Analysis: Another alcohol related incident with IU basketball? Really?

IndyHutch
  • Here is my take on Monday's report that two IU basketball players were cited early Friday for underage possession of alcohol.

At some point it gets ridiculous.

But I really thought “at some point” was the last time all of this transpired.

And yet here we are again with the latest news that Emmitt Holt and Thomas Bryant were cited early Friday for possession of alcohol.

I get that kids will be kids. I have two sons of my own. One has been out of college for two years and one is a senior in college this year.

I know that a lot of alcohol is consumed by people under the age of 21 on college campuses and everywhere else for that matter.

I get all of that. What I don’t get is how Indiana basketball players continue to put themselves into harm’s way. At some point, given all that has transpired in just the last 18 months with the Indiana basketball program, these guys HAVE TO BE SMARTER than this.

The IU athletic department put out a release around 5:30 p.m. ET Monday saying that they were aware that Holt and Bryant had been cited. They said they were in the process of gathering all the information.

Here is a definite with this situation: People are going to be quick to point the blame at Tom Crean and the IU staff. They’re going to blame the culture. They’re going to say that not enough is being done to make these guys realize how bad this looks for the program.

But at some point the buck has to stop with the individuals themselves. At some point, the accountability has to end there.

You would have thought that the announcement on May 15 that both Hanner Mosquera-Perea and Devin Davis had been dismissed from the program for “not living up to their responsibilities to the program” would have been all the wakeup call that these guys needed.

The dismissal came shortly after Davis was cited for possession of marijuana when police came to his dorm room. Mosquera-Perea was not cited but was in the room at the time.

But obviously dismissal from the team wasn’t enough of a deterrent. And that’s the most frustrating thing here. At some point, you have to ask the question ‘What is enough of a punishment?’

Probably the most disappoint thing here is to see that Holt is once again involved in an alcohol-related incident, no matter how small or minor some may think this may be.

It was less than a year ago that Holt was behind the wheel when Davis was struck by Holt’s vehicle on the morning of Nov. 1. Davis suffered a serious head injury that cost him the 2014-15 season. Holt was cited in that incident for illegal consumption of alcohol, a misdemeanor, and for operating under the influence of alcohol under the age of 21. Holt’s blood alcohol number was under the legal limit but since he was under 21 what is legal was a moot point.

Holt was suspended for four games – the two exhibition games and the first two regular season games.

And so that’s what makes today’s report even that much more troubling is that it happened again, so soon, to Holt.

I can’t repeat enough that I understand possession and consumption of alcohol by minors is something that happens daily on college campuses.

At the same time, these are not your average college students. These are students who are generally already under the microscope any way but in the case of Indiana basketball players it’s as if a high-beamed spotlight follows them around everywhere they go. They have to know that people are watching their every move and yet somehow, someway these things continue to happen.

Are they being set up somehow by other students? It’s a conspiracy theory but probably one that needs to be considered. Or are they just not careful and allowing themselves to be put in the wrong situation?

At some point this has to stop.

At some point it gets ridiculous.

The reality is “at some point” has long since come and gone.

What am I missing here?

Aren't we all sick of this discussion?  This has become a once a quarter issue in Btown.  How many promises of change have we heard?  Either tell IU fans this is the program we run now or change the program.  I'd like to feel excited about the upcoming season without this drama.  Eventually the Knight drama go too much to take.  How much TC drama will we need to take?

While I agree there is too much drama, I also don't think you can bury your head in the sand and pretend it doesn't exist either. Unfortunately it is what it is.

So what's your take Hutch? Rule out the conspiracy and then...what do you think?

I just gave you my take. The players need to be accountable and smarter about this. You would think the penalties were harsh enough when two players were dismissed from the program but stuff is still happening so apparently not.

Hanner got two strikes and he was out. Same should go for Holt.  They have to let him go given what they did to Hanner.  What a shame.

