PSA- Indiana University Students

BtownBanners
  • This article isn't about Basketball, Football, Soccer or any other Indiana athletic team for that matter. This article is about potentially saving a friend, peer or fellow Hoosier.

News this morning spread quickly that Indiana University had tragically lost one of their own. As many of you are aware, Indiana Freshman Rachael Fiege, 19 Zionsville, was taken off life support this morning after falling down a basement staircase at a party early Friday morning.

Fiege was rushed to the hospital approximately 6 hours after her fall, but it was unfortunately too late. This tragic situation was made worse by the reluctance to seek medical attention. Nobody knows if the outcome could have been different if the authorities were called immediately, but they certaintly couldn't have turned out worse.

This leads to the reason for this article. Indiana has a unique law called the LifeLine Law. The Lifeline Law provides immunity for the crimes of public intoxication, minor possession, minor consumption, and minor transportation of alcohol to persons who reveal themselves to law enforcement while seeking medical assistance for a person suffering from an alcohol-related health emergency.

Translation: If you and your friends are out drinking, and somebody gets seriously hurt, call 911 or get them to the hospital. As long as you follow the following conditions, you WILL NOT be in trouble for your underage drinking.

In order to receive immunity, the person must demonstrate that they are acting in good faith by completing ALL of the following:

- Providing their full name any other relevant information requested by law enforcement officers

- Remaining on the scene until law enforcement and emergency medical assistance arrives

- Cooperating with authorities on the scene

Translation: Be a good friend and do everything you can to help them. The three "conditions" listed above are common sense and a no-brainer for helping your injured friend. This law is there to help you make the RIGHT decision and avoid a potentially tragic situation like this.

Please share this message to all Hoosiers and hopefully prevent future tragedies like this one.

R.I.P Rachael Fiege.

And now this:

@ZachOsterman: Indiana State Police confirm that a body found earlier today in rural Brown County is that of IU student Hannah Wilson.

RIP

This may not go over well...but it's time to level the playing field of 40-something year old men and college age women...

If he was an Uber driver...this is going to get tons of media attention. This is something you never think would happen in a town like Bloomington.

People I know have ridden with him I guess, and said he was weird. I don't know if he was driving last night when this happened, but it would make sense for how quickly they made the arrest. If she was last seen getting into an Uber, all cops needed was to find out who the driver was.

Yeah it makes sense. Judging from the mug shot he doesn't look like a guy I would start a conversation with. Uber is great service but they need to do a better job of hiring drivers. There have been other stories of rapes and burglaries being attempted by drivers.

Yeah I've seen it going both ways, drivers to riders and riders to drivers. I actually thought about driving because it can be good money if you know what you're doing, but man things like this (potentially, still) pretty much pushed me away from it. Hard to trust people right now. It's sad.

Uber, cabs, subways, trains, buses...don't travel alone, don't trust strangers, and protect yourself...pass the word..

I thought about doing it too since my girlfriend works most weekends but she's the one that actually said no to it. She didn't want me "driving drunk girls around town".

very true, I would never let a girl friend of mine ride alone. I've let male friends ride alone in cabs before because I think they'll be fine, but even then, you never know what might happen. It's always a good idea to have someone else with you.

If given the choice of defending one's self and answering to authorities for defending said self versus being dead...I would choose the former every time

From the scant details available, she went missing around 1 am on Friday.

This is Little 5 week.
She is a senior at IU.

While it is completely presumptive on my part, there is a distinct chance she may have joined in this week's celebrations. Aren't you being equally presumptive to assume she was in the proper state of mind to utilize a gun in some heroric manner?

Now, I'm going back to leaving my self rightousness from the public realm to respect the decedent.

RIP Miss Wilson.

Better to be judged by 12 than carried by 6.

To add to this.... If for whatever godawful reason you would have to defend yourself you ALWAYS state you were simply trying to stop them. You NEVER state to the authorities you were trying to kill them.

There's a flip side to that coin though.  It's easy enough to get a CCW permit, but you really need to take the classes as well so you've at least got some training and no amount of training can mimick the emotions that occur in the moment.  The presence of a gun may or may not stop a person, although they probably would think twice, if it doesn't could she have handled her nerves well enough to get off a good shot if it was necessary?

Carrying pepper spray is a non-lethal option for self defense and would buy you enough time to get away.
