The Old Oaken Bucket Game, Last Thoughts and Bye-Bye Doug Mallory!

HoosierReb01
  • Alright. A few last thoughts is misleading. I only have one last thought on this game. IU should win, win handily, and a awful Purdue offense should be held in check.

That's not the thought.

This is. The Indiana defense will give a terrible Purdue offense its best game of the year, cementing that IU defense as the worst defense in the history of the B1G.

Bold statement? Not really. While the IU offense has not shown up the last couple of games, they would have had to score on every possession in several games this year, in order to make sure they had a fighting chance in the game. This is the B1G, that's not going to happen. Thus the problem is defense, no matter how Coach Wilson is trying to sell it.

Now lets be fair. We lost the meat of our defensive line last year, our starting linebackers are mostly freshmen, and we are playing too many freshmen across the board.

Doesn't change a thing. Believe me, I've went through all the excuses this year, as to why our defense doesn't work at all. ALL of them.

IU has had some bad defenses in the past, and the last 20 years alone would provide plenty of examples. But the worst defense in the history of the B1G?

In the past couple of classes we have seen stronger recruiting classes. Why is the product on the field worse?

I came into this season expecting that the IU offense was going to have to put up a lot of points in order to compensate for a weak defense, but I never expected it to be this bad. I could pull all of the stats, NCAA category rankings, etc.

I'm not going to do it. Its easy, IU defensively is near the bottom in just about every defensive category. Out of 123 FBS teams the IU defense ranks 120th in total defense. That's enough.

Regardless of my prediction as to the bucket game, this needs to be Doug Mallory's last game as Indiana Defensive Coordinator. Some may argue he hasn't had enough time, that he hasn't been able to recruit the talent he needs to succeed, but I'm over it. It takes a special kind of incompetence to build a defense into the worst that the B1G has ever had. By December 3rd, Indiana needs to be in the hunt for the next defensive coordinator.
