F looks to have a smooth shot. He also had some nice low post moves but I think his outside shot will be a really nice asset in some games. Hunter seemed a little stiff at times but when the started to scrimmage he was a quick and willing shooter and hit several mid range shots. Romeo was good and you could feel that had this been a game he would have been ready to go harder. Good from about anywhere. I asked Archie about Derons timing as I noticed he did not do any of the full court work. Archie thought he would be able to do more and more in the upcoming weeks but he did say that deron would have to then work on dropping weight. Morgan took more outside shots but was not hitting. In fact most guys did not hit well from 3 to be noteworthy except perhaps Evan F. It was cool to be there but my take away was less on how they played but on how Archie was not impressed. Good to have someone there who is not impressed easily. Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners

GOAL. Finally. In the 84' Trevor Swartz on an assist from Gutman and we lead 1-0. It only took 26 shots for us to score. This was Swartz's first goal of the year and he picked a great time to get it.

Michigan State and Northwestern ends in a draw. If we beat either O$U next Wednesday or MSU on the 28th, we win the B1G season title.

Thanks for sharing 8bucks. I think many people are undervaluing Fitzner but I think he is going to have a BIG impact on this team. He's gonna get A LOT of shots off the pick and pop and it's gonna be tough for other bigs to guard him outside. His shooting is gonna force bigs to the outside and going to open up the lane for Romeo and other guards to get the rim with ease. People questioned me when I said I think Rob should start instead of Green bc people weren't impressed with him at the HH Hysteria lol. Rob is an old school under control PG who looks for others first and won't make many boneheaded mistakes like we've seen with Green. This team doesn't need a "playmaker" at point bc we actually have shooters this year and we just need someone to make smart decisions with the ball like Rob. I watched him a lot in HS and he is simply a poor man's Yogi without the crazy quickness. He can score/shoot if he needs to but he knows his role is to get others the ball and make the right play...something Green had trouble with last year. My problem with Green is that he is all about the high risk-reward plays...last year he almost had to bc our outside shot was so ineffective but that shouldn't be the case this year with Fitz and Romeo. Hope Green proves me wrong and has improved a ton for the sake of the team but I'm not getting my hopes up...I strongly believe Rob will be our starting PG and get a majority of the minutes running the show come B1G play. If you’re paying attention to the DOJ college basketball case, you’ll note that the $125K is in line with the numbers being tossed around as having been paid to players via shoe companies. In some cases more, in some cases less than what players allegedly received but in the ballpark. I think this won’t be the easy decision some are already claiming it is, though. Yes, you get paid without any hassle and you get access to “NBA infrastructure, as well as a bevy of off-court development programs geared towards facilitating and accelerating their transition to the pro game.” However, there are some questions… 1. Brand. The reality is that no serious number of people are going to watch the GLeague, with or without elite HS players coming straight into it. That’s just reality. Might it shift over time? Sure, but that will take a LONNNNNNGGGG time. The calculation for many will be that the year of playing at a high profile school for a year will more than offset $125K. For everybody? Nope, but I believe absolutely so for some. So if you want name recognition, I’m not sure the GLeague is the best way to go about it. 2. More importantly, there’s the issue of the draft. Keep in mind, when someone takes this offer, they’re not signing a two way or playing in the NBA at all that year. The entry rule for the Draft remains unchanged. So they’re going to be earning their draft position by playing against men 5-6 years older than they are (in most instances) who are desperately trying to earn a look from the NBA, same as they are…except they’ll be more physically and mentally mature in most cases. Again, in the long run, are you better off going this route and possibly being exposed or just simply shown to be not ready for grown man levels of play, or are you helped more by playing in college for a year? I think that’s going to be a calculation with multiple answers, depending upon the situation. To me, it boils down to this…does the $125K “move the needle,” given the downsides (worse conditions for training/playing in most instances which negatively impacts draft status, etc.)? I’m not sure it does but we’ll begin to find out soon enough.

Well keep in mind it was one practice, the first one where they ran full court and some were battling colds. I was a little discouraged until after when the first words from Archie’s mouth were along the lines of - we looked terrible. That gives me comfort that he will get it righted. I forgot to mention that it was good to see Clifton work down low some. He was more willing to play down low and hit a few hooks. Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners mobile app

Scheduled start 7:00 ET. IU (12-2) (5-0) travels to New Jersey to face Rutgers (4-9-1) (2-4) and on paper it ought to be a fairly easy win for IU, but anything can happen. In its 14 games, Rutgers has only scored 21 goals and given up 34. Preview Live Stats TV: BTN Plus ($)