Hutch-I found it interesting you cite kids need to take responsibility, which I agree, but please do not tell me you absolve Crean and his staff. You recruit good quality players, you minimize this issue. I guess a free education carries little to no weight so you are willing to pitch it out the window, while there are students who love to have just a few more scholarship dollars to even have the IU experience. Glass has to sign all the paperwork as well. So what are his expectations for student athletes? Sorry this very disappointing. Embarrassed to be an IU graduate once again.

I guess I thought you were going to offer your opinion on what should happen. Obviously the word accountable can mean anything anyone wants it to mean - from nothing to everything.

Not absolving Crean, just simply saying that the players need to be accountable. Especially since the hammer was put down pretty hard on May 15 when IU dismissed two players from the program for their actions.

I was offering my take on the situation at hand not so much on what I think should be done in terms of what should happen next.

But I do think that people are going to be more than a little interested at what the ultimate punishment turns out to be in this case.

I don't think that's necessarily accurate. You're assuming Hanner got two strikes but it could have been more. The Feb. 14, 2014 OWI was publicized so we knew about that but they don't announce every violation of their policy publicly unless there's a need as in an arrest or a public citation.

At the end of the day, Crean can only do so much. The players are behaving extremely immaturely and making horrible decision after horrible decision.

Coach Crean also needs to win... And win now. Tough situation to be in honestly.

I know if I was making $3 million a season or whatever he makes and I needed to win what I would do... Don't go around saying what Crean should do unless you would do the exact same thing with all the $$$ on the line.

I have a non-legally adopted son that was one of the top football recruits in the nation last year and he is enjoying his freshman year in college now.  He was given the team rules upon arrival to the campus on June 23rd and informed the negative effects that alcohol will have on the development of his muscles.  He is around partying all the time and has chosen not to drink.  We speak all the time with him about being under the microscope and that his every move is being watched by someone.  His coaches have given him the team rules and we as parents talk about the rules nearly daily with him....it is up to him to live by them and to do what is right.  Crean cannot hold their hand 24 hours a day....the players must do what is right.

That's the whole thing about this that is probably the most frustrating. Looking at it as a parent you know that when you let your kids go off to college that you hope the way you raised them coupled with whatever rules they'll be expected to live by will get them by. But you're also smart enough to know that there are plenty of powerful influences out there, too, that will test even the strongest kid. And really that's what they are is kids. They may be 17 or 18 but they are still in that nurturing stage. Yes, they're anxiously waiting the time to spread their wings and fly but some are more ready for that than others. What you said about Crean not being able to hold their hands 24 hours a day is the absolute truth. He talked to them at that evening practice on Halloween last year about being responsible and representing and then the Holt/Davis incident occurred. You have to know that since the new freshmen arrived on campus this summer that the same message was being pounded into their heads. But ultimately it comes down to the kid having to have the accountability and the ability to make the right decisions. In this particular case, the incorrect decision was made once again.

The way I see it, these kids don't appreciate what they've been given.  Full ride to one of the best schools in America, membership on one of the best known basketball teams/programs in America, virtual job guarantees upon graduation due to their association with IU and the basketball program.  Thousands of other kids would kill for that opportunity, and these idiots couldn't care enough about their opportunities.  I have no sympathy for them. At all.

Make good decisions and this type of activity is not an issue. I am sure other players are enjoying the rich tradition of IU, but being smarter about it. Why was Bryant with Holt? Why would Holt even put himself in this type of situation?

Your last question is the million dollar question. You just can't put yourself (and the program for that matter) in that position. You just can't. And when you do that the perception is simply that you don't care.

It does come down to character and deciding what you want to take from the time on campus.  We preach to our kids that with choices come consequences....good or bad there is a consequence and that you are in control of what that consequence is going to be.  The Crean hatters are going to use this as another reason to get rid of Crean....to me, it causes me to sit back and think about the impact I am having on my kids life and this was a prime example for me to share with them last night.
