Rapid Reaction - USI

mdn82
  • Indiana faced U. Southern Indiana Saturday night to kick off the 2013 college basketball season. As always, BtownBanners has the rapid reactions for tonight's game.

Well, this will be new for all of us. I am especially excited for our new home and new features. This is one of those. As the year goes on, I will probably involve stats more and more. This game had so many questions going into it, and the stats wouldn't do it justice for some of the players.

Troy Williams - Kid is going to be a stud if he keeps working the way he does. His athleticism was as impressive as I can remember for a freshman. He was all over the place. At times he was the superior player on the court. He had a block toward the end of the game only Vic could compete with. Solid line of 10 pts / 10 rebounds / 3 blocks.

Noah Vonleh - Made a bold prediction during the game, he would lead the league in rebounds. I don't feel I am overhyping him because he is a Hoosier either. The ball finds him in a Reggie Evans sort of way. It just always seemed to bounce his way during the game and he has as sure of hands as I have seen. He led a break and looked comfortable doing so. He knocked down a 3 from the top of the key. He also went 0-5 from the line. He has some work, but they all do. 9 pts / 12 boards

Yogi "I want to be Jordy" Ferrell - Well, it was the two extremes I think we see from Yogi this year. He was fantastic from 3, hitting 6-10. The flip side is he was very loose with the ball having 4 turnovers. At times he was looking for the spectacular play, instead of the smart play. That said he had 20 points on a solid shooting night. He will be just fine in this new role.

Will Sheehey - He just seemed off tonight. Like many times last year where he would get lost in the shuffle, he seemed to tonight. He will have to be more assertive for us to be successful. Not only that, he will have to be more consistent.

Best of the rest - How about Hanner Perea? That kid was shaky at first, but got it going and just looked comfortable. He hit a baseline jumper outside of anything Zeller hit in 2 years at IU. He went 5-5 from the line on a night where nobody could hit. He was active on defense and on the boards. If he keeps working he adds to the depth we were sorely missing last year. Jeremy and Evan played large roles, and you can see how much Crean expects out of them. To me, they were mostly blah. Jeremy didn't look any different than the player that couldn't find his role last year. Crean had him out on the point a few times. We will see if they can gain some confidence in an early season schedule that will allow for some missteps.

Bottom Line - Two things really. It is basketball, and we are IU. It is most definitely a different year. This is a team that will have to win in transition, and will come nowhere near the efficiency of last year or probably even the year before. I feel better than I did heading into it. I was impressed by how assertive Hanner and Luke were (even if he didn't have the greatest game). That just means we will have depth we haven't had in Crean's tenure. I can easily see a team where we are going 10 deep regularly. Last year we struggled to go beyond 7. The flip side to that is we will need it. We aren't the well oiled offensive machine of last year. We will rely on defense and athleticism to win games. Going forward I will probably rely a lot more on stats. This game was more about seeing what positions Crean put his players in. I am excited for the upside of this team. There will also be nights where I will probably drink myself to sleep. That said, if there is anything you guys and gals want me to add, let me know.

Did we ever trail?

No we did not.  They were close throughout until about 10 min to go.  I believe it was like 44-42 before we started to pull away.  The big takeaways from the game aren't as bad as I would have thought.  All correctable.  Free Throws and Turnovers were the big issues.  We aren't going to be as good of a shooting team as last year.  Defensively we were better than what their final score showed.  They were hitting a lot of jumpers.  If we make teams jump shooting teams against our length and athleticism, I like our odds this year.  We are too good of a rebounding and transition team to lose to jump shooting teams on a regular basis.  Noah Vonleh is the best rebounder we have had on this team in years.

They are correctable, and they need to be.  I'm not sure turnovers will be though.  I've looked at the numbers and going all the way back to his first year at Marquette his teams have never averaged fewer than 13 per game.  Now some of that is pace, but Michigan pushed the pace too and they didn't turn it over like that.

We did trail, SIU scored the first basket of the game.

I agree with that.  I don't think we will be lower in turnovers than we were last year, and we were pretty good offensively.  I think part of this year's issue will be youth.  I think part of it is Yogi looking for the spectacular pass instead of the smart pass.  He had two drives in a row today where he went to the no look pass.  When you have freshman, that usually doesn't end well.  Part of that is not only pace, but the type of offense he runs at this pace.  There is a lot of dribbling in this offense at a fast pace.  That will lead to a lot of errors.  You don't see a lot of passes into shots unless its drive and kick.  It isn't moving the ball around to find someone curling off of a screen.  Its dribble, watch the defense collapse, and then kick if you see a pass into a shot.  We will see a lot errors in this offense.  I think you can minimize when you see those errors, but we won't ever be a low turnover team.  I will agree with that.  Free throws just looked bad.  I think some of the rebounds we had were just being bigger, but we will be a good rebounding team.  We should be the most athletic team on the court most nights as well.  Troy Williams is more athletic than Vic was as a Freshman in 2010 and looks like a ball player, which Vic did not at the time.  He had flashes, but Troy makes basketball plays.  I am actually more excited about this team than I was on things that really don't show up in the box score.

We trailed to a team we didn't play?  Man, this season is going to be rough.

Thanks CC.  I read back through and could see how some would think I was being down on Jeremy from what I wrote.  I do feel bad about that.  He did score 13.  I just felt at times he was out of control and forced things.  He didn't seem comfortable in the offense.  He seemed to go into the lane like VJ3 used to without a purpose hoping to get bailed out.  Again, he did score 13, but against better talent, I don't think what he did will get it done if that makes sense.  Defensively, he wasn't near as active as many of the Hoosiers out there.  I do like how we moved him out to the point at times trying to create mismatches.  I think he moves better in the offense when he is working out on the perimeter.  Definitely some good and not so good things to take away from everyone on the court.  If we get the bench production or even half of it we got today from JH, Hanner, and Luke we will be more than fine.  Remember, we didn't even get Devin Davis or Stan.  I think we would all agree atleast 1 of those players will be expected to contribute.  If that is the case we are atleast 9/10 deep.  Better than I thought!

Troy Williams and Noah Vonleh will be sensational this year. Also, Vonleh should lead the league in rebounding. He grabs anything in sight.

I was incredibly high on the freshmen, especially those two, coming into the season. They'll be special.

Perea may win me over this year, and I don't think I'll see too much better from Sheehey. Don't know why I feel that way, just do.

Yogi needs to protect the ball more. Last year I thought he played crazy at times. I think he'll get that under control.

I haven't seen any highlights, but seeing what other people say about the team makes me feel good going forward. Few, if any, people are higher on this team than me, and I can't wait to see what they do.
